Who Is in The Pacific North West ? WA, BC

I was wondering who lived in the Pacific North West : BC, WA

It would be nice to know who all is in our area that is interested in DIY.

As I was thinking of perhaps going to some DIY speakers , but wanted to hear some first , to see how much of an improvement there would be over my current speakers . And get some first hand tips, knowledge about building , and tool, paint etc that would be required.

Denon AVR X4400H , PSB Image 6T towers, 9C Centre , 2B Surrounds
Panasonic PT-AU3000U Projector , 100" screen , Oppo UPD-203
Funk Audio 18.1 Subwoofer

You really won't know this unless you're able to listen to the speakers in your room.

I'm in the Portland area too. Been researching for months, but haven't started a project yet. Thinking about building martys, if anyone is interested in splitting an order.

Sure. My statement wasn't meant to discourage him from listening to any diy speaker.

I'm also in Seattle. So far I've built a set of Titan 615LX LCR kits and a couple of BOSS platforms. Still thinking of building some subs, but nothing planned out yet.

Tuxedocivic who designed the 1099 speakers is on Vancouver Island. No idea if he takes visitors though.

I'm in a Vancouver BC suburb (Burnaby) and will be building some NF subs and a modified BOSS...eventually. I own a millwork shop that I can open up on evenings and weekends for any locals (or anyone willing to drive) that need tools/equipment for their build. I even have a paint shop if you want to make it pretty 😉

Hi, The 615LX were one of the speakers I wanted to know about .

What is your thoughts on them ?
How do they compare to the other tower speakers you have had ?
What size is the room that they are in ?
How far from them is your listening distance ?

What center channel if any did you use ?
What is your setup Stereo , 5.1 , Atmos 5.x.4 or ?

Sorry for all the questions …..lol

What are you running for subs? Open to a demo swap? I'm running 4 vbss's in the garage and JBL cheap 12's as an IB in the house.

That is very generous of you , as I don't have many tools and would love to make the finish pretty for WAF.

What is your speaker setup ?

I currently have 5.1 but am wanting to go to 5.1.4 Atmos next year , if I can figure out a good way to do it.

Also what is a BOSS setup ?

(FYI, For my brothers wedding I did have to buy a new suit and it was a BOSS)

Lol. I have a 5.2.4 and the BOSS is an inexpensive way to get tactile response (TR) with little or no SPL. There is a huge thread about it. I already get enough pressure from the 2 subs I have.

I am over in Walla Walla, WA. I have DIY sealed and Tapped Horn subs (plus tons of spare drivers and amps.)

I also have two different BOSS systems.

I'm in the Portland OR area. My room build is (still) just in its early phases of construction (since I'm the contractor :P).

I plan to eventually build mains as TPL150H + TD10M + TD18H (or similar drivers), surrounds using the Faital Pro 8HX200 coaxial driver, and band-passed subs using 4x 18TBW100 for 40Hz-~150Hz and 2x TBD for DC-40Hz. Using QSC DSP for all channels and CXDQ amps for mains.

I'm about a ~4 hour drive from Vancouver.

But if you listen to my system it will permanently ruin you forever. (and not in a good way, or maybe in a good way )

About a ~$100k DIY system.

29 DIY subwoofers and 100kW of FP clones, $7000 72 channel DIY active XO/DSP rig, in a purpose built structure.
Nearly flat from 2hz to 30khz.

My projector and seating is garbage though and I have no air conditioning (working on it...)

1 SAB-24 (4kW)
2 MalX-21's (9kW)
4 LMS-18's (16kW)
16 PA-460's (8kW)
6 UM-15's (12kW)
7 SEOS-12's (8kW) with 7 15" mids (8kW) as beds.

Marantz 7705 for Atmos DAC
72 channel Sabre Reference music/movie DAC

Working on assembling my new $2000 DIY Atmos heights this spring. (Beyma carbon fiber mid, Fostex supers, Dayton fiber woofers)

Just imagine, you'd never enjoy anything again(...Excellent Smithers!)

Wow and I was all happy as hell , with my one (new to me) 18" Funk Audio subwoofer ...LOL

This summer I took a road trip for my first time to Spokane , Coeur d'Alene ID, Silverwood Theme & Water Parks , and into Montana as far East as Glacier National Park.
On the way back instead of I-90 we took the scenic route through Winthrop.

What town are you in ?

Near the Grand Coulee Dam , as you must be taking a huge chunk of their power ?

I "should" have the 25th to the 4th off.
and then I won't be back home until spring...

I'm going to be upgrading my DSP rig (on the 25th?), which will take at least a solid half day, so my system will be inoperable until that upgrade is complete.
I have to upgrade the BIOS, so hopeful it doesn't brick it, or I'll be system-SOL and out a new motherboard.

It is an all-active system, so every driver from supers to subs each one has a dedicated Saber channel and FP channel, and customized DSP settings per driver (it is a LOT of work!!!)

The good news is that: all of that is already saved in files, but if I want to try to unify the settings into a single app, then I'm not exactly sure if the saved presets are cross-project or project-dependent (never done that before). So it could be either: moderately easy or VERY time consuming to transfer.
[Worst-case: I just get lazy and keep it multi-app like I have it now, which should "hopefully" be zero effort.]

That's the only "thing" I planned on doing. (That and a LOT of drinking and tunes once finished, and/or during and/or before. LOL! )

I live in South Seattle, unfortunately most of the DIY speakers I have built are no longer available. I plan on building a quality 2-channel set in a year or so.

My system idles at about 3kW RMS on mute. (No joke.)
My HT room has about a dedicated ~200amperes, enough to run a whole house.

The FP's are 90's efficient, and I have never taken it beyond 50% power; and most music/movies are tame/lame and burst-like.

Also you have to consider that the PA-460's are like 98db/w/m, and there are 16 of those, which is an insane amount of accumulative-efficiency when summed together.
The SEOS tweeters are like 108db/w/m and there are 7 of those... (obviously only 2 in music-mode, but still...)

My LCR's are 4-way actives (2hz to 30khz each on their own, in terms of flatness), with about 10kW per LCR on-tap. Obviously only the woofers consume any real power, the mids and tweeters are so efficient they'd never be able to handle anywhere close to full-power (but it's there if it needs it.)

I don't think I've ever seen the mid consume more than 500W and 100w for the tweeter each on their own; and that was at like 20db above THX level.

My normal playback level is 15db above THX, which is well beyond what most people care to be exposed to.
More-than capable of damaging ears, especially if you play metal/rock music.

I can't even hear my 24, even with 4kW going into it... that's how loud the overall system is (when you want it to be!)

If my amplifiers ever clipped, all my drivers would be fried for-sure, it's definitely not amp-limited for the most part.

As for painting and wood-working stuff, you'll have to learn that from someone else, I suck at that stuff.

You wouldn't think it, but my system is geared for SQ first, SPL secondly.
Although there is ALWAYS room for improvements!

Thanks. Funny how tastes and finish choices change. At the time I was trying to match our family room cabinets. I plan to sand down all my clear oak finishes and apply an ebony stain similar to the subwoofers I use in my home theater, knock some of the sharp edges off the corners and possibly convince my wife to let me put the Visions back in the family room. They are currently in a bonus room that doesn't get much use other than as an exercise room. Not that I don't enjoy great tunes while working out.

Five years ago I went to a home theater meet and greet in Surrey (Vancouver) with some of the areas big DIY'ers.
Ryan (Tuxedocivic), Chalugadp (founder of the Martysub DIY thread) and the guys from Funk Audio were in attendance as well as other enthusiasts such as myself. We listened to several DIY speakers including the 1099's in comparison to a pair of JTR's as reference. My personal opinion, which I think was shared by many who were there, was that the difference between well designed speakers operating within their limits is slight. Judgement would likely sway with a small tweak of the treble control or nudge of the subwoofer level. The importance of room and equipment setup and tuning, rather than the gear itself, was hit home once again.
More valuable than evaluating equipment was meeting the guys and talking about the hobby. Unfortunately both the host (Joe Brown) and Chalugdp (what the heck was his real name again) have permanently bowed off AVSForums.

Looks like your thread has piqued a lot of interest and I highly recommend following through on one of the offers. Must be a little scary opening one's home containing thousands of dollars of gear to complete strangers, but kudos to those who do.

This is the problem all HiFi connoisseurs face; once you go forward you CAN'T go back...
Your setup should be a AVS DIY destination site. Like of those historical sites you have to visit or something.

I really like the idea of a PNW GTG. Getting to meet you knowledgeable folks and hear some of the DIY systems is what keeps this hobby going (IMO).

I also agree about @BassThatHz 's theater being a mecca destination though I am not sure I would enjoy singing an NDA, being blindfolded and transported by unmarked van
