It's decently light controlled. In the afternoon/evening, there is no direct sunlight in the room. For the cable HDMI, did you set that input to auto?

I think a lot of it is perception. Im on the fence but I think ill probably return mine, I like it more with time though. But my wife is looking at it saying the js8500 looked better. I think the X930C looks better on cable content though which is what we watch 90% of the time.

OK Thanks for clarifying that. You must be actually seeing it on the 930c. My original thoughts while comparing the TV's on the site was that this would be a possibly huge difference. Unless I am still not in Obvious Mode and just don't see it on their site. And if they did omit it, maybe it was added later in firmware. In any case, glad you that cleared up as this is an important feature.

If you're talking about Dynamic Range:

Menu path: Home>Settings>Picture and Display>Dynamic Range. Choices: Auto, Full, Limited; This is set for each HDMI input.

Normally set this to Auto (or you can also use Limited) for an HDMI input where you are viewing Video content (e.g., cable box, BD, Roku, FireTV, etc.). All Video content is mastered to Limited RGB values. The Auto setting should work fine to recognize the input, but you can also use the Limited setting if you're only going to be viewing Video content on that HDMI connection. NOTE: Auto won't necessarily work properly with most computers playing back Video as the computer GPU will send the full flag even though the Video content is limited.

BTW - "Full" doesn't mean better than limited, it's just different - Full expects content mastered with black and white at RGB 0 and 256 respectively, which is something you'll have primarily with games w/a dedicated gaming device or PC gaming. Video content has black and white at RBG 16 and 235. If you play back Video content (cable box, BD, Roku, etc.) on the Full setting, colors will be washed out.

Just hang it on the wall and put a tv stand in front of it so they can't touch it.

I tell them but unfortunately an occasional object always seems to find it's way near or close to the screen.

It will be on the wall and I have pulled my stand out to make it harder for them to touch but, it would be good to know that the TV will not shatter if the occasional ball(which shouldn't be thrown in the house in the first place) hit's the screen.

Thank God my current Sharp Elite is still intact and kids know not to throw anything in the house, but it's those accidents I get worried about.

It was in store. Before you could search online for local open boxes but not anymore.

The one I bought was in a box 2 days ago, it was selling for $5500, then 2 days later they threw away the box and marked them down.

I have seen the 65 LG Curved OLED marked down to 2999 before, so it is possible to get that low. Of course it depends on the store manager I guess.

BTW, open boxes are treated as new, you still get the full warranty.

From the FAQ in my sig...

"Is there a way to automatically switch picture modes? Can I change between Game and Cinema modes on the same input depending on whether I'm watching a movie or playing a game on my device?

[Civuck][Nazgulled]"
"The auto picture mode setting might help. [Civuck]It works by detecting the frame-rate of content and then switching to the appropriate mode eg. 24fps = Cinema Home or 30fps+ = Game. I'm not sure if this is a Global setting or per-input. You can't choose the Picture mode switched to for 24fps content - it is always Cinema Home.

This setting is only available while viewing content on an input:

Action menu>Picture adjustments>Auto picture mode; Set to On

[Nazgulled]I've been using this for a while now. It works, but unfortunately it's not something I'd consider a solution. Here's why:
  • When a 24p source is detected it switches to Cinema Home and when the video stops playing, it should switch back to whatever mode it was before. This is not always working, sometimes it remains at Cinema Home. Making this feature useless. I have a feeling this was working sometime ago, maybe Sony broke it on a firmware upgrade, I don't know.
  • It should let you pick which mode you want for 24p sources and not lock it to Cinema Home. What if you have your settings under Cinema Pro or Custom? You can't auto pick that mode for 24p. This doesn't affect me personally, but it's a stupid limitation.
  • I want Cinema Home mode for more than just 24p sources. Yes, most Movies and TV shows are 24p sources, but what about other content sources like YouTube or something? I'd still like to have Cinema Home for all my video sources, that's what I tweak them for, for video. But this auto-mode feature won't work for those because they can have 30fps or 60fps or whatever.
  • It would me you'd have to pick Game mode for everything else, like the SHIELD's UI. Well, I have my Game mode with lots of sharpening (actually, with reality creation) and that looks good for the games I stream, it doesn't look good at all for everything else. For instance, all the video thumbnails in the launcher, all the movie posters in Kodi and etc, they look really bad.

I'd rather have a quick button to switch picture modes on the remote instead of going through a menu. But I guess that just ain't possible."

Lets see a picture of the receipt. Find that very hard to believe. When they have 910C tv that retails for $4999 and they list a open box for $4224. Especially considering Bestbuy has there price back up to $5999 on the x940c. $5999 don't sound like a blowout price, much less would they drop there pants $3k on a open box.

The image of the receipt would shut me up real quick though.

I'm about a week into owning the x930c, and I'm returning it for a different model. I can't afford another $2k towards the X940c or else I absolutely would. I fell in love with the delicious colors of the 65" x930c, but my disgust came from the edge bleeding during grey scenes and certain dark scenes, even when the backlight is turned down, and regardless of settings. For my viewing, and expectations for black levels and dark scene uniformity, I need FALD. Unfortunately this is a rare feature and not always very well implemented. X940c would be the big dawg to get but it's out of my price range by a lot.

HDR needs a lot of work in order to be a decent experience. HDR content turns the TV into a backlight monster. Edge bleeding/blooming becomes way too obvious with HDR, and the backlight gets cranked to a degree that makes it uncomfortable to view in a dark room. I respect the tech, but it needs work.

The 120hz capability via HDMI PC connection is awesome. As a monitor, it's great set.

For the price paid, $2500, it delivers in every area except for the edges getting lighter than the rest of the screen in a lot of dim or grey content. I wish it had FALD like the X940c but it doesn't.

Sony, I love you, but it's not working out. I'll check up on you from time to time but I think we've taken this as far as it'll go. It's not just you, it's me and my picky, control freak nature.

The image of the receipt would shut me up real quick though.

They will drop the price when they hang the new models 940D, but then you might get the demo display that plays 24/7.

Some store, at the discretion of the manager will let you price match open boxes... Very YMMV, you might need to haggle a bit. Hope my receipt helps.

*removed receipts, was told it may cause trouble here.

That does help! Strong deal! I need to return mine I got for $4399 a week ago. Wasn't from Bestbuy though.
