Subwoofer drivers that like smaller ported boxes?

I know the Ultimax gets all the love here, but it doesn't seem to appreciate especially small boxes for ported alignments. Can someone suggest drivers that do well for extension in a smaller enclosure? I'm thinking 15" driver, aiming for an F3 at 16 Hz in the ballpark of Correction: 6 cubes.

How much money are you looking to spend? Most any driver can play ULF, at what spl level is the question. So what spl are you looking to achieve?

The Peerless STW-350F-188PR01-04 will do it but good luck getting a port large and long enough into a cabinet that small. Would be a better candidate for some passive radiators.

Otherwise if you could give up a few Hz the Dayton RSS390HO would work well in a cabinet that small.

I can throw a bit of money at the problem - let's say ballpark $500 on the driver but I am open to options. I'd like to achieve output comparable to the SVS PB-3000, anything more is gravy. I will have DSP on the front end too. I checked my numbers and turns out I lowballed the box size a little in the original post so I've revised it up to 6 ft³.

I'd go with the HST-15 if it were me.
18Hurts and STL D like this.

Beefy miracle of xmax... hardly. I'd suggest reading the thread on it.

I was looking at that, but the RM isn't out of the question either. They just don't seem to be popular woofers and I can't find much information about them/

I think you're missing an aspect here. What amp do you intend to use?

The HST-15 likely (I haven't looked at every one) has the most Xmax and can handle the most power of any of the 15" drivers you have been looking at.

You want low extension in (and I quote) "smaller"? An HST-15 in a sealed box will do what you are after, given enough power. Run the sims in WinISD.

Going by the Klippel defined compliance limits, 5.95 mm one way excursion is all she's got cap'n. ( at least for the sample tested )

https://www.klippel.de/fileadmin/kli...inearities.pdf

Of course it can 'move' more than that, but the linearity will suffer, in turn generating distortion components that are not in the driving signal.

Per Klippel: Driven at Fs with a sinusoidal tone to a displacement equal to 0.75 of the at rest Cms will result in 10% distortion.

Source: page 7 of 10 https://www.klippel.de/fileadmin/kli...inearities.pdf

I have noticed that the spiders are assembled in the same direction on the coil former, they should be mirrored. This was shown in a cutaway photograph and from third party accounts of actual units in the wild.

They're definitely a smaller company and they mainly focus on the car audio side of things. You may have heard of them a few years back when they sold HT-18's for $200 that a lot of people used in Marty subs. The RM line is hand made to order in the U.S., like the HSTs, whereas the new SQL line has been produced in China.

Your issue is mainly going to be with your box and not really finding a driver that works in smaller boxes as there are quite a few of those (especially the SI's). The box, paired up with a driver that aligns better in smaller boxes will need to be tuned closer to 20hz, a box with total 6cu/f is really asking a lot for very little. Assuming double baffle and .75" material, this leaves you with 4.7 cu/f internal to work with and that includes the bracing, driver AND port.

A port small enough to fit in that enclosure (and not hit a too low 1st port resonance) would max out very early. I wouldn't suggest trying dump a lot of power into that alignment.

OP hasn't stated SPL goals, but you could go with 2 CSS SDX12 (12" sub) in 3 cubes each. Models pretty well at 20hz tuning, ports are pretty long though.

https://www.css-audio.com/online-sto...fer-p110031759

They have passive radiators that will work well with this as well to @mtg90 's point.
