Well, this did the trick. I set mine to "clear" and voilà, the bars went from grayish black to black (with HP: Philosophers Stone 4K). I didn't notice any pronounced changes to the image after activating it either so I might just keep it on. vman, according to Sony EU, TrueCinema is only active for "broadcast" sources?

Frequently Asked Questions related to the Motionflow feature on my TV

What is the "True Cinema" mode in the "Motionflow" menu?

True Cinema is a Motionflow mode which restores the original film motion in broadcast programs.
By the way, the XBR75Z9D looks terrific. However, I'd really miss the 940C's great sounding speakers that we use quite a bit when watching cable TV or with the apps such as Pandora (while turning the screen off!).

"Clear" uses BFI, so in a dark room, it is probably fine. For a brighter room, it will cause the image to be pretty dark.

Which motionflow setting would have the least impact on other calibrated settings?

Custom (unless Clearness is set to 0)
Clear

I've been noticing more and more that there is a pretty heavy audio lip-sync issue on my 940c with my Marantz SR7010 hooked up over ARC.

On my Marantz I have the audio delay set to 0ms, and I have tried both "hdmi lip sync" both on and off (seems to make no difference). The audio is behind the video, so adjusting the setting on the Marantz would only increase the delay, and it's clear that the delay is coming from the TV.

In attempting to diagnose it, I used the Netflix test patterns a and my iPhone set to 240fps "Slow-Motion" to record, and found that my AppleTV4 has the audio 100% dead-on in sync (required 11ms of delay on the Marantz), but when using the Netflix player on the TV, even with all delays turned off, the audio is about 150ms behind the video.

I didn't really run into the problem before, because I used my AppleTV primarily for 1080p content, but lately I've been watching more 4K content on the TV, and the delay is driving me nuts.

It appears that audio the delay is actually happening inside the TV. Does anyone have an idea what can be done to fix this?

The only Audio setting I can see is ClearAudio, which I have tried set to both on and off, which has no obvious difference.

I read about so many issues with ARC in these forums, I wonder why people don't just use the Toslink out from the TV to the AVR. I've used both my Sony's like this and never had an issue.

When I first bought my TV, I found Toslink to work better. The following year, my sister bought the XBR65X930C and a Denon receiver. She set up the TV to use ARC and was happy with it. I decided to see if ARC had improved and found that it worked much better than when I first tried it.
Favorite features (I don't know if these work with Toslink):
Changing TV volume controls the receiver volume including mute.
TV switches between internal and external speakers when receiver is turned off or on.
TV Audio selected on the receiver automatically when opening Netflix app.

Just tested with Toslink, audio seems to be about 200ms behind the video, so actually even worse than I was getting with ARC.

I like Custom with Smoothness and Clearness set to Min. I find everything else to bother me, with the exception of off, but it somehow impacts HDR and the black bars on off. At least on my set.

I quickly played with Custom and both settings on minimum yesterday. I'm not sure if it affected the black level but it didn't seem to have any effect on peak brightness. You can directly switch from "Custom" to "Off" and it looked the same to me.

Yes, it does exactly that. For some reason turning it completely off interferes with the local dimming, but turning it to min and min on custom solves the problem.

I always hold off on updates in the beginning (930c owner) this update however does sound more promising than the previous updates. Would love to hear more members take on it!

I did some more testing with Motionflow on HDR material and will now say it absolutely alters the black level when set to Custom and Min/Min. A good scene to test this with is Stranger Things S2 E5, about halfway through there is a scene with the characters against a pitch black background. The drop in black level is very apparent when switching from Off to Custom. If there is any drop in peak brightness by doing this it is not noticeable to me.

940c after update

Noticed after the latest update under External inputs>HDMI Signal Format
once an HDMI input is selected the caption under Enhanced Format says “Displays High-Quality signals on HDMI inputs 2 & 3....”

I assuming this is a templated caption that doesn’t apply to the 940c???

A new firmware update and I never got notification of the last update nor this new one? Oh well I really didn't want to do another factory reset, which from what I have read is highly recommended to do after a new firmware update.

I have my TV settings set to let me know of any updates, but for some reason never notified and I check in the tools menu to confirm that I am still on the old firmware. I guess I can always go the USB route. I was curious CC, when you did the new firmware update did that have an affect on your picture settings?

It did not effect the picture settings. I would highly recommend this latest update as the performance of the TV OS seems to be much better.

You and me both!😍 Does anyone know, why? Does anyone know why some are notified and some of us are not? I go into the menu daily to check if I have a new update available, and the message I am given is 'Your software is up to date' My software version is PKG3.915.0139NAB

Thanks CC,I haven't read to much positive comments regarding the new firmware update. I do experience some OS instability from time to time so I will do the update if I don't get a notification on my TV I will download it from there web-site and go the USB route.
