I cannot compare honestly between the two models as I never owned a Samsung TV...

Steve, can you pist pics of the advanced settings of the 850C? I am interested in seeing how if Sony included a CMS (Color Management System), 2-pt/10-pt white balance adjustments and how they are handling gamma. Would be great if BT.1886 option was included but I doubt it, since Sony usually has gamma as a slider from -3 to +3.

I would really appreciate it, buddy!

Salut Steve, thanks for the review.
I'm about to pull the trigger for a XBR55x850C to replace my defunct KD-34XS955 after 10 years of service.

Next buy it's a new AVR to replace my Denon AVR-5600.
I like to keep my gear until they died.

Steve the Geek - in your (excellent) blog review you mention a media player was included with the TV... Please can you provide more detail about this?

Thanks for the comments on the review, it's appreciated. It's only a past time on my side, so it's nice to see if it helps people !

The media player included is called Video, I don't know if it's provided stock with the Android TV OS or it's made by Sony, I haven't try a Nexus Player so I cannot confirm. There's also one for Music and one for Photos.

Right now it works well and seem to play the same set of formats as last year's model. But I did not have success on DLNA with it yet, only on local USB storage.

All my settings are still factory default right now. I don't know hot to tackle this. The TV is in the living room so it's used in very varied lightning situations so I would at least 2-3 different configurations.

The other thing is all those enhancement for blacks, colors, etc... I used to disable all image processing on my previous sets, now I don't really know how I should do this...

I used to be the one helping calibrating (nothing professional of course, just with THX Optimode and similar tools) for friends, and now I'm really wondering how to do mine...

Outstanding, Steve! Seems like Sony finally has given us 2-pt AND 10-pt white balance adjustments!!!!! You can tell I'm excited, right? Hahahaha Only thing I don't see is a CMS for fine tuning colors.

Can you see what the Color Space adjustment does? Will it open a sub-menu or is it just a dropdown list? If CUSTOM is an option in Color Space, then it should allow for color adjustments. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one!

I can see the excitement

The choices for Color space are Auto, sRGB/BT.709 and BT.2020. No custom sadly.

No biggie, I can deal with that. Too bad Sony doesn't give us that flexibility but hey, at least they gave us 2/10-pt WB controls. Thanks for helping me with this, buddy!

How are black levels so far? Any chance to play some dark material in very low light situations?

BTW, that black level slider which you currently have set at 50, is that a backlight adjustment just renamed to black level?

I'm pretty impressed by the black levels, even more by the lack of clouding though, it was really bad on the 850B. I did watch dark scenes at night ans I was pretty happy with the result.

Not sur about the slider for black level, it doesn't seem like a backlight configuration when I change the value, but hard to tell honestly.

Mastered in 4K should be set to on when you play on the dozen of Mastered in 4K Blu-ray discs produced by Sony.

Resolution is linked to the Reality Creation setting. This seems to have to do with the upscaling or at least detail management.

It's incredible how much complex in term of settings those set are getting and how complicated it seems to just get a straight untouched picture to respect source material. Maybe it's just me getting old!

I got my 65X850C yesterday and have it setup now. Picture quality looks really good out of the box. I upgraded from a very old Sharp Aquos from about 10 years ago, so it's a night and day difference.

As such, I'm completely lost as far as calibrations or PQ compared to other 4K TVs. I mostly game but the youtube 4K videos etc have shown some very nice fidelity on the tv right out of the box.

I messed around a bit with monitor delay, and it looks like game mode is ~20-~30ms lag, but I'm also having the TV do audio processing as well. Would be nice to have access to better diagnostic equipment rather than feel though...

Seems about the same lag I sense on my 65w850c, I am betting these two sets have nearly identical lag. I estimate 28-32ms based on observation. Love my set; seems the panels are similar just different processing and obviously 4k vs 1080p, enjoy yours!

Yeah, I first really noticed it when playing Bayonetta on the Wii U because the controller puts out the same sound but without the processing delay. In Standard viewing mode the delay is close to 0.5 second, and is painfully noticeable. It's still there in game mode (Without disabling anything in the system menu) but it was closer to 0.2s off with only slightly loss in visual quality (720p source).

I tested a bit and tweaked it more with Hatsune Mike Diva F and that's what I used to try and narrow it down some. I hope an external sound system will help alleviate more of the separation.

Outside of those two instances though, I haven't really felt the lag, so that's been nice. And even my N64 games were surprisingly decent looking, all things considered.

I don't have cable, but when I saw the TV on display at Best Buy, the cable that they did have looked quite bad. I'm guessing it was the signal itself.

I could probably throw up some Hobbit pics or something, if you've got something in mind.

I would love to see scaling of video games in game mode. Still pictures would be fine for me.

I tested a bit and tweaked it more with Hatsune Mike Diva F and that's what I used to try and narrow it down some. I hope an external sound system will help alleviate more of the separation.

Outside of those two instances though, I haven't really felt the lag, so that's been nice. And even my N64 games were surprisingly decent looking, all things considered.
i'm not sure that an external sound source will change the input lag because HDMI is transmitting the same signal either way, but it's a good thought… I game on a Samsung pn58c8000 and in Pc mode it has 16 ms lag, the new Sonys seem to have more. I know some companies have improved lag with a firmware update so that's also possible that Sony could tweak it that way . it's by no means bad, I just think it could be improved.

A new finding is it PS3 games seems to lag less than PS4 games? I had the two units right next to the television and I'm wondering if there's interference because the PS3 plays with less lag, I would think it would be the other way around… I know the ps4 Bluetooth is on the same signal as wifi and could be interfering; strange. I am going to move the ps4 from right next to the tv to three feet away and see.
