Desperate to get a back up 3D panel, I am down to 3 choices: Sony 75" Z9D (2016 model still in production but obviously pricey - $6K-$7K); LG OLED 65" G6P ($4K-$5K but pretty much all gone); and lately found a few Samsung UN85JU7100 models left (~$3800).

(Incidentally, LG OLED 77" G6P's are still going for $12K to $15K if you can find them!!)

Since there were none on display, I viewed a newer 82" similar (2016) model on display with a decent image quality (demoing BBC's Planet Earth II 1080p content). That said, this is the thread for the JU7100's. Given the price point and the shear size of 85", this is very tempting over the Sony 75" Z9D. But I have no sense of comparison between the Samsung against the Sony Z9D and LG OLED. Obviously, both Sony and LG models are high end and picture quality is excellent.

How's the 3D picture quality on this set?

I watch lots of film content on Blu-rays. So I am not all that into spectacular "brightness"; I want the cinematic "film" look.

BTW, any notable banding issues?

Would you still consider worth getting the UN85JU7100 (based on your viewing experience) or plunge ahead with the Sony Z9D (more $$$, newer technology, relatively better image Q, still in production, 10" less in size, etc)? I also can't wait for the LG 85" OLED set. Note: Sony's 100" Z9D only costs $60K!!

Any opinion or suggestions is greatly appreciated to help make this decision real soon. Thanks so much!
My JU7100 has a Nit level of about 450 NITS. Just picked up an excellent deal on the KS9800 with a 1560 Nit level. But, no 3D. That's left for the JU7100, and my former HU9000 + SEK-3500U (389 Nits). Both now in wife's viewing area since she's the 3D viewer in the family. (Me, the odd time like with Passengers.) If not wanting 3D, look for the KS9800 deals, because they're being swept up quickly !

Had a yellow stain in the middle of the display. Mostly noticeable on skin tones and grey colored settings.

Contacted Samsung and within a week they set me up with a new panel. Same one as before; IH02, with has no noticeable clouding as a nice extra!

Is vertical banding something that is covered under warranty? It has become quite annoying.

All technical faults are under warranty. They don’t repair things like small amounts of clouding or light bleeding.

But banding should be covered.

My yellow stain was barely noticeable on the Samsung testscreens (in menu) but was unbearable on skin tones and grey screens.
Mechanic made a picture and said the repair was free.

Contact the customer service, they’ll do an online (camera) call and will send in a repair guy. (If the tv is bigger than 48”, at least in Europe)

Thanks to many who commented. I plunged in and just got the UN85JU7100FZA. Very happy with its PQ given its shear SIZE!!!

At first, I was disappointed with PQ while watching blu-ray movies with Sony blu-ray player with 4K upconvert. The image looked like a well-lit video instead of cinematic film. Later, I switched to an LG UP875 and what a world of difference!! The image was film-like - similar to that of my Panny plasma.

I have one more task - find 3D glasses. Per Samsung tech support, only SSG-5100GB and SSG-5150GB were recommended. They both require batteries.

However, I found SSG-3550CR and SSG-3570CR (older models that are rechargeable via USB) on eBay.

Anyone here had used these rechargeable 3D glasses with JU7100? What do you use? Thanks.

Yup! I was rather surprised when my 7100 popped up with a post-update notification.

I dream, that someday, Samsung will actually post a list of enhancements, bug fixes, and security patches, so we can all better understand what is being done to our television.

I suspect this one 'may' be to plug a recent security vulnerability, but there is no way to know for sure.

""RECHARGEABLE"" 3D glasses are the ONLY way to go! I have purchased FIVE new & used ""SSG-3570CR"" USB rechargeable glasses over the last four years off eBay with great, reliable results. This 'Samsung' model has a clip-ON / clip-OFF, "removable" rubber nose bridge that facilitates comfortable use both with & without standard distance glasses!!!!! ReCharging takes a maximum of 30 minutes. Make sure you acquire AT LEAST one USB recharging cable for every TWO pair of glasses.

Lastly, you NEVER can please everyone...especially teenagers. These are light-weight glasses for 'normal' adults...AND by intention, very comfortable even when worn over 2 hours! Clark Kent and indisciplined kids will not 'work' with these glasses. Costly, thicker & heavier alternatives ARE available for those who DON'T normally wear any glasses.

Quick start up question. Every time I turn on my ju7100 it defaults to the "TV" input (which I have none so I see static) and I have to use the remote to switch to "HDMI 4" which is what I run everything through.

Is there anyway to change the start up so I don't have to switch to Source > HDMI 4 each time?

Thanks!

Turn on one of your Input devices first.
No device, defaults to TV. (Try sticking a paper clip, stretched out, into the antenna hole, and do an auto scan for stations. If stations found, will remove the static issue when it defaults to the TV.)

That's exactly correct. If the TV does not see any input being used it will default to the TV. The only input that always has a signal is where my Satellite Receiver is and it always goes to that.

Been awhile since I've used them but the SSG-3300GR is what I have and they worked well. I wore them over a pair of prescription glasses.

Thanks, guys. That is the problem. See, I use a Harmony Elite and had a one button press that powers on the TV, the Marantz and the Oppo. The TV seems to power on first (or faster) then the others so it doesn't see the input from the Oppo and defaults to TV. Not sure if there's much I can do other than start units individually each time.

I had to remove the JS Mod when the Hub would no longer talk to Samsung. Up to this point it was working fine, even with the new FW.
Wife now happy that the 4K Love Nature now installed in the Apps area. (Hence having to fix the Hub issue that suddenly appeared.)

Apparently, Samsung has issued a JU7100 update that enables HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) HDR playback! I have . Sony camera that shoots HLG, and was kicking myself that I had no way to playback my m4v Apple HEVC HDR files...but I changed the extension to mp4, the JU7100 recognized the files on the USB flash drive, and switches to HDR mode and plays back happily.

I tested Apple's Compressor in 4K for Apple Devices HEVC and h264, and both options pass the HLG HDR metadata properly for playback on the JU7100. :-D

Whatever the current version is, 1520 or some such. It may be irrelevant, because the JU7100 will only switch to HDR mode on USB playback, it will not recognize the HLG signal through my HMDI connection from the camera. Also, the HDR "effect" is basically nil on HLG...HLG uses REC709 with extended highlights in log format, but because the JU7100 is 350 nit or so, you basically get the 709 gamma with backlight forced 100%, so it simply looks like REC709 SDR played back with backlight at 100%. May be more of a compatibility update than an actual beneficial upgrade...just to be able to say "2015 TV's are now HLG compatible".

Here is my HLG test clip I just uploaded to YouTube...this clips plays as HDR via my USB flash drive, see how it looks through Chromecast Ultra TY playback.

I may have spoken too soon. It appears that while HLG will play back via HEVC 10 bit files through the USB port, the JU7100 WILL NOT recognize any HLG content that has been uploaded to YouTube, and cannot handle 10 bit h264 HDR files. The only way to get HLG for my clips is to convert them into PQ format, which then throws the HDR flag when playing through Chromecast Ultra to the JU7100. My HLG footage above throws the HDR flag on other devices, just not the JU7100 fed through Chromecast Ultra.

Maybe this will be improved upon in later firmware releases, but for now, unless you bake it yourself and feed it to the TV "on a stick", no HLG.

Since our sets are only quasi-HDR anyway, I'm impressed if they are adding any sort of HLG support. If I can get my hands on a HLG demo file I can test it over my DLNA server. HDR works that way with no issue, either using the internal DLNA app or when I use my Roku Ultra as the player.

But don't forget HLG support by the display is only half the equation. The app/player has to support it as well. That would explain why YouTube doesn't yet trigger HDR with HLG content. Google would have to update their app to support HLG.

ATC, shoot me a message with your email and I will send you a 10 bit HEVC HLG file to play with...only 10 seconds or so, but long enough for the TV to switch into HDR mode. :-)

ALSO...anyone know how to reactivate the capability of pausing and resuming on connected Chromecast devices? I am jacked into HDMI #4 , and have always been able to at least play and pause the content on YouTube or other TV network apps, but I seem to have lost that ability since the last f/w update. :-(

UN60JU7100 Settings Change on their own

My UN60JU7100 backlight and contrast values keep changing to 100 on their own. Even when I change the values back to my calibrated settings, the display still looks different. I'm thinking the display is adapting to the ambient light in the room, but I can't figure out what setting would control this. I have the Eco settings all turned off. Anyone have any ideas? This is driving me crazy.

That's what the set does when it detects HDR material. Is that a possibility? Are you watching 4K material when it happens?

Ah! I do have it hooked up to an Xbox One S, where I have the Xbox setting on 4k. I get that's it. I'm assuming there's no way to change that feature on the TV?

I'm not familiar with the Xbox settings. It might be sending an HDR signal at all times.

If you turn UHD Color off on the HDMI jack on the TV that might stop the HDR processing, but I'm unsure if that might cause issues with SDR 4K material.

Will our JU-7100's ""correctly"" show / play UHD video sourced from an Oppo UDP-203 & HiDef Receiver via HDMI ?

[I am regularly playing back UHD MKV files via the USB port(s) BUT, of course we are stuck at 6ch audio!] {Samsung never licensed beyond 5.1 dts}

Thanks

I consider these sets as quasi-HDR. They don't have the full specs for proper color and brightness for our panels, but with some software updates it does detect and improve the display of HDR material. I have a number of HDR demo files on my DLNA server, and they certainly look much better than non-HDR material. But I don't think they compare to the Samsung SUHD sets, as well as other HDR capable sets from other manufacturers.
