I heard a little rumor from a UK birdie that 1520 added HLG support to European sets. Can anyone confirm? I'm trying to get clarification from Samsung's NJ support team.

(The SEK-1000 was released in 2013 and the SEK-2000/ZA was released in 2014).

My 2012 Samsung ES7500 was upgraded by first the SEK-1000 in 2013 and the SEK-2000 in 2014. Shortly thereafter it died and was deemed not repairable by Squaretrade who sent me a check for my original purchase price which paid for my first Samsung UHD TV and brought me to this thread.
Ahh, thanks for the clarification. I see Samsung continues to advertise the SEK-3000 on their website.

Maybe the reason the guy allegedly received a buy-back [which I believe is true since there is really no reason I can think of to make up a story like that] is because on Samsung's website they provide the following Product Description...

Quote:
Update your Compatible Samsung Smart TV with new Smart Technology. Compatible with select Full HD TVs from 2013 and 2014 (2013: LED F9000/8000/7000; 2014: LED H8000)
...so since the F8500 is nowhere to be seen maybe Samsung was so confused and didn't realize they had an Evo Kit compatible with his TV and did the buy-back.

Not unlike the SEK-3500 which is advertised on the USA website as follows...

Quote:
Upgrade select 2013, 2014 and 2015 Samsung UHD TVs to the latest hardware and software
...however when you click on the hyperlink to See All Compatible Products the only product that appears is the 105" S9 advertised for $149,999.99

And if you really want to see what a sad state of affairs it is I have included a thumbnail below of what Samsung Canada lists on their website of Compatible Products with the SEK-3500. Crazy that neither the USA or Canada websites lists the HU series which is responsible for the majority of their Evo Kit sales!

The other thing we need to keep in mind is that Samsung, in particular, is having a lot of problems with their QLED TVs in that they are not selling as expected and the PQ is not doing well compared to the competition which is consuming them, so maintaining their older sets is probably not a high priority. Also about the line in their letter about hardware improvement not being needed, i think that after a while, the panel becomes the limiting issue regardless of the electronics driving it. Who knows? In retrospect, the 3500 got HDR and HDMI 2.0a and all kinds of PQ improvements on a well built set with great PQ so it was probably money well spent on the device.
Due to Samsung dropping from 53% of the Elite TV class to 13%, and QLED NOT taking some of the losses back, they've now embarked on going 8K at CES 2018. No more `upgrade' problems, because our panels will definitely not go there. Will 8K be their savior? (Or will OLED soon follow suite?)

Personally, my HU9000 + SEK-3500U + FW updates PQ is great by me currently.

@poppagene , Just wonder where you got that "fake news" thought?

Whenever I suspect validity of a statement (sure is a lot of fake news seen), I just Google it and:

Didn't mention fake in top ten responses. Fake statements are found this way.

Thank you for your clarification. My knowledge of Samsung is fairly recent (2014+) and I knew about their SEK-2500 but not the ones you had.

@Musician did post a good explanation to tie them up and I agree with @p5browne 's post.

Without any desire for "buyback" (except perhaps by SquareTrade if needed) the story I referenced was only a passing interest. For no determining reason I thought those stories came from the UK.

Different countries certainly have a wide variety of consumer protection and within the US, look at the states "Lemon Laws". Florida considers Warranty Extensions to be Insurance (true) and regulates them accordingly.

Perhaps no where else (than USA) enjoys such an encompassing Legal Profession and the only motivation for "Class Actions" is their 'Contingency Fee System' which I believe is prohibited in the UK (Canada?). I know that the UK does have strong protection for merchantable quality.

It seems that most of the buybacks in the USA came about as a result of a Better Business Bureau published complaint. It's a shame to see that 'reputation' so carefully guarded, suffer so.

Angry Black Screen after 3 weeks of Evolution SEK-3500 kit

I originally posted to the OFFICIAL Samsung 4k HU8550 and HU9000 forum. It was suggested I post here. Thanks!

I have been reading this forum for a couple of months as I have a HU9000 65" TV. I just recently bought a SEK-3500 and the upgrade process went smooth. I have enjoyed Youtube and Amazon again. I went to turn the TV on last night, and all I get is a black screen. I can see the Red power indicator and also the white LED over the Samsung emblem, and that is all. I have powered cycled the TV, and disconnected the SEK-3500. I have tried another outlet, disconnected all sources, changed the SEK-3500 cable, and nothing. When I do disconnect the SEK-3500, I do get the large icon on the screen that tells me to re-connect. I am hoping this means that the screen is still ok?

I called Samsung tonight, and the 1st tier support was no help. Supposedly there will be someone from product support calling me at some time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I still have the 2500, but I believe I read somewhere that you can't go back??

Thanks for any and all help!

Kipp

You can put the 2500 back on. I’ve put my 2500 back on several times to do firmware updates on the 2500 and re-installed the 3500 with no issues.

Make dang sure when switching OCBs and cables, in and out, power is turned off, the plug pulled from the wall, the ON button pushed on the remote, and wait until Red indicator stops flashing - usually anywhere from 3 to 7 flashes, before moving to the next step.

So similar to when I installed the 3500. When I re-install the 2500, do I just kind of follow all the same steps that I did for the 3500?

Thanks Everyone for the Tips! I'm pretty sure it is just the 3500 box, not sure what went wrong with it, but I have already received an RMA from CDW.

Unfortunately, still a black screen, and all I see is the standby light on constantly, and it just keeps cycling through the flashing red light 5 times. Then solid, and then I can hear it cycle and it goes through the flashing red light sequence again. It just keeps doing this over and over. Time to bring the Samsung TV from the Bedroom to the Living room?

Leave unplugged overnight.
You may at one point, have forgotten to do the shut down procedures. Very important if in a carpeted area.

I did hear back from DirecTV a few days ago in regards to HLG on the SEK 3500U and my 2016 4K Samsung sets. So far only select 2016 Samsung TVs have the firmware update to support HLG HDR in HDR mode. It sounds like every effort was made to get Samsung to support HLG but they have been slow on this due to business reasons on their side basically saying feel free to call Samsung and complain :-). As expected the content should still, however, be viewable as 4K-SDR. If you have the UHD Deep Color setting turned on for the HDMI port on the TV, then you should, also be receiving the wider BT. 2020 colorspace and associated wider color gamut correctly, which provides a significant improvement over the Rec. 709 colorspace available in HD SDR. The HDR capability test on the color test menu only tests for HDR10 support wich will be coming for VOD titles in the future.

Well no go! But I did discover that I have a an extended warranty that is still good! So since I don't think they will be able to replace it with the same TV, I now have to figure out what I want for a replacement!!

Good that you have that RMA for the SEK-3500.

Sony would be what I'd be comparing with some interesting new brands from China now.

Expect those New 2015 Samsung supplies may be sold out by now, but they were available through summer of 2017. Those 2016 KS9800's are priced right now and don't seem to have the 'brown-spot' issues of the JS9500's, Curved, but no 3D and I'd buy SquareTrade's best, even though I usually avoid warr. extensions. That would be the most recent Samsung i'd consider.

Tried Vizio and LG's from Costco and was most thankful for their return policy.

If you are going to consider a LG try to get the C7 if it's in your budget. The B7 is fine but you have a better chance of getting a better panel with the C7 than the B7 that you get in Costco and you can still get the Square Trade warranty even though you bought it somewhere else.

USA only. In Canada, extended warranty purchases are only for sets purchased from COSTCO.

Dear ______,

Thank you for contacting Samsung. I have read your email and I understand that you have a Samsung TV with an upgrade option using Evolution Kits. The Evolution Kits are currently not being produced and I can imagine this can be disappointing to you. I sincerely apologize if this has caused any inconvenience to you and would like to help you with all the available information. I would like you to inform you that in 2012 we started the Evolution Kits and they were software and processor updates. And we released an physical upgrades for them in 2013, 2014, and 2015 and a software upgrade in 2016. This covers the 2012 models to the end of the promised upgrade period. Just because we are no longer releasing physical upgrades for them this does not exclude them from App updates and other firmware upgrades.

There was no Evolution Kit released in 2016. It was determined that there were no significant processor improvement that merited customers buying a new evolution Kit. It was announced that all the 2015 Smart hubs would receive a firmware update to update Smart Hub to Smart Hub 2.0 and this would be considered the Evolution Upgrade for the year. The same continued in 2017 as there were no significant Hardware changes; so no physical kit has been released.

I believe the TVs were advertised as future proof but Samsung had disclaimers that we can choose to halt production at any time. Just like Smart Hub apps we could terminate all the streaming functionality on they TVs and there would be no legal ramifications because in the terms and conditions we state that we can terminate it at any time and without notification. I see that you have mentioned about a refund for the TV. I wish I could help you but that option is unavailable.

I know how inconvenient this entire experience would have been for you. Samsung is committed to give you the best customer experience and we assure that we stay transparent in our communication with you.

I hope you understand.

If you have any more questions related to Samsung devices, feel free to contact us. We are available 24/7 to assist you.

If you wish to chat, email or call us for further assistance, please go to the "Contact Us" option available on the right hand side of the E-mail.

Thank you for being a Samsung Customer!

So now they're claiming they can remove all smart app function and still be okay? This company has no backbone or shame, there should be a class action lawsuit to get Samsung's attention.

That is why I am done buying anything from Samsung. They advertise features in order to sell televisions with no intentions to continue supporting that feature after that model year has ended. I purchased three Samsung Skype cameras from Samsung and within a year they stopped supporting Skype and the cameras. Now, My HU7250 just **** the bed three years after purchase. I am surprised that they were that candid with you in that email. Usually, they will skirt the issue.

Sorry guys, I cannot confirm this. I am on a European unit with fw 1520 and HLG is not working. I've checked the SES UHD demo channel which uses HLG and the colors there look washed out, depending on the scene.

Sony would be what I'd be comparing with some interesting new brands from China now.

Those 2016 KS9800's are priced right now and don't seem to have the 'brown-spot' issues of the JS9500's, Curved, but no 3D and I'd buy SquareTrade's best, even though I usually avoid warr. extensions. That would be the most recent Samsung i'd consider.
Art, Thanks again for the suggestions. I have also found that I have an extended warranty on my UN65HU9000 with Best Buy! So no I just need to figure out which new TV to get!

Thanks for the suggestion! Since I just discovered that I still have an extended warranty through Best Buy, I need to figure out which new TV I want!

Same here. My next purchase will NOT be a Samsung. When I do upgrade, I'm holidng out for an ATSC 3.0 set as I can get Phoenix and Tucson locals near me. Phoenix is supposed to be ATSC 3.0 in April, just in time for NAB.

I was afraid of that, and dissapointing news. I also have been calling the NJ office at Samsung and have yet to get a return call. I'm going to go the BBB route sense they dont seem to like that. Not happy at Samsung at this point. Hopefully they can make it right.

CES is a few weeks away. What is the likely hood they release a new EVO kit for us? Zero?!

Yes, I understand and that's great. Hopefully the Geek Squad can just fix it. On a warranty replacement they may want to supply a refurbished (90 day warranty) and I'd want to inspect that thoroughly (always wonder WHY it was returned).

You do need to be aware that a new Samsung KS9000 or MS9000 isn't even close to a comparison with a HU9000/SEK3500. The KS9800 would come the closest within Samsung. If you're limited to BB, they may not stock the 2016 and your best choice won't be a Samsung. The Q9F/Q9C's are current 'flagship' but don't seem to be very well thought of.

I'm all set for next five years with what I have now, I'm lucky to have researched my planned purchase of the SEK3500 and found out where Samsung was going in time to buy a New 2015 (w/3D) JS9000 with maximum warranty at 1/3 cost.

No point in my thinking about 'best' on the market now since that'll surely change by 2022.

I'd think pretty much zero. The support from Samsung has been so bad that I don't expect any more work from them on their 2014 lineup. For me personally the Samsung story is going to end with my next TV set, as my current one (European UE55HU7590 with SEK-3500) has been nothing but a big disappointment – crappy software, bad support and crappy panels (and I have played the panel lottery three times).

So Art, if they can't fix it, what should I try for?

My knowledge is now nearly a year dated, from the experience outlined below:

AFAIK my choice at the time (New {2015} JS9000) is now no longer available. New KS9800's (2016's) are, but perhaps not from BB, but likely for them to supply a refurbished one. You read my concern w/refurb, but your Warranty may well compel you to accept one.

My personal experience with BB is limited. Bought my AVR there, declined their extended warranty and after they wanted $99 for $9 worth of cables....

In your situation; given that 2018 models will soon be on their dock, I'd look to get one of their display models that I could see and liked (not an "open-box" or refurbished) and probably not a Samsung. I have no recent 'brand' knowledge, but had many great Sony's, so I'd start looking at them. (Had really bad experiences with both Vizio and LG but fortunately they were Costco and returned.)

Top of my list would be return of the SEK-3500 as soon as Geek Squad condemns my HU9000 (while you have that RMA). Don't let time expire on that as it could still be re-purchased if necessary. Next step's timeline depends on your 'TV' needs but longer is better.

For the replacement of a failed UH9000, (fine TV flagship example) I'd really take my time, remember you needn't accept their first offer and explore all options available. For me (SquareTrade) it would be the cash I put out to buy it. Of course that was a figure greatly discounted, so I'd be back to locating best deal again. I wouldn't lose my 3D, so that would limit my choices, for others the trade-off of that for the greater 'nits' and DV etc. might be worthwhile.
