Car Audio without Line Level Conversion? (I2S?)

Hi everyone,

I was wondering, based on your experience - have you been able to utilize a given vehicle's original head unit / source and connect it to an external amp? I doubt most cars have line-level outputs, but I would assume that I2S is in there somewhere.

Appreciate the stories.

I have used various low cost high-level to line-out conversion adapters for adding subwoofer amplifiers to factory systems (taping the wiring near an existing speaker that isn't behind a crossover) with surprisingly good results although those frequencies are somewhat forgiving in regards to quality. There are some high-end converters with on-board DSP options that a lot of people seem to have good results utilizing as well.
