Hi all!
I keep reading people want more nits (I would prefer the substitute t with the n, but how many would be enough? [my deepest apologies for those offended]), at what nit point would we need sunglasses to view our TV's?

Just a thought.

!!!Happy New Year!!!

Yes it is 10 bits.

Yup I got a big update got a Ks8000.... Almost got oled B6(for main TV) but will wait till CES and see what Samsung brings with QLED. Gotta say after playing around with Ks for days Sek has WCG and does HDR great. The KS is much brighter and has a higher colour gamut. Can't lie though the colours on Ks pop like crazy. We really have 10 bit panel and great HDR with sek and for last few years. Now the time has come for me to go 5000 nits so 2017 is upgrade year for this tele.

player002, how much longer do you think we will get the 8 or 10 bit question? lol

I was thinking about all the discussions we had and that whole dispute with Scott way back. After getting the LG OLED that has a 10bit panel, comparing it with the HU9000, there is no visible difference in what you would see if were not a 10 bit panel.

Remember all the disputes, and the calls to Samsung and that parts outlet to change the panel part number from 10 bit to 8 bit lol.

Now that I think about it again, if the panel were 8 bit, it would be really noticeable.

As long as people buy SEK we will get the question lmao.
Yup Scott should never have listened to that guy. That guy who is now banned
The first thing I did was play same content and then compared.
Ya if it was 8 bit would be very obvious plus we would have had crazy banding.

Truth is HU Tv's were built solid I think more so than new ones..
The dimming is way better on My sek than Ks not even close. The Ks gets way more brighter so this maybe why I see worse dimming that and leds being on all edges. I ordered a bias light that should negate that.

Lol also other members who said JS destroyed HU.. Nope for HDR they are very close. Yes Js and especially Ks have better HDR and colours. However You will not look @ the sek and say it's hdr is garbage or colours are Rec 709 💯

Samsung is hoping, all these sets will just gradually die away, and Members will buy new. (At least that's what they're hoping!) LOL!
They sort of messed up this train of thought when they removed the 3D!

I took your comment for HDMI 1 settings plus HDR to mean STB settings (cable/satellite TV), with further settings for an HDR device. If that's the case, why do you provide both standard and movie settings?

This will soon (Tuesday) become my second TV (HU9000+SEK3500), so I won't be adding an HDR device, so should I still use these settings for normal ATV/Satellite/Cable viewing?

If I have misunderstood in my earlier post, would someone mind providing calibrated or best known settings for this combo for HD (ATV/Netflix/Cable) viewing?

Although I've had my HU9000 for 2 years, I've only just begun looking into various settings which prompted me to buy the SEK. Now I've got the 940d incoming, I'll move this to the bedroom. It'd be great to have it running at its optimal settings, even if only for non HDR / native 4K viewing.

Settings are for Normal viewing on HDMI 1

Since I have my K8500 for 4K Ultra BD playback plugged into it, I also calibrated the HDR settings as well. HDR settings can ONLY be installed when an HDR video is playing. (Separate settings for HDR Mode - 2 Point Only)
Movie for us regular viewers.
Standard settings are for those who fully believe, this is the only Mode to use.

UPDATE!! Sat down fired up the ROKU last night to watch a little GOT on HBO NOW and BOOM, I was now getting DD. Had made no SEK or ROKU FW or settings changes since I last watched it before Christmas. Guess Santa reads this thread and did me a solid. Glad I was a good boy all year long as far as he knows.

I use the same settings as everything else. AMP on custom, both bars at 6. Setting either higher results in artifacts that I don't like. At 6 artifacts are rarely visible.

Thanks, though i'm still a little confused.

How are you running 'normal viewing' devices on HDMI as well as your UHD device? Via an AVR/ARC?

My setup involves;

HDMI 1 - ARC to my AVR which includes ATV4, Saellite TV box
HDMI 2 - PS4 Pro

I set it up this way in order to have HDMI color enabled on HDMI 2 for the PS4 Pro as well as Game Mode.

With no devices UHD on HDMI through my AVR, I have HDMI color disabled on HDMI 1.

With that additional detail, could you please confirm for me if I should still run your Standard/Movie settings (I configured both), on HDMI 1?

All my normal viewing devices are plugged into a Lumagen Radiance XS-3D, then into HDMI 4 at 4.4.4. HDMI 1 is only for my K8500, and switched to when using the Samsung UHD Video Pack.

Unfortunately I disagree. Now that Samsung has that new platform and OCB hub for the 2016 sets, I don't think we will ever see a SEK-4500. I'm pretty certain that all of Samsung's efforts are going to be devoted to their new hub. It doesn't make any sense to keep developing for the 3500. My guess is that we might see some updates if they are portable to the 3500 but that's about it.

And it's 2017 and we didn't get the BIG UPDATE, What Happened?

I can't buy a new tv every 3 years.

Samsung has said that it would release the biggest update by December. he changed his mind?

Samsung is going to be devoted to Their new hub. ok
But I'm not obligated to purchase Samsung.

To get even, forget the hype of this year's, and next year's new models, stick with you old set until the Beta 8K sets come out in 2019, and final versions in 2020. Pretty well everyone should be able to get 5 years minimum out of their sets.

Quote from Flat Panels as to WHY higher Nit sets will be few and far between except for Studio Monitors: Energy level caps!
Unless a newer technology comes along that will give brighter, for less watts - 4000 to 10000 nit sets will be an unobtainable object. PS. Energy Level caps will continue to get more stringent. (Early startup of the energy caps, killed the plasma.)

Is anyone else having issues with ARC? I searched and see it mentioned here and there but nothing definitive. The issue I'm having now is that with SEK seems to reset itself to PCM frequently.

I'm trying to use ARC bitstream for 5.1 from apps on the SEK and pass-through from my xb1s. I gave up on the pass-through and do optical from xb1s to my receiver and it's problem half-solved for now (until the big xb1s audio update...). Even still, OTA and app 5.1 audio gets reset to PCM on the SEK whereas before the SEK my HU was smart enough to switch to PCM for stereo content and automatically go back to DD. Haven't tried optical instead of ARC yet.

<<<<< patiently waiting to install my SEK-3500 but apparently everyone "needs" to watch tv when I have the time to actually do it Hey guys...why not watch the tv in the basement, it's bigger and better (even have the exact same sofa)? Nope, too cold and this is coming from someone who has permanent hot flashes, lol. Serious question now that I am done my rant. Anyone know how to register the SEK-3500 with / on Samsung Canada? It is not listed when you go through the register a product process...just the 2500 is listed. Had the same issue in the past with the M-7 speaker system and a call to Samsung couldn't help me out, and that was purchased at Best Buy Canada. I usually take a product protection plan at the $400 mark but didn't since I purchased from Amazon.com (can be issues on the US / CAN thing) and would like some peace of mind with a registered product. Any other Canadians here have any ideas. OK, anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

Oh yeah...now planning on a 3 am install...D'OH!

And here I am about to ask a question that may have been covered already in this thread. Little bit of background first though. Had my UN60HU8550 professionally calibrated (got it for free on a promotion when I bought) with day / night settings added on all ports with overhead LED lighting (40W equivalent). I have since moved to the tv in to the living room which as Table top LED lighting and I have played a bit with the day / night settings a bit to accommodate the different lighting...no complaints there as all seems good. I have a 2 year Best Buy plan (can opt out after 10 months no penalty) that covers 2 in home visits for any reason including calibration(s) on any tv and doesn't affect the product protection plans that I have. The calibration covers up to 4 separate inputs / settings. I will get the new KS8000 done now that it is broken in (especially day / night for UBD-K8500 and I have a Bell 4K whole Home PVR) but now that I am installing a SEK-3500 and a UBD-K8500 on the HU8550 should I get the 8550 re-calibrated or try a service menu thing to add the day / night and copy my current settings? I am leaning towards getting it done since they now cover 4 ports / settings which they didn't when I first had it calibrated (would love a 3D day / night calibration since I haven't gotten it very good myself, not that it is horrible or anything). Both tv's have a product protection plans that are current so I am covered on anything technical / hardware wise. I have probably answered my own question but any thoughts would be appreciated Thanks.

Scott

Samsung Canada, being they're normal cantankerous selves, have deemed the SEK-3500U an accessory, and being so, cannot be registered. (In fact, most support people may not even know what you're talking about!)
Being it was purchased outside the country - do NOT even ask about warranty!
