From what i understand, raise contrast till it either clips or no longer raises brightness. then adjust the backlight to your preference

That is a very good question. Once the 65" Reference panel hits the street the dilemma will be even more interesting assuming that the MSRP is "reasonable".

I ran by the Costco at St Johns Town Center in Jacksonville and they had plenty of Vizio's.

They've set up the 70 inch E, M, and P right next to each other playing the same loop of nonsense. Unfortunately the loop appears to be zoomed in standard definition advertising which appears somewhat blurry and awful on all the TV's... what are they thinking.........

The gist of it is this: it's probably an issue that needs either a driver update from nvidia or a firmware update from Vizio or both. Basically from my testing, the TV does seem capable of accepting a 4K signal at 60 hz from the video card (i.e. it's within it's specs and I'm able to successfully create such a resolution in nvidia control panel, abet getting a black screen), however for whatever reason right now it is unable to actually function properly at that resolution. Also there is some EDID issues currently with Nvidia's drivers (the EDID in Windows shows that the native resolution of the Vizio is 1920x1080, not 3840x2160) which is probably contributing to this problem (i.e. 3840x2160 is not even an option in the PC resolution section of the nvidia control panel).

Also, I too am having the Netflix split-screen issue when playing sub 4K content. It only happens with Netflix and turning the TV on and off does not help. This is on a P55.

trying my luck with sony a1e after what feels like being in jail when I look at 2 lg c7's I've had. Jailbars you can see in movies and games isn't acceptable for this kind of money. LG calls it "normal" maybe sony won't with same panel.

I don't even think is was sarcasm. It sounded more like that guy is on top of his game and will get things fixed as he usually does.

Has anyone tried playing video via the USB port?. If so what formats will it accept? Will it take a hard drive output?

My interest is in 4K MP4 files with a USB stick.

Thanks

I have a 1440p 144hz gsync monitor anyways for pc but having this tv would be a good option if i wanted to use it with pc though

If you have a particular small file you want me to test I can. I did play a 1080p .mp4 for from my stick.

4k video

While I don't have my 70P yet, I've started encoding some of the Blender open movies in a format that I think (according to Vizio support chat, anyway) will play via the USB thumb drive.

Here's Tears of Steel, encoded from the raw YUV 4:2:0 sources in H.265 format. The AC3 (DD) soundtrack was also encoded from the raw FLAC files.

You can either use the magnet link or download the zipped .torrent file.

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:4E7A45A68A05849833B7117D8C5AF4 AFA190393D&dn=ts4k.h265.ac3.mkv&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftra cker.open bi tt or re n t.com%3a80&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.publicbt.com%3a8 0

I'm planning on doing Big Buck Bunny over the weekend. Feedback would be great so I know these are the right formats before dedicating all this encoding time on a wild goose chase.

- Jim

------

Here's the command line I used for the nerds out there:

ffmpeg -probesize 1G -analyzeduration 1G -i ts4k.y4m -i tearsofsteel-surround.flac -c:a ac3 -c:v libx265 -x265-params preset=slow -x265-params crf=18 -filter:v "scale=iw*min($width/iw\,$height/ih):ih*min($width/iw\,$height/ih), pad=$width:$height$width-iw*min($width/iw\,$height/ih))/2$height-ih*min($width/iw\,$height/ih))/2" ts4k.h265.ac3.mkv
Attached Files
File Type: zip ts4k.h265.ac3.torrent.zip (23.5 KB, 231 views)

FWIW, Vizio tech support said FAT32 formatted Flash drive only.

To get audio to my AVR without relying on ARC or an optical cable, I'll be seeing if I have any luck with an HDMI splitter, though that's likely to cause issues with any HDMI 2.0-needing modes I may try to use on the P's HDMI5 port.

Okay, Googer, we'll wait for your results. I'll be especially interested in the RB results with your Xbox directly connected to the television. I'm not digging my Xbox's HDMI cable out of the morass in my A/V cabinet just to try this (using the TV's speakers for audio, because there'd be no other way to get sound other than hooking up an optical S/PDIF cable via a ). Whatever lag (or inaccuracy in E-EDID reporting) is added by my AVR is there to stay.

Of course, your results may not be the same as mine would be for the 55"er, since VA panels are supposedly higher in display lag.

Whatever. If I had a Bodnar Lag Tester I probably would do a series of tests to see how lag varied when tested through my AVR as compared to direct connection and the lag added by turning on various display processing in the television (before switching to the game picture mode, which has everything disabled, the lag measured by RB3 was 33 ms higher). But the RB guitar controller isn't an accurate enough test to be worth going through all of that (and possibly introduces lag by being wireless). Still, the fact that using HDMI 5 removed 52 ms of lag as reported by that test is informative.

(On wireless controller lag, MS claims that the Xbox One's controller reduces it by 20% vs the Xbox 360's. Since they don't reveal what the wireless lag is, it could be 4 ms versus 5 ms, but they do state that reducing it was a goal of the XB1's controller design).

The user manuals are posted on Vizio's site now, at least the 55" & 65". At quick glance I noted the power consumption for the 55" is listed as 107.7W while their site says 210W. The manual also says the Refresh Rate is 240Hz Effective so I guess that means 120 native.

Yes, I think we can take that as a confirmation of 120Hz native refresh rate.

I had an 70" Elite for a few months, black levels were better than my Pioneer Elite 101FD. COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey looked phenomenal on it.
Viewing angles were horrible on it (of course going from Plasma to LCD I had my expectations in check). Had pink/cyan blotches. Returned to Best Buy after Sharp approved the return.

I now have a Sony 65W850A, viewing angles are slightly better than Elite, screen uniformity is a lot better too and black levels aren't that bad either.

So there is a reason it's listed at BestBuy must have issues on it.

Thanks JSTANTON,

but what video format will play on the USB drive.

I have a Vizio XTV553 and Vizio had promised all kinds of video play back on it's USB input. Never really happened.

I know that 2014 Sony and Samsung sets will play 4K MP4 files from USB sticks just fine. Tried it at BB.

Thanks Eugene

i just found this forum - someone referenced it at amazon - here

(grrrr! not enough posts for THAT either - here's the URL >>> http :// www amazon com/VIZIO-P502ui-B1-50-Inch-Ultra-Smart/product-reviews/B00MK39H68/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1& sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending ---- remove spaces as required )

my interest in the 50-in vizio (p-series) stems from my need for a quality primary display for my hobby: military flight simulators

50-in may actually be a little large for me - 44-in seems to be the "sweet spot" --- i have a custom cockpit with a 27-in touchscreen directly in front of my knees, rudder pedals below that and joystick/throttle etc around me ---- i'm afraid anything much larger than 50-in would result in me looking upward toward the center of the screen

in my research, i've also come across this thread which discusses "downsampling"

(see here >>> http :// www neogaf com/forum/showthread.php?t=509076 ---- remove spaces as required)

i recently built a flight sim computer with the specs in my sig

i notice there is only one thread for this TV ---- normally, i would create a thread for each question - i don't want to be "the rude new guy" and hijack the thread and i'm not sure if these topics are appropriate for this forum - so mods, please move this to the appropriate area if i'm mistaken

thx and have a great day
I think the Amazon reviews are for other sizes I believe the 50" is not out to stores yet It should have a VA panel 49" is an LGD (IPS) 4K size although AUP has an IPS variant as well as the usual AUP VA panels so no guarantee on that until it's verified here or in a credible published review . This is correct thread for any size Vizio P model the threads here are usually all sizes within a series .

One way to make sure copy and paste URL links work is type [URL*] at the beginning just before http: and [/URL*] at the end of link. (both without wildcard * ofc) The website here will usually post a URL as such when you post but not
always correctly if it doesn't recognize something in the URL and sometimes if you return and edit and re post it will also allow you test the link and re post if needed this works in any forum and lots of other places .

Above will also allow you test the link and re post if needed this works in any forum and lots of other places .
here is a working link , http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-P502ui-B...owViewpoints=1

50" in flight sim might be cool .I could also see 3 adjacent 3 1080P 32" 39" or 40" in flight sim. Samsung has a 40" 4K set for $999.00 if a 50" is too big other than that unless you want a Seiki . I use a 60" Samsung plasma for driving sims with a G27 wheel ofc thats not close in like a flight sim cockpit
I'm usually 4-5 ft away in the gaming chair . Some of the game or flight sim forums may be in the know on that with flight sim cockpits . These guys might know http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/forumd...ckpit-Builders

The fact that the 55" and 65" share a manual and mny specs including 178-degree viewing angle means I will be shocked if those two sized contain different panel types.

The 55" is confirmed to be IPS-type.

Someone with a 65" needs to send a definitive picture of the subpixels.

It would be unbelievable to me if the 65" is not also IPS.

60" and 70" also share a manual (and many specs including a 176-degree viewing angle),

The 'Walmart' manuals can be ignored - the new manuals just released on the Vizio website are the official manuals (and probably match what owner's are getting in their boxes).

I now have a Sony 65W850A, viewing angles are slightly better than Elite, screen uniformity is a lot better too and black levels aren't that bad either.

So there is a reason it's listed at BestBuy must have issues on it.

thanks for the heads up! much appreciated...
i'll tinker with the 70P when it arrives....

Didnt the one 65" owner already take a look and say it looks like VA? not sure why it would be "unbelievable"
