@department76 , I posted my findings on this Contrast issue on the previous page, although it sounds like it might/should be fixed in the next firmware, which I'm waiting for it to either be "pushed", or available for download on the US site.

Some Members have gotten a newer FW pushed to their sets, but seems to be a hodge podge of who gets what.
NA Samsung sites are now 4 FWs back. (Note: Korean site FW updates are good for NA, Korea, and a few other countries. Check first.)
Haven't heard of anyone having issues with the Korean site updates. I've been using them for several years without incident.

All equipment other than the TV is in a media closet and connected to TV using a single HDMI and optical cable running to the TV (cannot run IR cable to TV now). HDMI-CEC enabled on receiver and TV.

I can turn on and control everything using the Harmony remote (without line of sight) or Harmony app with an exception of the TV. The problem is that when the receiver turns on, it doesn't turn on the TV which means I have to point the Harmony remote to the TV every time I start the activity, which is really annoying! Since I don't have to use the TV controls (change HDMI input or control volume) after it turns on, I just need the TV turned on with receiver. This issue is keeping me from having a truly smart system (including turning whole system on with voice via Alexa). I have tried detecting receiver thru TV's AnyNet+ option and it does detect it going to 100% on progress bar but then saying no devices found. Can someone offer any suggestions to make the TV turn on when receiver turns on? It will be a huge help! Thanks much.
Anyone? Please?

Agreed! The blacks are so inky after all these updates that my set has developed a black hole at its center! I have to be careful that I'm not sucked in when the TV's turned on.

Weird!

Two ratings of the MU9000, and each show a different OCB, but the one rating says the OCB is upgradeable for the future. Is there something Samsung is not telling us? Is this the so called SEK-4500, but not designed for older TVs?

https://reviews.lcdtvbuyingguide.com...ng-mu9000.html

Appearance and Design
The Samsung 9-series black frame is very attractive and I like the stand and design better than the MU8000 series. There is also a nice clutter free cable routing solution that goes out the rear of the stand. The charcoal color stand and frame I like a lot – beautiful look. The MU9000 is only 1.8” in depth. The included One Connect box also keeps your cables nice and tidy. It can also be upgraded later in the future if needed, without having to replace the whole TV.

Hey guys,

Wow 22275 comments in this thread!

HU8550 65" owner here.

Recently bought a SEK-3500 unit and upgraded it to 1502.1 firmware.

I'm noticing with the SEK-3500 viewing angle is diminished substantially and am seeing what I might be mistakenly call macro blocking in dark scenes (distortions in black/dark areas) depending on the viewing angle. After seeing @galonzo I am wondering if my contrast (which like he indicated has always been in the 90s) is too high, but then I suspect the TV will be too dim by lowering it.

Anyone have suggestions on stuff I could try other than a professional calibration?

I see a few folks mentioning Calman Enthusiast and i1display pro...what's the ramp up for someone to use that kit to calibrate a device?

The calibration disks (e.g., Spears and Munsil 2nd edition--https://www.amazon.com/Spears-Munsil-Benchmark-Calibration-Disc/dp/B00CKWI13O) are fine for setting contrast and brightness.

Some P3 sweeps and color checker for UN55HU6950 w/SEK-3500 unmodded and with JS mod. The only HDR calibration I did was to set 2 point with Masciola HDR patterns.

Have found with the addition of the SEK-3500U plus FW updates, viewing angles improved. But then again, I'm the only one watching my set, and of course, in the sweet spot. Did notice as I leave the room, I do have color at a further angle than previously.

Thanks. This confirms that although these sets can decode the HDR metadata via the sek-3500, they are no where near capable of producing the expanded P3 color gamut. It also looks like the peak luminance was around 340 nits.

So did you happen to do the same with your js8500 for comparison?

And to add^^^ @smithre4 , I believe you are referring to the poster which I quoted, as I didn't mention a specific Contrast value. Maybe re-read the posts, and you'll find that I linked to my previous post, which has the solution

4K Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: First Look

For those of you who are anxiously waiting for it (like I am )...

Here is an early "first look" of it by >Michael S. Palmer (highdefdigest.com)<

It will be available on "4K Ultra HD Blu-ray" and a "4K/3D Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook" on August 22nd.

"Guardians Vol. 2" is actually Disney's first 4K disc.

Quote:
Make no mistake, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray DESTROYS the Blu-ray in every possible way... I'm not kidding or exaggerating. No hyperbole whatsoever. The difference is visible and dramatic...

The Blu-ray is like watching the movie with sunglasses on, where as the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is like watching after you've had laser eye surgery.

...unless there are serious flaws hiding somewhere, Guardians Vol. 2 is probably going to set a new standard as the best, demo-worthy 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray the young format has ever seen... this movie looks bolder, brighter, and more colorful than "Pacific Rim" and "The Great Gatsby".

If anyone is interested or knows someone interested, I just placed my DVDO Iscan Mini up for sale on the Forum's Classifieds. Hope posting this isn't some kind of forum rules violation. If so let me know and I'll delete it.

Thanks

HI,

I just connect my Connect Box to my HU8550 TV. Everything works great except for I can't switch TV to HDMI 4 using Harmony Remote (All other HDMI ports are working fine), I have to go to Source and then I can choose HDMI 4. Does anyone have similar problem like that and what's the possible fix.

Thanks

You CAN NOT pick HDMI4 from Harmony. I have same issue and found out that Harmony won't do it at all. I just moved my HDMI cable to 3. Luckily my receiver is HDMI 2.2 so I only needed 2 HDMI's total. I was wanting to use HDMI4 on TV because it is ARC, so I used the optic from TV to receiver for sound (OTA antenna) instead of the ARC on HDMI4. I wasn't happy at the time, but now I really don't notice any difference and got past the issue with the optic into my receiver.

There is a "fix".

Harmony has a macro which is automatically installed when you setup a Samsung display that can't directly address HDMI 4. I previously used it on my JS9500. One requirement for it to function is that you have an active input into HDMI 3. I connected my directv HDMI input into HDMI 3 on the OCB because I never turn off the HR44 (the directv input is also a good source because it doesn't exceed dolby digital sound and therefore isn't degraded by using ARC for input to the receiver). Then when you try to go directly to HDMI 4, the macro automatically goes to source HDMI 3 and then up to HDMI 4.

It may be difficult to understand my above explanation; but it does work.
