The tablet acts as the remote for the server.  There is no separate remote so they are sold as a package.

I've seen best buy advertising the sony server, but with no tablet included, so it the tablet the only way to control it? I would be using it with a projector.

In my case, a Sony rep delivered the X1 when they upgraded my 4K TV recently. They gave me the X1 and an Xperia SGPT1211 tablet.

The 4K app on the tablet directly controls the device by wifi over the network. The app kind of looks like iTunes. You choose your movie and it downloads to the X1, and you watch it.

The app itself is available on the Google Play store - it is titled "4K Ultra HD Remote by Sony". I assume it will work on any Android tablet. So possibly you only need the X1 and your own Android tablet...? I could find no iOS version of the app.

With a projector, such as the VPL-VW600ES, you need the tablet. There is no other option. A few of the Sony flat panel TVs can control the puck by relaying commands from a remote control.

i dunno if it will work with the media player or not but I ha e the new gear 4 ethernet port PowerLine adaptor and it's done fine with my xbox 360,my xbox one, my Amazon fire TV media player and it worked with the apple TV that's now in another room with the roku player that worked as well on my Panasonic 3d Blu Ray player. So I highly recommend the new gear model power adapters

If your house is wired with coax for cable - not satellite - MOCA adapters are way better than power line.

I've had this piece of **** since December and they've added one movie; American Hustle, a couple trailers and other nonsense clips. The choice of 10 movies are limited and ambiguous. I certainly don't have ten full feature films. What an absolute con!

It sure don't seem like Sony is properly promoting there Sony 4k movie content, I was on the fence about purchasing the media player, think I'll hold off now...

They don't and to be honest I'm only getting it because best buy was giving it away for free when I bought my x900a. I won't know of if it even works until the 18th when the TV and the media player here. Tbh I was gonna wait till the second Gen media player came out as this seems to be a crapshoot on who gets it to work or not.

Yeah I wouldn't risk $699 on the first Gen player. Especially since we could have a new one this summer or fall and $700 is quite a steep gamble when it's to be replaced soon. I'm hoping my free bie unit works but I'm not betting on it.

Just got the FMP-X1. It seems that you cannot turn off the TV or even change inputs while the 4k movies are downloading. If you do this, it will stop the downloads / turn off the player. Is there a way around this?

I haven't figured out how yet but I only had it 2 days before having to go out of state. IMHO the media player is sluggish and underwhelming. And I find it idiotic that you can't pause a single download or stop it once started you have to either pause all downloads or wait untill it's fully downloaded to delete it. And it's slow as heck. I can download a 35 gig xbox one game in an hour with my download speed but a single uhd movie takes 8 hours over my ethernet? Nuts!

Unfortunately that app is made for the Sony Experia Tablet only. Hopefully, but don't hold your breath, it will eventually be available for all android and iOS tablets. frown.gif

I have my player connected to a netgear powerline extender since my internet is down the hall in another room. It would connect to the internet but not download the software update that appeared on my 65x900 screen. I had a very slow internet speed so I upgraded to another provider and have a constant 37 to 43 Mbps now. even with this update the update failed , so I ran an ethernet cable from my router to the unit and presto the update worked.  I then reconnected the player to the powerline extender and had no problem watching several shorts and ordering my "free" download of Elysium. The problem is that I have had a solid green light on for 72 hours now and I can feel that the media player is doing something. If I go to the sen on the tv and select 4K all I get is a dark screen. How can I tell what is going on? Do you have to leave the tv on the entire time of the download? Should I see any other lights on the media player during a download?  Help!

I had the problem where the "still loading " prompt stayed in that mode forever. I called Sony today(called level 2 number 877-619-7669 support not the first level techs that don't know what they are doing and have wasted hours of my time on other issues. Level 2 took only 10 minutes to help me fix my problem) Used the fix that was recommended of clearing the cache, deleting the data and that seemed to do the trick for me as well.

Just got my X1 player to pair with my 65X850A. Couldn't pass up the clearance price at Fry's. Connected to HDMI 4 but gives me error message that 4k player is not recognized. Its not connected to network. Do I need to have a network connection to even watch the preloaded demo material on the X1? If so I will have to wait till tomorrow as I need an ethernet powerline adapter.

Used a long ethernet cable temporarily to set up the X1. Everything went smoothly. Will switch over to powerline ethernet adapter today. Downloaded Elysium, took about 5-6 hrs for the whole movie to download. Now hopefully Sony will release a firmware upgrade to update the X1 to get HEVC but for the price I got X1 at its not a big loss. For anybody living in Phoenix or Tempe go grab the last of X1's at an outrageous clearance price from Frys. Frys is out of these units everywhere else.

Can the current blurays be downloaded & stored in the X1's hard drive? Or alternatively can the blurays be stored on an external hard drive & be able to be played back through X1? Have to somehow make use of all that storage in X1. 4k movie download is too expensive right now.

Looking at the specs for X10. In some regards it seems like a downgrade with only 1TB hard drive & no USB 3.0 ports. Only upgrades which I can see over X1 is HEVC decoder & wireless which is not compelling enough for me to upgrade my X1 that I got at a steal at clearance price at Frys. I would rather put that money into a future 3rd party 4k media player which I am guessing will be available by end of the year hopefully.

There will be no update to the X1 for HEVC decoding. Sony's HEVC solution is the X10 .

Sony XBR-75X940C, two XBR-65X930C, Sony XBR-65X900B, two Sony FMP-X10 4K Media Players, four Sony SWF-BR100 Wireless Subwoofers.

I can live without HEVC for now. I am guessing by late this year or early next year there will be more media players & BD players with HEVC.
