Being that the dustcap is such a hard dome, I would not risk damaging the cone during removal and it would be a PITA..... I think that covering it would be a better solution. It will alter the T/S slightly due to more mass but not enough to actually hear. IMO, a ring around the dustcap looks much better than a big dent...

To repair all my dented dust cap I used a very small drill and I drill in the center A SMALL HOLE that I can stick a small piece of metal through and then push out from the inside.
It’s time consuming and tedious but if done well you won’t be able to tell it was even dented.
Then to fix the hole you can use a small amount of hot glue to fill the hole or a small piece of clear tape that is carefully cut in a small circle. Or just slap a sticker over the hole....lol

Nice upgrade.
Any chance you can take a close-mic measurement for me?

Sure. I'm not home now, but I can have that measurement for by tomorrow. How close are we talking? Would you like the measurement of the one with the pillows or without?

Awesome, thanks.

Mic 3” from port board, like so:

Eq and filters off.

Without pillows is best for my current project, working on rear chamber resonance modeling.

A measurement with pillow would be cool too, we haven’t seen the difference in a 40” cab yet. Its significant in the 48” and 60” cabs.

I’ll do a model overlay as well, see how close this one is.

I’ll pm you my email address.

How does the no pillows and pillows graphs look with 80, 100, and 120hz lowpass filters?

@a77cj7

He has been doing the research on this topic. Based on graphs I have seen the response is the expected outcome. It does not look like the Mini really suffers from near band standing waves. That must occur somewhere over the 40" mark.

Thanks for taking the close-mics.

Here’s the two overlaid with the model:

It looks like much like the other rear chamber damping tests.

Here’s the quad, a 48” cab:

Alpha, a 60” cab:

As you can see, the taller the cabinet, the lower the rear chamber resonance moves.

For a 40” cab like your mini 21, the resonance is far enough out of the standard pass-band with an 80hz lpf that its not really an issue. It appears to start making a difference around 135hz.
However, for the minimal cost and effort required to add a pillow, I’d still suggest adding one while building.

Chris

I believe it has been mentioned the ds115 models a little better than the sw115. In the Dev that is. In this case, probably be best to save yourself some coin and get the ds115.

The sw115 was on clearance for $395 over the weekend. Unfortunately it looks like they sold out already though, as the sw115 is no longer available.

What I would have purchased that without hesitation.

BTW, PE looks to have more Open box B&C 21DS115-4. I purchased one last week Currently contemplating purchasing another or a NSW 21. Either will be going into a ported enclosure

I know, I'm mad at myself for not buying a pair as soon as I saw them at that price. I woke up this morning excited to buy a set, only to discover they are gone now.

Here’s the two overlaid with the model:
Looks good.
A bit rough above 120hz but that is to be expected from a high-order box.

One could easily make that flat from 19-120hz with some EQ, or just keep the excessive mid-bass hump for extra chest-kick db's.

From the MLP measurements, looks like the room is already knocking the midbass below flat. Its a good case for the dev’s response curve being a useful in-room.

I really haven't given any thought as to design yet. I had these sitting in my cart for a while and PE sent me a "one day only" 10% discount...No brainer I wanted a NSW6021-6, but 2 LaVoce SAN214.50 will best 1 NSW6021-6. At least that is my thinking. I believe I'm going with at least one ported cab, for simplicity's sake Besides, I don't think my drywall or PJ can take 2 more Devs
