Has anyone here got their sets calibrated by ChadB or some other professional calibrator recently or had them come back for a "tune-up". If so, can you give us some feedback as it relates to the PQ of the HU9000.

Had a 55" ES 8000 and the panel needed to be replaced. Instead of replacing the panel BB gave me full credit for the purchase price about 2.5 years ago. Christmas Eve bought the 65" 9000 for a whopping $100 more.

It was just delivered and so far we are enjoying it. My other tv was calibrated and I will eventually get this one done. For the time being I plan on copying someone else's settings and then tweak as needed until calibrated.

Also we used Skype a lot on the other tv with the kids and my parents and we have already missed that feature. Is there a certain model that works well with this tv?

HU9000 comes with built in camera. Sorry, never use it. It stays in on the top of the set.

Hello,

For the past three days my Netflix and Amazon has not worked on my HU8700FXZA. I tried turning off the tv then the power strip/surge protector which had worked in the past, but not this time around. So finally in a slight disgust I called Netflix and asked them about the problem. The solution was as simple as logging out of Netflix, turning off the tv, turning off the power to the tv, then unplug the WIFI router for a minute, repowering the router and wait for it to boot up properly, then turn on the power to the tv, turn on the tv, and log back into Netflix. Eureka, for me the problem was solved! I sure hope your problem is as easy, but then again you may have already figured this out on your own.

Regards,
Ken

If I hook up the original OCB to update the firmware, should I bother calibrating it using Peter's settings or is updating the firmware enough? Should I do the sek backup first on my dad's TV (borrowing his OCB)? Do I need to back up both tvs?

When re-installing the Original OCB, just do the FW update.
Since you won't be watching it, except to maybe checkout that the FW did improve the PQ, don't worry about calibrating it.
I do so because I post the settings for those without the SEK-3500U.
When FW updating is done, power down, pull plug, Power On on the Remote, to kill residual electricity. Swap OCBs.
No Original OCB backups required.
Plug back in, and Power up.
Good idea to do an Evolution Kit Backup on the 3500 before you start, to replace old OCB values, with your current 3500 ones.

I think the adc settings are what is really different from the factory.

Standard procedure is to run ADC calibration and then set white balance after any kind of electronic parts swap.

At least that's what service manuals say to do for the ones I got my hands on.

Small changes in WB seem to back this, but I'm not going to ask anyone to go into ADC to really check things out considering the greater than average chance of making things purple.

EDIT: Let me change that to main/display boards and panel changes. On my ES6500 that blew a power supply board the tech didn't do squat except make sure things looked OK. That's not saying that any more should be done, but even the so called techs here in So Cal don't really do much besides change parts and screw crap up.

Way back when, I lost 2 display boards on an old CRT rear projection TV. That thing took ~4+ hours just to align the crts electronically & the A-holes just hit auto align, which was never correct.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised one bit of each panel had a chip in it holding info from the manufacturer/lot/etc, that is pulled when the correct panel/TV type is selected on the main/display board and figured into the ADC algorithm.

Regards,

Steve

Nope. Had a tune up scheduled. But canceled it after punching in Peter's great Aug.18 settings and subsequently getting the calman home express package.

There are 2 items in the service Menu: ADC and ADC Results. On non 4K sets, the Pattern is set to Checkerboard and the ADC run to get the ADC Results. In the 4K sets, the Checkerboard Pattern has been deleted, so the ADC test can't be performed. So, it's best to write down the ADC Results for Future Reference. I've tried an external Checkerboard pattern and it didn't end so well. The 4K up scaling messed up the Pattern.

In case some of you missed it:

The UHD Alliance (UHDA) – a global consortium comprising some of the biggest names in the consumer electronics industry (members) – has published the minimum specifications that define a premium Ultra High-Definition (UHD) experience for consumers in the home.

Products and services which meet the performance metrics will be eligible to license a “Ultra HD Premium” logo from the UHDA for promotional and marketing purposes.

“ULTRA HD PREMIUM” Logo

“ULTRA HD PREMIUM” logo is trademark of the UHD Alliance, Inc.

Announced last night at the UHD Alliance’s press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 in Las Vegas, here are the required specifications for a television to receive the “Ultra HD Premium” logo:

UHD Alliance Technical Specifications Overview

The UHD Alliance has developed three specifications to support the next-generation premium home entertainment experience.

The three specifications cover the entertainment ecosystem in the following categories:
  • Devices (currently, television displays, with other devices under consideration)
  • Distribution
  • Content

A high level overview of each technical specification can be found below.
Please join the UHD Alliance for full access to all technical and test specifications.

Devices

The UHD Alliance supports various display technologies and consequently, have defined combinations of parameters to ensure a premium experience across a wide range of devices.

In order to receive the UHD Alliance Premium Logo, the device must meet or exceed the following specifications:
  • Image Resolution: 3840x2160
  • Color Bit Depth: 10-bit signal
  • Color Palette (Wide Color Gamut)
    • Signal Input: BT.2020 color representation
    • Display Reproduction: More than 90% of P3 colors
  • High Dynamic Range
    • SMPTE ST2084 EOTF
    • A combination of peak brightness and black level either:
      • More than 1000 nits peak brightness and less than 0.05 nits black level or
      • More than 540 nits peak brightness and less than 0.0005 nits black level

Distribution

Any distribution channel delivering the UHD Alliance content must support:
  • Image Resolution: 3840x2160
  • Color Bit Depth: Minimum 10-bit signal
  • Color: BT.2020 color representation
  • High Dynamic Range: SMPTE ST2084 EOTF

Content Master

The UHD Alliance Content Master must meet the following requirements:
  • Image Resolution: 3840x2160
  • Color Bit Depth: Minimum 10-bit signal
  • Color: BT.2020 color representation
  • High Dynamic Range: SMPTE ST2084 EOTF

The UHD Alliance recommends the following mastering display specifications:
  • Display Reproduction: Minimum 100% of P3 colors
  • Peak Brightness: More than 1000 nits
  • Black Level: Less than 0.03 nits

The UHD Alliance technical specifications prioritize image quality and recommend support for next-generation audio.

I guess it's time to get a new TV when they come out or maybe we can figure out how to change the HU9000's settings to make it a 2016 model? lol

What was the peak brightness on the HU9000 again? I know someone posted it but I forgot what it was. I thought it was somewhere in the 400 nit range?

I'm really glad that the HDR specs are finally moving along.

All these 2016 sets look really cool and i'm sure just like last year, this year's sets will have an even better picture and at 1000 nits, probably perfect for home use, but I also believe that we need to see is what HDR standard Netflix and other's are going to support and provide content in the near term. LG supports Dolby Vision and Samsung the open HDR standard. I believe that this will be the determining factor, in consumer near term purchases. Especially if Netflix and other streaming services and Blu-Rays support only Dolby Vision. Maybe in the long term the sets will support both standards but I think if they were, they would support them now or announce that they will. We will have to see what develops over the next couple of months.

I remember you had you set professionally calibrated a while back.

Having a frequent problem now ever since last self installed USB update. TV quite often refuses to shut off. Today for the 2nd time in a week, I've had to pull the plug. Note: this is only a problem with the 3500 and not the OCB.

Mine will occasionally just shut it's self off and then back on for no reason. The sound also cuts out sometime. If I reboot the Denon the sound stays off, but if I turn either the TV or the DirecTV STB off and back on it returns. May have to get back there and swap out the HDMI cables.
