1.) Would I see any benefits from adding this evo kit?
yes you will!

2.) How can I tell if my panel can do 10bit and HDR etc?
Your panel is Samsung made and 10 bits, you can test with a computer.

3.) Are there any other owners on here with my same configuration that can comment on pros, cons, and caveats?
Do not have your TV but users have all reported great results with 8550 I have 8700

4.) Any remaining preferred sources for purchasing this kit? Reviews are all over the place across the web like Best Buy, Amazon, Samsung Store, etc...
Get where u can looks like they might stop making until next year
I really appreciate the assistance. Thanks in advance.
Great way to enjoy HDR without getting a new set jump in!

I just purchased mine from Newegg. It was $10 cheaper than MSRP and they have it in stock.

To answer your Q about the kit, I have a HU8550 (the 50" version) and am very happy with the jump in quality!

I have the same tv and panel. It is 10 bit and HDR capable. The added benefits include upgraded hdmi ports, tizen interface, faster processor, better picture.

The SEK-3500 is definitely worth the $400 for this $10,000 tv that we have. The issue that I have is if the uhd 8500 player without 3D worth the extra $400 just to be able to play HDR overpriced movies that I already own in blu Ray and would have to buy just to play in HDR.

1) hell yes. It was a bigger jump over 4K than 4k was over 1080p.
I have never heard of someone bricking their set by just adding the sek3500.
As much as you paid for your TV how could you not, given that you will likely NOT upgrade next year.

2) It should be a 10 bit panel. But quite a few un65hu8550's are 8 bit. Your panel wont do HDR on amazon without the hack or as I call it "crack". But with the sek3500 you will be able to get some kinda hdr on the 4k bluray if it doesnt have a panel restriction like the amazon site requiring the "crack"

3) I dont have your size tv

4) I bought my sek at the actual samsung web site but had to pay sales tax that you might not necessarily need to pay on other sites. Plus the added comfort that your unit wont be a refurb or return.
Plus I got mine in 2 days last week.

We don't know yet because they won't be streaming the new HDR content until 3/14.

I was confused by his comment but I think he means is it worth it seeing as UHD Bluray doesn't come with the 3D version of the movie.

Its when you go into the service menu and brainwash your panel into subliminally thinking its a suhd model thus fooling amazon prime to allow streaming hdr movies to a panel it was not designed to display. Its also for people in denial that they bought their panel a year too soon and it is not financially viable to upgrade yet. This workaround will be moot as more of us will get hdr on the new bluray with just the sek3500 needed for hdmi 2.0a.

Hey, I resemble that remark! LOL

I'm kind of afraid of going into secret menus and tooling around because I know just enough to get myself in trouble. :P

Sorry for the noob question, but what is the JS9000 settings/emulation I see people discussing? Is it like a kind of hack for the HU sets? Thanks.

Did you or anyone else try if HDR on UBD-K8500 works with SEK-3500 in standard HU mode as well?

I haven't tried yet. Got the player connected while in JS mode and so far very happy with the quality of hdr. May be sometime for testing will revert back.

You can be in HU mode and the K8500 will work fine. JS mode doesn't add anything to make HDR work with the SEK-3500 its already in there.

Yes I realise that, however I wasn't sure if Netflix had provided any documentation on this yet. I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

Hi,

I have a 65" HU9000 and the SEK3500. I've had both for a year but I've had serious problems with the SEK3500. It has problems connecting and staying connected to my homes wifi even though the 10+ other devices have no issues.

The second issue is how it interacts with my Denon 1712 receiver. I've turned on anyconnect to allow for ARC over HDMI 4. Whenever I use my Harmony hub remote to turn on my cable box setting(turns tv on, turns cable box on, sets tv to hdmi 4, sets receiver to cable HDMI, etc) everything comes on and I can watch TV. Typically 5 seconds after the harmony remote is done sending out commands, the 3500 box tells my receiver to change its input from cable to TV input. No idea why it does this but it happens on every receiver input. Very annoying!!!

At this point, I'm willing to reset my sek3500 back to factory settings. My thinking is that I got the 3500 on launch day and I've been upgrading th firmware since. Maybe a reset is required for some of the patched bugs to go away? How can I reset the 3500? If I have to do it through the service menu, how can I access the service menu?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

It's the Denon! Go into your AVR's setup menu. There's an option under audio that will change it to TV Audio automatically. I had that and it's very frustrating. Turn that off and you should be ok. Can't give you exact menu sequence until after the race.

Found it!
That's under Video and hdmi settings.

Everything I have read on HDR Netflix will have HDR10 but I'm in JS mode and of you go into Netflix app settings my set shows as a JS9000 and I did read that they will provide HDR content to JS8500 and up. So I'll test with JS mode when Dare Devil gets added.
I think there going to do the same thing Amazon did as the app shows your TV.
Time will tell.

Thank you for any help you can provide.
Check to make sure the model of your set is correct in the contact Samsung tab of the menu. If not the upgrade to sek-3500 may have changed the model of wifi in the service menu. I don't know what the correct model is for your set, someone else can chime in

There's a DNS "hack" that's worked for many including myself. Check your IP settings. Mine are set to auto. I believe someone mentioned trying 8.8.8.8. Or the DNS settings for Samsung. However lately when I've had a problem, resetting the smart hub fixed it. Yeah, you'll have to re-enter Netflix, Amazon, Samsung, etc passwords. But no real big deal.

If there's no new Evo OCB this year, does this mean the HU, JS and KS are now going to share a same FW update, and if so, do we now watch for the KS FW updates?
