ULTRAFLIX 4K is LIVE on SAMSUNG 2014 4K UHD TVs !!!

If you have a 4K Samsung ... go to Apps and download Ultraflix. You need to register via the TV (a painful process) and the email needs to be verified. Gmail sent the verification to my Spam folder.

In any case, its live and has a ton of free 4K content. Lot of scrolling required. Most of the stuff you find on youtube is also here. App is a little buggy (ver 1.0).

Is Samsung the only brand that offers the Ultraflix app? Can the app be downloaded to any other brands?

Take responsibility for your own actions...society is not here to look after you...
In other words, if you order coffee, expect it to be hot for christsake!

I cant get it to work. It downloaded, and loads fine. When I select a free video it looks like its going to start, but then it reverts to tv mode and exits out of smarthub

Hey, I work for NanoTech, but not the branch doing UltraFlix. Thanks for posting up the news. I'm actually buying some of these sets myself and the Samsung 40" is arriving Friday for me. I also got the LG 55UB8500. Our team is out here in Vegas, and we're doing high framerate stuff and casino stuff (rather than the 4k streaming being done in California). I'm looking forward to sharing the details of the latest stuff we've been working on, but mum's the word right now. But it's cool to see the latest developments with 4:4:4 working on the sammy 40 and the LG 49 and 55. There sizes to pick from for 60 hz gaming is a start!

So, this is kinda weird. I live in Canada. I downloaded and installed and registered UltraFlix on my LG G3 phone and it seems to work OK. I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere on my new Samsung UN55HU8550 Apps. Am I missing something or is it still not available for Samsung in Canada, I Googled Ultraflix and would have assumed that they would advise us what countries the Samsung app is available in????

I hope it's free because the selection is beyond awful https://ultraflix.com/listing.php?cat=1

I wouldn't watch that stuff in any resolution. Question. Some of this stuff has been available for a bit as 720p/1080p. How do they make it 4k or is it not "real" 4k?

There's lots more choice than they show here. Don't know why this link is so limited. Lots of free content and lots of PAID movies and content.
Good point about 4K sharpness though. I've seen quite a few 4K demos that looked significantly softer than some 1080P videos I've seen. Having owned a great many camcorders over the years, and, informally testing them for resolution, almost all of the 1080i/p versions were not even close to actually having 1920x1080 resolution. The only one that was pin sharp was the JVC HM1 with basically a flat line out to the limits of 1920 horizontal resolution. Too bad it was only capable of 1080i but my PS3 was fabulous at showing them with no visible combing or jaggies, even during still frames.
I would guess the same is true for 4K camcorders' actual resolution, although it would be harder to notice, as true 1080P resolution looks pretty darn good.

Where's the app on the 2014 Sony TVs??

I have a feeling they're going to announce it's 2015 Sony only. As there's been absolute radio silence on the 2014s since September

I think this Is a great application once they can get it to work properly. I'm not posting to "bash" Ultraflix but to tell you the facts as of this date. So here is my story.

I see all the news about Ultraflix and that Interstellar is available in 4K. $9.99, ok a little pricey but i'll try it. Mid-day I go to the SmartHub, create an account, look at the Interstellar trailer and everything works fine. Later that night about 9 pm EST, i'm all ready, can't wait, start the movie. The movie starts and about 2 or 3 minutes in, the movie freezes, then starts, then a couple of minutes later freezes, starts, etc, etc. So I pause the movie, go to the settings and notice that you can change the download speed settings. Mine was on Auto which is supposed to find the right speed for your connection. I change it to 12 MBS, still no good, then to 10, then to 8, then to 6. At 6 MBS it only froze every 15 minutes or so. OK so i'm able to get through the movie but with all the stopping and starting, it really ruins the experience. Also I noticed that when you get a lot of action, i.e. a lot of data needing to be transferred, the movie freezes and these are usually the best parts of the movie! Also the application tries to keep correcting by slowing down the data transfer speed to stop the freezing and in doing so you loose resolution AND they slow down the Audio stream as well meaning i'm starting with Dolby Digital then it changes to Dolby Surround. To add insult to injury, although I was getting Dolby Digital audio when things were working, there was no sound coming from my center channel. I tried everything! Even went to another streaming site to make sure it wasn't my equipment and played the trailer and the audio was fine. At the end of the day, it was a terrible experience.

I have FiOS with a 75/75 mbps hard wired link to my Samsung HU9000 and I have absolutely NO problems with Netflix, VUDU and other streaming services so i'm not sure if Ultraflix just doesn't have enough servers or high speed links to the internet.

I applaud Ultraflix for providing a 4K service and I love my Samsung HU9000 but they are going to have to evolve before I will ever rent another movie from them.

BTW, I had to watch Interstellar the next day in order to better understand the movie and there was a Samsung update with a new version of Ultraflix, I think it is 1.7, but no change in performance of the application. I got the same terrible experience until the app slowed down the speed to where I was probably watching 1080p or something in that range and it still froze!

I watched it on my Vizio P65 using the Ultraflix app past weekend and had no problem. I am using a TWC 300 mpbs connection (hard wired) - normally when I start up Ultraflix it detects my connection at around 25 mpbs.

What time of day did you watch?

The connection to your provider is not that critical as long as it's over 25mbps because as your connection is showing, you only need about 20-25mbps for the streaming. Maybe there is a problem with the Samsung implementation of the app because there are similar issues from multiple users on the Samsung threads.

DD can have just the left and right channels, in which case it is DD 2.0 (rather than DD 5.1). For ordinary pcm stereo, an AVR will ordinarily fill in a created center channel signal, but not for stereo DD 2.0.

Is this app completely broken? Anytime I go into it on my hu8700 and play something. I get a Comercial that plays fine then nothing but a black screen. The content I selected never plays. My Internet is 50mbs so I'm sure that's not the issue

Uh, I should mention also that sometimes you get DD 1.5 that has been upconverted from stereo in a dumb way that leaves all the channels other than left and right empty of any signal.

Yep that's part of the problem, you have to wait, and wait and eventually the movie will start.

It should be there but if not
1) Check for updates and run them.
2) Go to the smart hub and click and hold over any one of the apps. You should see a pull down menu, select update all apps.

To fully re-create 1920x1080 pixels you need double of each axis in the recording device.

This is from Nyquist's sampling theorem. Basically it states that you need to sample whatever signal (light, sound, anything) at double the frequency that you want in order to re-create the original signal faithfully. So, you need a 4K camera to fully max out a 1080p video stream's top quality potential.

If you want to display at 1080p, get a UHD camera and downsample, is what I'm saying. If you then want to max out 4K video quality, you need 8K cameras. And so on. It's universal and fundamental. And 100% proven, established science.

Probably the best way then is to get 4K webrips instead of trying to stream them. 4K Interstellar, sounds great.

Thanks RLBURNSIDE. Good point and something I was actually aware of. Of course, you also have to mention the typical bayer pattern in most sensors which also limits resolution.
My old JVC-HM1 has a 10 megapixel sensor (so I assume it has 5M green, 2.5M red and blue individual pixels) so I wouldn't be surprised if it does indeed downscale a higher res image down to 1920x1080. Regardless, it is the only HD camcorder of the many I've had that actually approached the limits of 1080 resolution. Most of the others looked positively blurry by comparison.
Getting a little off-topic here so I won't make any more comments on this thread regarding this topic.

I like the fact that Ultraflix is now offering a lot of rental movies in 4K including the Godfather series ... the quality is REALLY good (compared to the Blu-Ray version I own).

What I don't like is the fact that their menu system really sucks. One needs to scroll a lot to get to where you want to go.

I wish they spent sometime and redesign the menu system.
