Mini Devastator 21" Version

Yes, another one I'm not even sure where/how/who started this Devastator craze Anyway, this will be the first of 2 devastator builds. I'll be using a B&C 21DS115 21 (I nabbed from @Nexgen76 ) for the builds. I really don't know what to expect in terms of "in my room" performance, but below is the sim that Red Five came up with. I won't be closing up the hatch until I actually have the driver in hand. Nexgen76 will be bringing it over along with his 3 GSG devastator flatpacks Enough rambling...off to the lab

Done with the cutlist

My plan was to begin assembly today, but I wasted a ton of time attempting to build a crosscut sled...I'll try again some other time. Can't wait until tomorrow Me and the wife are about to have movie time Fried chicken and tater tots for dinner. Oh, almost forgot the hot sauce

I just picked up 2 eminence 21’s from Ricci and was going to go Devastator route but may not now do too the size and the place I could fit them being very tight. Curious too see your results with the mini version.

I had my eye on those eminence 21's Ricci posted; next thing I know they all were sold. Happy for ya. What size can you fit?

I’ve got roughly 29”5 x 38” footprint. I’m going to be trying to calibrate them with 4 Danley DTS-10’s. Hoping I can make this work.

Forgot to mention, I’m very unhandy so looking at flat packs from GSG or diysoundgroup. Been chatting with EricH about a 21” of the Kuda flat packs coming. I may go with that considering he’s only an hour from me and I can pick them up.

Well, I didn't get nearly as far along as I had hoped I ran into a few issues. I'm not sure whose build I referred to in regards to cutting the notch in the driver rail, but as you can see from the photo I cut too close to the end of the rail. I placed a block on the short end of the rail to provide more support. Also, because I didn't have enough area on the top end of the driver rail, I could use a pocket screw. I had to use clamps to hold the rail in place until the glue dries. In regards to fastening the side and top panel, I discovered the panel moved after screwing in the pocket screws. Obviously I had to abandon the pocket screws and use clamps after I realigned everything.

I will resume assembly early tomorrow morning

Man am I exhausted. I've been up every since 1:45am. Storm came through and woke me up and I couldn't go back to sleep. The thought of tornadoes absolutely freak me out Anyhoot, I decided to spend some time in the lab since I was awake. All that's left is the backside of the box Oh, I got very concerned when it came to installing the baffle assembly. I went through every build in the dev index to get an idea as to how you guys pulled this off. In the end it took a bit of creativeness, but I got it done

Went overboard on the glue

Not sure you guys can see in the photo, but it looks like I was about 1/16" short on the last side panel. I'm not perfect, but such is life I'll look to finish up later...I have to get some sleep.

More progress. Actually, I'm almost done...well at least until I get the driver. I'll hold off on the access hatch until then.

Obviously, I didn't learn my lesson last time.

Gonna have leave here for the day. About to watch my Bayou Bengal play for the National Championship

I can see the finish line my bracing dimensions turned out to be a tab off causing the back panel to not sit flush I'll make sure I dry fit that area on the next one I used a ton of glue, clamps and screws to make sure I had an airtight seal @Red Five I'm a bit confused as to the placement of the hatch bracing. Care to shed a little light on that? Do you see any issues with the bracing around the hatch area as is?

If the sub fits through the back you should be good! Some hatch bracing might require tweaks.

I think you are fine even if you have to take a jigsaw and cut out some small curves in those 2x4's.

Yeah, that's doable. Hopefully no more boneheaded mistakes are discovered.

@Red Five I've been thinking of a way to utilize The two PA460s I'll have freed up. I want to build mini devs for them, but I don't want to waste the cabs or the space in case I decide to fill the rest of the sub area with mini devs 21. What if I build regular mini devs for the PA460 and when I get the other B&C 21s, I somehow alter the cutout to fit a 21 and use the B&C in the mini dev. Will there be any major issues with using a 21 in a devastator meant for the 18? Or should I just build a mini dev 21 and make the baffle cutout for the PA460? Any issues there? The latter would ensure a cab meant for a 21 when I change over.

Any of the 21" variants will work with the PA460. 18" to 21" can be a problem on the HCR designs. What I would do is cut the 10" radius hole for a 21" and then make an adapter for an 18" to sit over that hole. Easy upgrade later.

You can always turn it down, but you can only turn it up so much (before you run out of power, excursion or structural integrity).

Build mini 21’s and use an adapter ring to mount the PA460. The 21’s are way too much for the original mini, hence why the mini 21 was designed.

EDIT: @Red Five beat me too it.

Yup. If you have a 21 for mockup, you could install the threaded inserts for the 21, and drill the adapter ring at that pattern. Super easy upgrade in the future.

You should top mount the pa460 on the adapter ring to avoid spacing it back.

So you're saying cut the baffle for a 21 and then make a 21 to 18 reducer ring? The threaded inserts would make it very easy to change between the two
