Yes that is probably why its not detecting hdr. But I am using a sony sound bar that does have 4k pass through. I will test the directv box directly to the tv and see if that works.

Yes tv firmware is all up to date.

My 75x940C with the latest updates will display HDR from the C61K, but it doesn't show the resolution or HDR flags when you bring up the display button, however, you can check picture mode, and it does engage the HDR picture mode automatically. Kudos to Sony, didn't realize they even enabled HLG HDR in the 940C.

Hello guys. I finally pulled the trigger on a true 4K UHD player. Sony UBP-800x.

This has become a very long thread!

Is there a concensus on specific HDR settings? Or is it best to leave the settings as is once it detects HDR?

I am new to this other than some occasional 4K netflix and amazon 4k.

Been upscaling 1080p blu-ray for the past year or so...

I appreciate it.

I have always left it at the default values. The TV will automatically go to the HDR picture setting, and a lot of the settings cannot be changed but there are settings that can be changed.

I watched the Brian Seltzer Christmas special on my 4K DTV DVR and I thought the colors seemed off. The Red color seemed over saturated, but it could have been the stage lighting. Overall not that impressed. That's the only show so far I have watched on Satellite with HDR. I need to watch some other shows to see if the colors are any better.

Hi All -

I got my brand new Apple TV 4K yesterday and I’m having issues playing iTunes Movies in 4K and HDR.

To confirm my setup, I have a Sony 930C and set the HDMI slot to Enhanced. All HDMI ports are HDCP 2.2 compliant and the HDMI cable is from Blue Jeans and supports 4K HDR.

The weird thing is when I’m in the Apple TV menu it’s in 4K HDR (Picture 1). Also, when I play a 4K title on Netflix it’s in 4K HDR (Picture 2).

When playing a 4K title from iTunes it only streams in HD (assuming 1080p) in SDR. I cannot get it to play in 4K HDR (Picture 3).

Any ideas on how I can fix this? My internet is hooked up via Ethernet cable and running at 100/100 speeds. My TV only supports HDR 10, but seeing as the Apple TV Menu and Netflix works I assume it’s an issue with iTunes Movies.

FYI - The 4K badge appears in iTunes before playing the movie, but I can only see HD while playing (with HDR disabled).

For those who have 4K DTV they are showing the Rose Bowl parade in 4k & HDR on channel 106 January 1st at 8:00am PST. They are also showing a number of NBA games in 4K HDR.

That 4k badge may not be indicating what you own. Did you buy that movie on iTunes or is it linked to Movies Anywhere and you bought on Vudu or Google?

If you bought on Vudu or Google in SD or HD, then it won't upgrade on iTunes, unless you bought it on iTunes.

Hello everyone, I am a owner of the 940C. I have been following this thread since day one. I actually read it daily. I have a question, what is the 'Color Depth'. Is it 8 bit, 10 or 12? Thank You, in advance.

This is a great thread, with so many informed contributors! As for the panel, it is 10 bit.

Thank You, for the reply I appreciate it very much. Would you by chance have a link, you could attach. I would like to read up on the information, in detail, about the 940C 10 bit panel. I notice in your signature, you have the Oppo 203 player. I own that model also, which is why I wanted the information pertaining to which bit the 940C is. I hope I am not going off topic, I apologize if I am. If I need to ask this question in the Oppo 203 thread, I will. But, the plus of asking it here is, we all have either the 940C or 930C. Here goes, do you leave your Opp 203 'Color Depth' on default which is 'Auto'. Or did you change it to '10 bit' because of your 940C. Thank You, in advance for the reply.

Great combination, the 940C and the OPPO 203! The best answer for your question concerning color depth on the OPPO is to read the OPPO FAQ. http://watershade.net/wmcclain/UDP-2...n-display-mean Your question is too complex to simply answer here and in the end, it may be best resolved with you trying various settings using various video input sources to find your answer.

Mine is set to Auto, as I believe that is the best setting for it. Try it out both ways and see which you prefer - all that matters is it looks good to you.

So I’ve had Geek Squad come out a few times to look at this HDR issue I‘ve been having since I’m still under warranty with them. They ordered a new motherboard to try to fix it, however the tech just called me today and said that this TV does not support HDR 10 and only supports HDR through built in apps. Is this true? I was always under the impression that it supports HDR 10 from the 2015 update, but not Dolby Vision as it does not have the X1 Extreme. Dealing with them has been infuriating and I just want the store credit at this point.

Yes this does support HDR 10. I'm constantly playing PS4 games that support HDR and it looks phenomenal on the 940C. AMAZING! What's your issue?

I got an Xbox One X on release day and was super excited to use the HDR function of the TV, but the games just look horrible with it turned on. They’re washed out and I get a ton of light bleed from the edges. One of the techs that came out took one look at it and said “wow that looks like ****!”. All of the issues go away if I turn HDR off from the Xbox settings. It looks the same with my PS4 Pro too. I’ve also had an issue recently with the TV randomly power cycling. I’m just nervous because I got this TV when I was working for Best Buy 3 summers ago, and there’s no way I can afford another one of this caliber without the discount since I’m a student and have 2 years of grad school left.

Not sure if you wrote it previously but did you turn on the enhanced HDMI in the TV's settings for that input? Also not sure if you have 930 or 940c. I have the 940c (also never got why the 930 and 940 have one thread... but that's another issue )

I cleared the cache in the settings for the storage of the 940c TV and it seems to have stopped (for now) the random reboots.

I've noticed TV reboots when powering on my XBOX ONE X also. Annoying.

LOL, that's what I thought I remembered also, which was why I asked for a link confirming the information. Does anyone have a link they can attach, with the information? I couldn't find anything on the Internet, confirming or denying that it is 10 Bit. Thank You, in advance.

Best Buy replaced the video board yesterday. Picture quality seems a bit better but it’s still restarting by itself, and these idiots keep claiming that the TV doesn’t support HDR10 at 4K. They ordered a power board now. Has anyone had success getting them to just give store credit?

Probably the reason they are confused about HDR10 support is that *initially* the TV did not support HDR10 because the standard was not yet finalized, but it was added in a later firmware update. That update was promised at launch, so it was not just something Sony did out of the kindness of their hearts later on, but rather making good on a promise made at the time it was initially sold.

Internally, the Netflix and Amazon apps use HDR10, and it is supported by the HDMI ports as well.

After nearly two years of owning the 940c, I'm still blown away by the picture quality! Last night we popped in The Revenant on UHD, having previously watched it twice on Blu. We were blown away by the subtlety added to the picture with the increased resolution, truly showing off the beautiful landscapes - the juxtaposition of how ugly the events captured onscreen are to the beauty of the landscapes filmed is quite jarring at times. The HDR truly brought to film to life and my wife commented several times at how amazing the picture was on my awesome 940c! This is the first set I've ever had that I didn't want to upgrade after a year! But, sure would love that Z9D, lol!

Yeah me also, although since this last update mine has started this terrible reboots and force closing of apps that is driving me nuts. I am calling Geek Squad today since I purchased the 2 year extended warranty. So we shall see how this works out, as I love my set and none of the new Sony's impress me except the Z9D. I really do not want to replace the set so hopefully they can fix it. I was one that loves the internal speakers and the glossy screen to add pop. My luck
