It's crazy that I paid $2500 for this 65HU8550 when two years later $1600 gets a 65KS8500 that has full support and other incremental updates. My other limitation is that I have an hdmi 1.4 receiver, so UHD bluray I will only be getting plain 5.1 audio from the xb1s optical port, which would be the same thing even with the SEk3500u 5.1 over ARC, right?
Bite the bullet and get a new SEK3500 with a warranty (from an authorized Samsung dealer)!

FYI, my first SEK arrived with a dead VP9 chip which the average guy might not have been aware of since it still played 4K YouTube videos... just not in 4K.

As for the 1.4 Receiver, your are correct. You would only be getting plain "lossy" Dolby Digital rather than "lossless" Dolby TrueHD audio. But at least you would be getting a fantastic 4K picture with HDR.

Rather than going ARC (which I don't help people on because there are too many AVRs out there) I would run the HDMI from the xb1s to the SEK and probably stick with the optical from the xb1s to your Receiver which will give you exactly the same audio.

Once you have the SEK-3500 don't forget to turn on HDMI UHD Color on the input you have your xb1s plugged into.

Have fun!

My daughter just had the same thing happen to her 60hu8550 back in October. Samsung said they would fix it, then they said they wouldn't, then they said they would pay for the part but not the labor, and then they said they would do nothing. Finally just a few week ago they agreed to give her $1200 for the TV and they would come pick it up. They picked it up last week and still waiting on her check. Lot of calling and then emailing the President of Samsung to get things to happen. Granted her TV was out of warranty but at least they did something. A lot of frustration on her part.

Question for you guys, I have this set and I enjoy it quite a bit. I just recently bought a Martin Logan soundbar and want to make sure I'm getting the most out of it. For my DirecTV box, in the sound settings on the tv, it allows me to pick either PCM or DTS Neo 2:5 which is the better setting? Also these are the only choices when I watch anything on my K8500 blu ray player. Is there any way to get DTS or Dolby Digital to pass through when watching a blu ray? I knowould most tvs have an issue passing 5.1 through them but I didn't know if there was a work around.

My 50" HU8550 with Innolux panel + SEK3500U is one of the best sets in my house, in fact it does a better job at SD then my KS9000! Works great with PS4 Pro, Samsung K8500, Roku Ultimate with HDR. I see no color banding. However I believe all Innolux panels were 10Bit, not sure if that helps.

Love my HU8550!

Welllll it's a sad day. I have a UN65HU9000 my wife mentioned that the TV wouldn't turn off. I have the Evolution kit and tried that remote power button, nothing. This morning I jumped through the menu and did a "reset." After the reset the TV booted back up with the Evolution kit boot up screen. I couldn't select anything, the remote does not function. I called Samsung and they had me use the toggle control on the rear of the tv, the center power button doesn't function. Samsung gave me contact info for a local repair company here in the Denver area.

I love this forum and have learned so much here, I'm hoping that there may be an outside chance that someone here has some suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

@JPeffer12 DTS should sound a lot better than PCM, but just compare the sounds.

I have a Pioneer (see sig for link) and Blue Ray is connected to it (HDMI) then from Pioneer by HDMI into TV.

Panasonic DVD connects by HDMI directly into TV so my video settings are 'customized' for that input and TV passes DTS (or PCM) audio into Pioneer. DVD has an Optical output but Pioneer won't see an optical when an HDMI is connected.
__________________________________________________ ___________-

@thatpilotguy Assuming you've gone through removing power and bleed off, I would try it with your original connection box in place of your SEK 3500.

If it works with that, you've narrowed your problem to just the 3500.

You can download your firmware file from Samsung (link in my sig for 8550 takes you to their 8550 download, but you should be able to navigate from there to their 9000 download). You can load (1.7 GB for 8550) the firmware to a thumb drive and connect/flash your firmware without any internet to your TV. This would be pre-3500 firmware, but a lot of 3500 users like to keep their basic firmware updated as well.

To update your 3500, you must use a firmware from the 'K' series.

One thing about Samsung TV firmware is that there's no way back from a firmware flash, it will only accept a newer version, so if it's defective software (happens) you have to wait for Samsung to put out a newer version. This is one reason I'm so reluctant to update a TV that's working perfectly now (if it ain't broke...) as I've had to wait weeks for them to issue perfected software before.

HU8550 owner here. I briefly putz'd around with the Explore 3D feature back when it was still available. Now that Sammy removed it from the list of features avail on their SmartTV's - where's the best spot to do some viewing/streaming of 3D content? Mainly looking for some free sources of material, as not currently an owner of any 3D players, discs, etc...thanks -

There's a lot of 3D on YouTube, a lot of terrible and some great.

Look at some of the "snake" stuff to start with and then some of the demo clips from some of the makers.

For the very best 3D, you need to spend $65 or so for a Blue Ray player.

I ran the 4k blu ray of The Revenant on the new Xbox One on another input with the UHD color on. Even though both are technically in 1080p on the screen, as I switched between inputs I could clearly see that the 4k version was crisper and had brighter and deeper colors. Even my wife clearly noticed the difference, and she usually just looks at me like I'm crazy!

Next, I ran played the 4k blu ray of The Revenant on HDMI input 3 with no UHD Color, and I compared that to the blu ray running on the other input. Now it was supposedly presenting the film on the screen in 4k, but the difference in colors and crispness between it and the regular blu ray was not noticeable to my eye.

So based on my experiment, for right now I think it's better to hook it up to an HDMI input that will let you turn on UHD color than to run it on HDMI 3 with no UHD Color. Maybe this has to do what what you're saying, how the Xbox won't let you run it at 10 bits on Input 3, but it will on the other inputs. I know this is just anecdotal evidence and based on just one film, but I thought I'd report it in case anyone else who is playing 4k blu rays without yet upgrading to the SEK-3500 wants to give it a shot.
This didn't end up working for me. HBO Now stopped playing movies and said HDCP error, so I had to switch back to HDMI 3 and back to 8 bits to get that to work.

This helped me decide.... my new SEk-3500U is now on order. I tried for a few on ebay, they are closing for ~$300 used. Seems like too much to me, refurb is going for $330-350, and new is 400.

Anyone know how to program the long remote to a cable box? Any Samsung page I find references buttons the remote doesn't have.

I recently got an sek-3500 and my cable box is no longer powering on and off automatically. So I'd like to program the long remote to the cable box so I can turn it on manually from a remote.

Hey guys,

Do you think this is normal. It's been like this since I bought the tv few years ago, but it's starting to bother me more and more. I have Verizon Fios, and only on this input does my tv look pixelated, and kind of like an oil painting around the edges and in the background. I am thinking it's the TV trying to upscale Verizon's broadcast. I don't have this problem with Netlfix, or DVD's. Only with my Verizon fios cable service. I've changed my HD-STB from Verizon, even changed the HDMI cable, still not any better. I've attached some pictures from the TV. What do you guys think?

edit: It's a 65" HU8550, bought from the Amazon black friday special few years ago.

That looks like SD channels. Are those HD Channels? I am not familiar with Verizon FIOS' offerings since we only have Satellite and Cox down here. Having said that if it has always been that way then the source seems like the culprit. Have you ever attached an HD TV antenna to your set to pull in those same channels to compare? looks like Fox and ABC based on the actors I recognize.

Question DVR out goes into which HDMI port ? (HU8550)

Which HDMI port is best to feed in the signal from a PHD or Channel Master DVR to my HU8550 ?

HDMI 1 (STB)

HDMI 2 (DVI)

HDMI 3 (MHL)

or does it make a difference?

Hard to say from those pics but the OTA broadcasts on my 65HU8550 leave a LOT to be desired. I got it from the same Amazon Black Friday deal as you. Maybe broadcast HD just isn't that great.

Broadcast HD OTA is thee best possible TV picture! Looks amazing here! I could never go back to compressed cable or dish.

Looking for some expert advice from the group. My 50" plasma that the kids watch and game on just died. Need to replace it. I have a 50" HU8550 already. I need to buy something so..........should I 1) give them the HU8550 and get a newer model (like a KS8000 or 9000)? or 2) buy them something cheap and get the SEK-3500 box to improve the 8550?

I watch HD Uverse about 90% of the time on the 8550 and the rest would be streamed Netflix or an occasional movie streamed from my server holding BR based MKV files.

Expert opinions anyone? I can't help but think that for $400 for a SEK plus another $1000 or so for a TV for the kids, could I take that same $1400 and/or a bit more and do better than the 8550+SEK combo?

Give them the 8550. Don't get me wrong, I love mine and it's a monster of a tv, but it's been too buggy for the high end price. The only feature the 8550 has that the new ones don't is 3D, and that could be good for your kids tv actually. I'd go with a hopefully bug-free new model with true HDR.

Agree with Dr. Whizzzzzz. My OTA PQ is excellent. It's mostly in the settings.

Any answer or comment on the above?
