The js mod as far as I see gives you hdr at Amazon? Because in Holland we don't have access to that.

You are correct.

Before you apply the so called JS Mod which is just another way of saying hacking the Advanced Service Menu you might want to be aware that even if you do the mod, just like in Canada, you still won't get Amazon HDR or even the Amazon app on your TV in Holland as it is only available to the United States.

As for these posts from members like @p5browne on this thread and others telling you that "Over to the side, Members noted improved Contrast and Color" and "improved Picture Quality" there are even more outrageous claims by others such as the guy claiming that he gets HDR and WCG on 1080p sources via the Plex app which is technically impossible!

Even @p5browne who up until recently claimed that he got a brighter picture after doing the JS Mod has come to realize the peak nits brightness on his set with or without the JS Mod is identical.

Before you do the JS Mod and risk "bricking" your purchase or voiding your warranty do yourself a favour and read this posts by @ray0414 who will tell you this is nothing but a placebo effect...

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lc...l#post44895346

Although some guys have bought into these effects being real many more guys like @ray0414 who has owned multiple Samsung models including a JS9500 along with owners like @galonzo who owns both an HU9000 and a JS model who has posted side-by-side comparison pictures, can tell you otherwise.

Most interesting of all is that @p5browne -- the biggest advocate of all who has spent many months promoting hacking the SEK-3500 Evo Kit on the above thread -- recently shared that he has removed the JS Mod from his HU9000 stating "the updates have made it look extremely good".

On the other hand some owners of the HU9000 who have performed the JS Mod continue to claim these subjective improvements. This can mean only one thing..... Either @p5browne is wrong or ALL these guys who continue to retain the JS Mod on their HU9000 are seeing nothing more than a PLACEBO EFFECT.

Cheers!

First of all, this is not the HU9000 forums. As to the JS Mod for the JU7100, count me in the placebo effect then.

I have went through several iterations of calibrations on my 7100 prior to the JS Mod. I tried BT 1886 calibrations before the JS Mod but they never resulted in anything more than crushed blacks and loss of detail. @ArchonX had (and still has, in my opinion) the best pre-JS Mod calibration which was Rec 709 with 2.2 Gamma. On a side note, I could care less what my peak NIT is.

Now, after the JS Mod ON MY UN55JU7100 WITH TS01 PANEL (I want to make this perfectly clear because I don't own a HU9000), I can tell you that I DEFINITELY HAVE BETTER BLACKS AND A MUCH BETTER BLACK TO WHITE TRANSITION (AKA GAMMA). I don't have to prove anything that my eyes see.

As to telling someone that this is a placebo effect, let them decide by doing their own visual assessment. If they are not comfortable with the Advanced Service Menu, then perhaps they should pay for a calibration or try one of the calibrations from cnet or rtings.

I am pretty sure @tampa8 and others will agree with what I have said.

As to the thread you linked, there are references about people making others feel inferior that their TV doesn't have the JS Mod and their picture won't look good without it. After I finished laughing out loud.... if someone is upset because another stranger told them their TV won't look good without the JS Mod, then they either need to A) Buy the best TV they can buy (maybe you or @ray0414 can suggest one?), B) Hire an ISF certified calibration specialist, C) Learn how to calibrate, or D) Stop listening to strangers, including me and you.

See this post and let me know if I did any bullying....

Does anyone have before and after measurements with this "JS mod?" Otherwise, it's all just anecdotal evidence.

Anecdotal evidence: based on personal observation, case study reports, or random investigations rather than systematic scientific evaluation

When someone can provide you with x/y/Y values for Absolute Black (16 for Limited RGB and 0 for Full RGB), then perhaps you could give measurements on how the JS Mod (or firmware updates, if you believe those change picture quality) improves Contrast and Brightness. But, since Absolute Black cannot be measured (*** with an i1 Display Pro or i1 Pro 2 ***), I don't believe you will find systematic scientific evaluation that proves or disproves what users such as myself see.

Yeah, but black levels can be measured, as can contrast. I don't remember exactly what I got for mine, but black level was somewhere around 0.035 cd/m^2 (with smart led off). If I did the mod and saw significantly lower black levels, I'd agree there is improvement.

Ok, I need to revise my previous post to include that I can't measure Absolute Black with my i1 Display Pro or i1 Pro 2.

i1 Pro 2: Luminance Measurement range: 0.2 cd/m2 to 1,200 cd/m2

i1 Display Pro: Luminance Measurement Range: 0.1 cd/m2 to 1,000 cd/m2

Interesting experience with my 60JU7100

I bought the Samsung 60JU7100 at a large retail chain that was selling their 2015 store display models
It was priced at $399

I wasnt even looking for a TV ..but thought for the price why not
So..the store had it hooked up to an antenna feed
They could not find the one connect box...so they discounted the price down to $359
I wasnt that concerned since I searched Ebay while I was in the store and saw that I could buy a one connect box with cable for $60( delivered)

So..any way..I get the Tv home ..put it in a spare bedroom and everything is fine
I have an extra Denon receiver sitting in the closet and some speakers ...so I decide to make it a 2.1 set up and user the ARC on the Denon

This is where things got wonky
As a point a few days ago when I tried to turn on the TV....all I got was clicking and the TV would periodically turn on and off
I called Samsung customer support and they stepped me through some procedures
While I had them on the phone I disconnected the one connect box from the TV( and the chain of the Denon receiver) and the 60JU7100 turned right on
hmmm
I turned this in as a warranty claim and Samsung is sending me another one connect box
But I am 99% sure the issue was with the Denon receiver..it is an E400

Interestingly enough
I connected it all back together and things have worked fine for at least a week now

anyone have issues using ARC with this TV?

For me ARC has been hit or miss. Some firmware versions it worked fine, then another version would cause issues. I've finally stopped using it and have stuck with optical.

Since you have it working now this probably isn't an issue, but you do have the correct OCB, right? This TV does not use the full size One Connect Box, but instead uses what they call the OCB Mini. Just had to ask...

yes

from the description on the Ebay item I bought
BN96-35817B One Connect Mini WITH CABLE

Samsung is sending me another unit under warranty
However...as I said before I am 99% sure the issue was with the Denon receiver

and now that you mention it...
I had done a update( prompted by the TV)...and then I had issues with the TV not wanting to turn on when connected to ARC
But again...for the last week it has been fine

Samsung JU7100 : BN96-35817H

The BN # on my OCB Mini: I assume the B versus the H means you have an older version.

After reading through the Forums, and all the ARC issues. Tried once. Got it working. Then intermittently, and finally opted for the Optic Connection instead, and have never looked back.

I assume they included the same box with all sizes of the JU7100?
I wonder what version I will receive when I get the warranty replacement from Samsung

Spoiler!
Hey maybe you ought to mention that to @p5browne who posts on the JS OWNERS threads all the time and yet doesn't own a JS.

But since this isn't an owners thread, I have just as much right as you do to post and provide @Bouncernl90 with another point of view and I can't believe that folks on this thread failed to tell @Bouncernl90 that the Amazon app is not available in Holland (just like it isn't available as a Smart Hub app in Canada where @p5browne and I live) but without missing a beat instead used the opportunity to sway yet another person into hacking their Advanced Service Menu.

Funny that you have a hangup that this isn't the HU9000 thread but have a link in your signature to @p5browne 's post on the HU7250 thread providing step-by-step instructions. Believe it or not AVS has rules that include "no hacking chat" as per the following:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-bl...-you-post.html

Further to that in late 2015 AVS Super Moderator, @markrubin , specifically posted on the SEK-3500 thread that they have "a responsibility to not allow unauthorized access to a service menu that could brick your set" and admonished members to only discuss this topic via Private Message and I would be happy to provide a link for you but as I have come to learn @p5browne likes to persuade guys to hack their sets and now has a bunch of followers like yourself to help him carry out his mission in multiple threads and as a result mis-information keeps getting spread but no attempt is made to correct it.

By the way, those step-by-step instructions on how to hack the Samsung Advanced Service Menu are not thorough and are missing important information that could cause someone to "brick" their set.

As for you laughing out loud I literally sprayed coffee out my nose when I read in your post where you stated in all bolded caps, "I can tell you that I DEFINITELY HAVE BETTER BLACKS AND A MUCH BETTER BLACK TO WHITE TRANSITION (AKA GAMMA). I don't have to prove anything that my eyes see.".

Interesting that you state in your reply that you are "pretty sure @tampa8 and others will agree" with what you have said and I see some have already Liked your post. Are these the same guys that agree with posts circulating on this thread (and others) regarding the UHD Video Pack movies being HDR?

And while I am posting here, how about I correct some more mis-information. Contrary to what is circulating on the JU7100 thread and others threads -- although @p5browne visits other threads to use our knowledge to help him understand something, he does't bother coming back and providing you guys with the facts such as correcting the member who said that the Plex app provided HDR and WCG when viewing 1080p content.

Further to that there is a thread dedicated to HDR Content hosted by @ray0414 and as a result of guys like @p5browne asking questions as well as those who are confused based on his posts on other threads he frequents regarding the movies on the UHD Video Packs contain HDR, I wrote the following to dispel the myth.

In short no movies at the rime the video packs were released in 2014 included HDR metadata. Here is my post in it's entirety...

________________________________________

The Movies on the UHD Video Packs Are Not HDR

Owners of Samsung TVs across various AVS Threads are reporting that when playing movies off the UHD Video Packs it is maxing out their backlight and contrast and are concluding that that must mean they are HDR.

Overview

The first UHD Video Pack (CY-SUC10SH) was produced in early 2014 and included 5 movies as follows plus 3 documentaries...

  • G.I. Joe: Retaliation
  • World War Z
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • Night at the Museum
  • The Counselor
A second UHD Video Pack (CY-SUC10SH1) followed shortly afterwards hitting the street around August 2014 which contained the following 10 movies plus 30 documentaries...

  • G.I Joe: Retaliation
  • World War Z
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • Night at the Museum
  • The Counselor
  • Life of Pi
  • Star Trek (2009)
  • Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Forrest Gump
  • The Book Thief
Rumours

Although it was rumoured that Samsung was undertaking to roll out "the world’s very first readily available HDR material, as part of a new UHD Video Pack... as early as June 2015" to show off the capabilities of it's new 2015 SUHD JS televisions it never came to fruition and the only thing we ever saw were the Life of Pi and Exodus HDR clips available for download.

Synopsis

As previously noted these UHD Video Packs were produced long before the studios ever began encoding movies with HDR metadata and only 3 of the above titles have ever been encoded with WCG + HDR but not until 2016 so obviously an apparent glitch that is causing the Samsung TV's to be maxing out the backlight and contrast when playing movies from the UHD Video Packs.

The Biggest Reason of All

If these movies on the UHD Video Packs were in fact HDR I can assure you that @ray0414 would have them listed here and let people know that they can snag all 10 movies for as little as $99 bucks!!

Perhaps when I read this paragraph of his posts I might have misconstrued that it was his understanding that he would obtain Amazon HDR as a result of performing the mod.

The js mod as far as I see gives you hdr at Amazon? Because in Holland we don't have access to that.
Whatever the case I would be more concerned with these JS Mod instruction that require hacking the Advanced Service Menu posted all over AVS that are incomplete or piece meal or making unsubstantiated claims which could result in someone bricking their set or voiding their warranty.

Carry on.

I didn't wanted to start a war. If people are really seeing differences I would try it; if it didn't void my warranty.

Now just looking on all the forums for nice settings. Still very happy with the TV.

Re the Samsung UHD Video Pack. I did not post as being HDR.
When played on sets before the SEK-3500U, NO values were changed in your Main Menu.
After the SEK-3500U, Backlight was upped to 20, and Contrast to 100 same as Metadata does.
Why didn't it up the values without the SEK-3500U?

If you HAVEN'T tried it, as you state, then why berate those that do, and like what they're seeing?

I won't bother with quoting all of the rest. The last paragraph sums up everything I feel the need to reply to.

If you don't have patience and can't follow directions, any changes made in the Advanced or Normal Service Menu is not for you. I only recall one person who changed some values in the Service Menu and messed things up. That user admitted it was his "drunken" fault and @p5browne got him back on track very quickly.

I have also noted several times for people to make sure they understand that this could void their warranty.

It's a BUG. Stating that the "Movies ONLY have the Metadata" you are aware that the only movies containing metadata are HDR and that the authoring tools didn't even exist in 2014 when the UHD Video Packs were created.

To make my point that you have continued to perpetuate that they are HDR I could hunt down the posts of yours on the HDR Content thread where you asked if the movies on the UHD VIdeo Pack are HDR and after being told no you post something on one of the other threads you frequent with something along the lines of "well if it isn't HDR then what is it" which is why I finally did the research and posted my findings.

In fact just to put the confusion to rest once and for all I see @ray0414 has even posted pictures comparing the Star Wars SDR UHD Video Pack movie to the HDR version available on the UHD Blu-ray disc today...

If you HAVEN'T tried it, as you state, then why berate those that do, and like what they're seeing?

Well, maybe because this is the Audio Video Science Forum where claims should be supported by facts not the I like what I am seeing because I have copied a couple of settings from the JS model to my TV Forum.

Further more I don't want to risk ruining my TV, I don't want to void my warranty, and to answer the remainder of the questions it's against AVS rules to discuss entering the Advanced Service Menu on the public forum. Not only that you have taken to posting incomplete step-by-step instructions now!

Re other Forums: If the Members don't like my help there, they're free to tell me not to do so. The Likes seem to mean what I have to post is helpful.

Doesn't apply to me but with that being said I think I have you beat by a mile in the Like department.

Also note:
I DO NOT berate other Members like some Members have been doing lately!

You mean me? Asking members for Scientific proof or helping you and those you have led to believe the UHD Video Packs contain HDR material which they don't, or pointing out the instructions you posted are incomplete and against AVS Forum rules is now berating? OK.

What is being lost in all this, is the original JS Mod was passed onto Members that were being denied access to the Amazon HDR: namely 2013, 2014 sets with SEK-3500U, and the JU sets. (The JS Mod instructions were for Members to do it safely. NOT to be forced to buy a new set if they didn't have to!)

That was the ORIGINAL intent of the JS Mod. So you wish to deny these people the access now?

The `placebo affect' was noticed after. But upon calibrating with, and without the JS Mod, calibrating people plainly saw there was a difference on how the set calibrated. I posted better contrast and color, NOT brightness. Others have seen it, and enjoy it, others backed back off. Their personal decisions. Decisions they make, not you!

I originally questioned whether the Movies were HDR, and when told they were not, then posted they were changing values like metadata does, because the original was not. So you're now saying it's a glitch, but NO scientific explanation for it? (How come the `Bug' doesn't affect the Documentaries?)

Quite a few Members post things, that they later find were incorrect, but then post the corrected info. They're not going to go back through the years and correct past mistakes. As time marches on, all info changes, or becomes history.

Re my backing off on my HU, I can't get Amazon HDR here in Canada legally. But when, and if it does become available, with still no access with an HU + SEK-3500U, and there's sufficient viewing materials to watch, then it will be re-implemented.

The JU7100, does look better with the JS Mod, so will remain. My decision!

As I said, off to the side result.

Amazon HDR for SEK-3500U and JU Members is the primary reason for the JS Mod! (USA Only)

Done with back and forth

I have removed my previous comments that had nothing to do with the 7100.

Others can try whichever settings they want to try. I will help, via pm if necessary, for those who don't want to discuss service menu settings in this thread.

I will not apologize for believing what I see, and I do thank @p5browne for letting me know about the JS Mod.

Hey Charlie, a post of yours I can finally Like.

But just to touch briefly on your question regarding Amazon HDR where you stated "So you wish to deny these people the access now?". I am not denying anyone. I am just not prepared to continue watching guys post How To Guides or influence others to Mod their sets in the open forum. We all know how to use Private Messages and that is what the mods have asked us to do. What's so hard about that?

And I know this doesn't help you or me for that matter, but for those with the K8500 UHD Blu-ray Player the Amazon app on it does allow subscribers to view HDR material. And just to add to that it is rumoured that the K8500 will be the first Samsung device (other that the 2016 TV models) to allow Netflix HDR streaming to subscribers -- long before owners of JS or other years models. As a matter of fact the rumour mill is silent as to when that might occur... if ever!

Moving on, as for the above post referring to the UHD Video Packs, I wish the were HDR but as I said in my post to clarify the misunderstanding I didn't make this stuff up. The part highlighted below in red is what was reported by Forbes and other respected technical publications in 2015 -- long after the UHD Video Packs were in our hands...

So let me ask you a few questions...

Even if we were to believe the entire lot of 10 movies on the second Video Pack released in August 2014 were HDR and it wasn't a glitch causing the Backlight and Contrast to max out then:

a) why didn't they initially bump the Backlight and Contrast up to their maximum levels when we plugged them into our SEK-3500's?

b) why don't they appear really washed out when hooked up to the USB port on my 2014 HU7000 without the SEK-3500 like the downloadable HDR clips do when plugged into the HU7000 USB ports

c) how in God's green earth did Samsung manage to get their hands on 10 movies produced in HDR long before the authoring tools even existed

d) why does Samsung's announcement quoted above stating that the world’s very first readily available HDR material would be release in 2015, contradict themselves if they had previously released 10 movies in the prior year?

e) why do the photographs @ray0414 posted of the content available on the UHD disc look HDR whereas the content available on the UHD Video Pack look like SDR

f) why are people stupid enough to go out and purchase the UHD Blu-rays discs for the titles included on the UHD Video Packs when they could have all 10 for less than $10 bucks per movie

If you (or anyone else) wants to believe the movies on the UHD Video Packs are in fact HDR by all means be my guest but if I see posts saying they are, I will certainly provide them a link to my posts and @ray0414 's pictures so they can be informed.

Have a great day!

When I first plugged in the UHD Video Pack into the SEk-3500U and played the Star Trek Movies, it made me believe the SEK-3500U had wondrously improved my HU, due to these 2 Movies being so much brighter and more detailed. Only after, were questions started to be asked, and assumptions made.

As already asked in another Forum, the 2 NEW versions of the Movies are MUCH improved, with added IMAX, and what ever else they threw into them. Comparisons with the Pack movies, and the newly recently released versions is moot.

I still ask, why the movies and not the documentaries? Most were all 4K upconverts? I have NEVER stated they were HDR, I questioned if they were due to the BL and CT being jacked up, then put back to were the settings were originally when the movie was finished. `Bug', `Glitch', is not scientific explanation, and scientific is what you're calling for. For your scientific curiosity, please find all the Members an explanation besides `bug' or `glitch'.

You're telling Members NOT to do the JS Mod, when it was required for the Amazon HDR, was a disservice to them.
It's either JS Mod, OR, buy a new set. Many Members cannot just go out and do that. The JS Mod was a cheaper alternative than having to go out and buy an EXPENSIVE UHD Blu-ray player, just to get Amazon HDR. Cheaper alternatives are cropping up re other add ons. BUT, at the time, the JS Mod was the only way to go. Remember, some Members are still on the payment plan for their TVs.

The following has been added to the instructions:

DOUBLE WARNING!! - If you need to do a Reset, put your SW Model back to the Original setting, or you risk bricking the set !!! You've been warned!!!!

Now back to the JU7100! Any arguments re my triple calibration? My wife has given it`2' thumbs up!

This one I'll take

Because the UHD pack does not contain DTS Master Audio/Dolby TrueHD, and couldn't pass it to an AVR if it did. Also does not contain commentary tracks or other languages. See, many reasons to still buy the UHD Blu-Ray!

What I would give for an ignore function...... Always suspicious when I just don't know what is right and wrong, better or worse and have to be told what is. And here I was all happy my TV never looked better and I could get at least a little HDR material from Amazon.

Moving right along, a "bug" or "glitch" is most certainly an explanation when coupled with the information provided in my previous posts regarding the UHD Video Packs. Would you like me to use other words to describe it such as a malfunction, a fault, an anomaly, a problem, a hitch, or a hiccup to name a few.

FYI, I was the Director of Financial Systems responsible for Administrative and Financial applications processing transactions in the billions of dollars annually and have an extensive background as a computer programmer. A bug or glitch certainly is a scientific explanation.

If you are looking for the specific answer as to why the movies produced in 2014 are throwing the Backlight and Contrast on the Samsung TVs to their maximum values before the first HDR movies were ever produced in 2015, sorry Charlie, I didn't write Samsung's software so I am done wasting my time trying to make you understand.

P.S. No thank you from you for pointing out on this thread that your HOW TO HACK post was incomplete (and probably still is) and that by your own admission would have had guys bricking their One Connect Boxes and SEK-3500's?

Because the UHD pack does not contain DTS Master Audio/Dolby TrueHD, and couldn't pass it to an AVR if it did. Also does not contain commentary tracks or other languages. See, many reasons to still buy the UHD Blu-Ray!
Also missing the Extra Features, usually lasting longer than the actual movie.
