I'm getting a whole home theatre setup installed soon. I'll most likely leave my JS8500 in the box until the installation.
I got a call from the salesman who sold me the TV today. He called to say he forgot to tell me some of these have shipped with a firmware update and some haven't. He said he would send me the link and I could use a flash drive.
Has anyone needed to do a firmware update yet?

Whats blowing my mind is I have a 65ju7100 and a 65ju7100 in my house which I'm playing with and both are excellent.. I like the 7100 better but both are really nice with little or no flashlighting.

Everything im reading from all js owners for not only the 8500 but the 9000 and 9500 tells of issues with flash lighting and clouding.. It's starting to appear to me that their entire suhd line suffers from some issues but offers super bright colors and Pop..

Theres always trade offs and apparently this is one..

As I am in the business I was going to bring home a js8500 to play with but now I'm reluctant after reading so much of this..

I am praying Sonys new C series stuff is going to be awesome but they are not releasing them till may/june

For what it's worth, I had a JU7100 and it was a pretty good set, I exchanged it for a JS9000 hoping for better off axis, but that never happened. I did not notice much performance difference with the OCB, but the SUHD is suppose to support HDR so I'll probably keep the JS9000. It seems that the motion on the J9000 maybe slightly better , can't really tell due to mainly watching Comcast cable and both sets freaked out every now and then on some motions. The JS9000 has better sound too, not sure if the JS8500 has the extra woofers. I'd be curious now to compare them side by side in stores now.

After buying and returning a defective Sony 65" 850b I kind of had my heart set on the upcoming Sony 65" 900c. But I wandered into our local Sears store the other day and they were showing a 55" JS9000 with all brand-new true 4k demo clips. The picture was absolutely fantastic, truly mesmerizing. And now I'm seriously considering the JS8500 flat screen model, but if I may, I'd like to ask some questions about that unit, and about SUHD.

The one caveat regarding the SUHD demos I've witnessed is that they are just naturally set to something like Vivid, for store-display purposes. (As far as I can tell, all TVs are.) The bad side of this is that colors like red, yellow and blue on SUHD models are much too saturated, and are not life-like. Am I correct in assuming that these can be properly adjusted for home viewing while still maintaining their true color shades?

Also, the model I looked at, as I said, was a 55" JS9000. Because the 65" 8500 is ten inches larger and doesn't quite have the specs of the 9000, how close might its picture quality be as compared to what I saw at Sears? BB of course has a 65" 9000 showing the usual 4k demo clips, and they look great (if oversaturated) but I'm curious how the 8500 stacks up in comparison. If its quality is close to what I saw at Sears for the 55" 9000, then it looks like that's the TV for me.

Thanks for all responses.

I think I remember that he was testing a 7100 and a 7500 and perhaps that is what he meant.

If choosing between a 55" js9000 for 3999 or a 65" js8500 for 3999 I would take the js8500 all day. Picture is pretty much the same and 10 inches makes a huge difference. Just my opinion.

Also, you have to take into account the curve vs flat decision. If you don't mind the curve, then it's a moot point. But, for me, it's a deal breaker. Bring on the flat screen!

I don't mind the curve, but it is bogus that the 8500 doesn't have OCB, i.e, no flat screens with OCB.

As my search for my next TV continues, I am disappointed to see the edge lit flashlighting issue here again. I guess we are asking for so much to get a flat TV with decent blacks and no flashlighting. Oh wait, there is the mythical LG flat panel coming...

BTW...are you owners not bothered by the non-black bezel? I don't like it at all and it is another marketing gimmick done at the expense of best video practices.

I owned a C8000 from several years back with the brushed aluminum bezel, and love it! It actually makes the screen pop more having a non-black bezel.

A UN65JS8500 should be arriving on Tuesday so I will be on board soon. Have any of the new owners viewed any native 4K media yet, for instance from Netflix streaming?

Samsung and Sony probably both decided that a chrome bezel was a good way to get the unit's black areas look darker by comparison.

To anyone interested in a Google Chromebox or Chromebook..
Be aware that these boxes run a variant of Linux and DO NOT support HDCP!!!
This means no support for HD on most streaming services. I wish I would have known this beforehand....

Do you know if there is a web site that is like a 4K TV Guide which shows what shows and movies are available in 4K? I think we all would like an easy "one source" to go to in order to find 4K assets.
As time goes on this will be easier. Reminds me of the early days of 720x and 1080x.

I hear that some of the top end SLR cameras can take 4K video with magnificent clarity.

Have any of you tried to project your own 4K media onto the JS8500 yet?

How are you presenting the media? USB thumb drive?

Uh, well I have Amazon Prime and Youtube is free so I've been using those sources. Netflix has some 4k content, and there are other paid apps that have 4k content as well such as MGO, but you have to pay a ridiculous fee per rental.

My phone actually shoots in 4k, but I have yet to test it on my TV.

Day 3 with the new 8500..

Still tweaking and trying different settings. I admit the flash lighting and corners are worse than I would have expected.

As others have said when it's not a black screen the picture and colors are amazing. I'm looking forward to when people start getting these officially calibrated and share their different settings.

I'm returning my 65JS8500.

As I noted in the other JS8500 thread, had issues with uniformity (gray screen test attached), black levels, and freezing of the OS (with latest firmware). Expected better performance for $4K. Unfortunate - as the picture was fantastic otherwise.

What were you using for the Grey level test? I'm curious now how bad mine may be. No freezing or other issues though..

Smart led enabled? Also is that with the backlight maxed out?

Here are some quick 4k color samples from my mac - no pro by any means..just testing diff combos
1)very Dark gray, 2) black bg with white txt, 3) black bg with more txt. 4) credits ...
all with 10 led backlight and toggling smart led and cinema back made no apparent changes I could notice. Phone pictures i would also say make the variations more pronounced.
Definitely not uniform with clouding. Only real time I really notice during regular use is during credits as you can see..
..should I return mine as well?
