My dilemma:

XBR70x850b for $2400 or XBR65x850c for $1800

My highest priority is picture quality and for the life of me, I can't figure out what the real-world differences are between the 850B and 850C.

I love the fact that the 850B is 70" and - based on what I've read - the Android-OS-based 850c still has some bugs (and probably always will). But what I can't figure out is if the new X1 processor in the 850c is worth the potential OS-related frustrations and smaller screen-size. Both for current content and future (e.g., HDR content). Other than the size and the OS, the listed specs between the two are pretty dang close to the same, but marketing brochures and ecommerce comparison options don't get to the real-world performance of these two very similar sets.

So I thought I'd ask for any input here. (Note, I also posting a similar query to the "official" 850b thread to see what they have to say).

Many thanks!

Go for the C. B is IPS panel which has lesser blacks and lower contrast ratio but accurate color. C with VA panel has better blacks and contrast ratios and equally as good color.

EDIT: I think the 70" B might have been a VA panel as well but the smaller versions were IPS. So my advice may not matter.

If go with the C. I owned the 70x850B, got upgraded by Sony to 75x850C.

-Android OS is not a problem, with recent updates it's stable and solid for me, like it and Android apps so much better than the B series OS/apps
-HDR support is nice
-One year newer means more likely to get more updates, better support from Sony

850B is a great TV, you'll like both a lot, but I'd go with the newer model if I was choosing.

At least once a day there is no picture on my Sony 850c but some of the menus still work. It happened today after I watched a video on YouTube. Is this a known bug with this TV?

Not exactly the cheapest option, But I purchased a PS4 controller and it works really good!

Not reported as far as I've seen. You might want to try a full restart (long press on remote power button), and if that doesn't help, a reset, if you're repeatedly having issues like that.I used YouTube without any issues like that.

Yes, 70X850B is VA panel. Great blacks limited viewing angle.

Apologies but total beginner here

Hi all,

Just got myself the 55x850c today and generally I love it. This is the first tv I've had of this quality. I've have been trying to read through a lot of the posts in this thread, but unfortunately a bunch of stuff is going over my head. I was wondering where would be a good place to start to learn just what settings/adjustments I should apply to get all I can from this tv?

One question maybe someone could answer for me if they're not too busy and I manage to explain it correctly....
1) I went to watch YouTube/Netflix but I have no sound. I'm using the Bravia Sync as I have a STR-KS2300. I have it plugged into the hdmi4 slot on the tv as I read on this thread that's the one that uses ARC (not that I had ever heard of it before tonight )
I noticed when I go to the home screen from watching my cable box (the receiver is on SAT because that's where my hdmi from the cable box is plugged in), the receiver switches to TV. I assume that's the problem as I have no cables in the tv output on the receiver (there is no hdmi for tv). If I use the receiver remote and hit SAT, well obviously I get the sound that's coming through my cable box.

See my Sig for picture settings info in 850C calibration spreadsheet.

I don't use Bravia sync/ARC so I'll let someone else help you with that.

I just intalled a new modem and I am getting even faster speeds with speed tests. I get anywhere from 40 Mbps - 80 Mbps using testmy.net on the x850 opera browser. When I try ultraflix I get the same 2-3 Mbps on the TV and my phone.

I have tried Ultraflix app on my phone at 5 locations and it always gets over 20Mbps.

I tried doing the reset and holding in the power button....The power button trick causes it to work, but eventually the TV does it again....mostly after watching a lot of YouTube videos....I always update to the latest firmware too....

My 65" 850C was delivered from BestBy around 40 minutes ago. It has a November 2015 manufacture date. I just started upgrading it. So far I tried 4K Netflix and 4K from my TiVo Bolt. I was going to use a wired connections it but it seems to be doing great over wireless with the internal Netflix App. In only a few seconds it ramps up to the 2160P encodes.

After it finishes upgrading I need to see about mounting it on the TV stand. I just had the BestBuy delivery people install the support stand and place it on top of the TV stand for now.(since they wouldn't wait around for me to install the brackets to help me install. But that wasn't in their scope of work so I really didn't expect them to anyway.)

The TV is light and certainly much less bulky than the two, DLP sets they took away. At some point I'll need to pull out my colorimeter and laptop to calibrate it. But I probably won't get around to that for a few weeks since I'm still in the process of changing the layout for the room the Sony 850C is in as well as another room.

Hello Everyone...
Two more questions regarding the 65X850C
Since the last firmware update.... are there any NEW calibration settings, or are the ones on the spreadsheet still good.
I tried one from the list and the picture seemed dark... but there again... I could have screwed it up because I am a beginner.... I also notice some of the setting cannot be changed unless other settings not changed are made.. and the settings are in different spots, or not there at all

I have purchased a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and installed Opera, another , not knowing what I am doing, it installed.. looks good...
But have to figure out how to install the keyboard and mouse.

OK... one more.. I lied.. I have a Blu ray DVD player... when playing a BluRay, I could not get my Surround sound system to read digital 5.1, I was getting PCM 2.0,, what setting do I have to change to get the 5.1

Thank you for everyones help enjoying this TV

Same for me. Not matter what input I've tried I get that error. I believe someone posted that you have to be using the TV's internal tuner as one of the inputs to use the twin picture mode, but don't remember for sure.

Just to be clear, the Reset is not holding the Power button down on the remote.

- Restart: Long press on power button until set turns off and starts to reboot
- Reset: Go to the Android Settings menu on the SmartTV mode and use the Reset option. Requires going through some or all of TV setup steps again. I haven't done this on an Android TV yet, but on an Android phone a reset returns the device to factory default settings and puts you back into the initial device setup flow. Any FW updates that have been applied are retained. You'll have to sign into your Gmail account on the TV again and any apps you had installed from the Play Store should be automatically reinstalled.

Thank you for the info. I would like to add to make sure you are in the UHD category in the Amazon app. I just found out that you have to go into the UHD category manually and then find the shows, like "Mozart In The Jungle". Make sure it says [Ultra HD] after the title. It turns out I was watching the regular HD version all this time w/o HDR. I didn't verify that until I set HDR as b&w and it didn't work... Now it does.

Apparently, if you just search for the show it will give you the HD version and not the UHD (4k & HDR if applicable) version. It seems they could improve on this.

Hello all, I am a Sony XBR-65X850C owner and I decided to read as much of this thread as I could (I started from the beginning). It took me a couple months. I got my TV on 9/26, which apparently wasn't the best timing with the recent price drops, but I'm quite happy with the Sony. Manufacture date is from April and I got it from BB. It's my 2nd. The first one I got had a cracked screen.

First, I want to thank @DoctorM and @Danabw for their extensive contributions to this board and @ktownhero who doesn't seem as active now and many others.

I haven't been active on AVS Forum for years (and was mostly in the OTA forums in those days), but with my new TV adventures, it seemed to be a good time to get back on board. So, I apologize for being rusty. Let's see if I can figure out the mention tags.

@DoctorM - Thank you for the USB fix. I was very tired of having to scan my thumb drive every time I put it back into the laptop. I reformatted to NTFS and it works!

I do have a little blue edges/blooming/light bleed or whatever you want to call it, which probably doesn't surprise anyone seeing as how I have the 65", but it's very minor and doesn't distract me much. It's pretty mild on the After Earth video, but it does exist. There is also a mild amount of vertical banding.

I had the Vizio M70-C3 briefly before the Sony and I was never happy with it. The colors have much better saturation and viewing angles are much wider on the Sony.

I upgraded from a 5 year old 52" Sony. The extra real-estate has been great.

Just wondering if these sony displays use 10 bit panels as well?

Trying to decide between a 850c sony or a JS8500 samsung.

Two more questions regarding the 65X850C
Since the last firmware update.... are there any NEW calibration settings, or are the ones on the spreadsheet still good.
I tried one from the list and the picture seemed dark... but there again... I could have screwed it up because I am a beginner.... I also notice some of the setting cannot be changed unless other settings not changed are made.. and the settings are in different spots, or not there at all.

<snip>
The picture settings in the spreadsheet are in the exact order as they appear on the Picture settings menus...if you start at the top of the spreadsheet in any of the columns and you can move through the settings and apply them in order on the TV. Some settings are duplicated in the menus, for example, the Color setting is on the top level picture settings menu, and also repeated in the detailed color settings menu.

Let me know if you find otherwise.

Regarding your other question - do calibration settings need update after the most recent FW update? Could be, since apparently Sony made some changes to the picture processing and that can change the impact of the recommended picture settings.

Regarding the picture looking darker after the settings, that's normal. The default screen settings tend to be too bright/too blue (since that looks better in a showroom). Once you adjust screen settings to "normal" it's going to look darker. See the updated version of the X850C Calibration spreadsheet (link in my sig below) for more info on this issue. I've added a general FAQ tab that has info and links to more information on you question about things being darker after trying the settings in the spreadsheet.

Great reminder about that, but sorry, but it's even more complicated.

So you not only have to make sure it's marked UHD, you also need to make sure it's marked HDR. Amazon has content that is both UHD (4K) only, and UHD and HDR (4K plus HDR encoded).

And to make it worse, they don't show if content is HDR on the browsing screens:

1. For movies: HDR is indicated only on the movie details page (displayed when you select the movie to view details and/or play it). HDR info doesn't show up in the information that displays when on the browsing screen where you scroll through movie/series posters, where you would expect it should.

2. For series: On the individual episode info screen. You have select an individual episode to see its details page, to see whether it is HDR or not. For example, in Mozart in the Jungle, the series title page only shows "[Ultra HD] in the series title. That does not mean HDR, just means 4K. You have to access an individual episode page to find the "HDR" box next to the other items (MPAA rating, audio type, closed captions, release yer, and genre) that display below the star rating.

So since not all UHD/4K content in the UHD section is HDR, check the details to be sure.

Is there a limit on what size file can be played through USB device? The TV was able to detect and play a < 2GB MKV file but was not able to detect a ~ 15 GB file.

Nvm...it just took a really long time to detect the bigger file lol

X850C calibration spreadsheet updated w/overall "FAQ for the FAQ" tab that includes info on "I tried the custom settings in the spreadsheet and now my TV picture is darker" questions, and more/better info on HDR.

Also Virtualrain's newest settings and of course link to his post explaining all of the settings.

I had ordered a couple more pairs of the XPAND X105BT glasses that I use with my Mitsubishi set. For $19 each they were a good deal. I've opened one of them and it paired without issue to my 850C.

The 850C seems to be working well with the Sony HTNT3 Speaker bar. I got for 50% off with the TV. I've been getting DD using ARC from the builtin apps, and the bar has had no issues with 7.1 DTS-HD and Dolby True HD. As well as being HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliant. So it has worked with my TiVo Bolt and it's 4K apps.

I also had no issue putting the TV on the TV stand mounting bracket. I just had to lift the TV up a foot or so to place it on the support. I just lifted from the middle. Fortunately the TV is rather light.

The TV stand bracket tilts up and down and swivels side to side. It was a little expensive at $300 from Amazon, but I think it was well worth it. Since it is a very solid stand. And was easy to put together myself.
Here is the stand I got from Amazon.

Picked up my new TV last night from best buy. Got it home unboxed it, hung it up on the wall and plugged it all in and fired her up. Did the update and it downloaded and installed, once it installed the TV turned off and won't turn back on. I unplugged it for an hour and it turned back on to a black sony screen and turned off....hasn't turned back on...FML. Looks like I have some troubleshooting to do.

Other than that this TV is awesome!
