Is chroma 4 4 4 really that important for pc gaming?

Everything I read says it effects text, but what about the graphics themselves? Are they affected?

I use a dell 4k monitor on my gaming machine (And it's pretty much solely gaming, tons of steam games, using an old overclocked 2500k cpu @4.4 ghz and 16 gb ram), and I have noticed that my m43 c1 honestly has better colors. chroma 4 4 4 would affect text, but what about the rest of the games?

I run pretty much everything at highest settings. That includes stuff like grand theft auto 5. I don't really care about the text (Or rather, I don't care if it's blurry)

4:4:4 is vastly over hyped. Yes if you are sitting 6 inches from a 43” TV you will definitely see the difference in the edges of text. The text will have a sort of rainbow effect and specifically Red text will bleed from letter to letter.

However, not many people sit at those distances from a TV for games. Just look at all of the pictures anyone ever posts showing the issues with a non 4:4:4 TV. All of those pictures are zoomed in to extremes that even our eyes can’t achieve.

I have included some samples of what the issues with text look like. However, please note none of these pictures are true 4:4:4 but some of them look perfectly fine. To be more specific, if your video card is sending out 4:4:4 then it will look just fine even if your TV can’t display true 4:4:4. The only issues really arise when your video card is forced to output less than 4:4:4 like with 4K @ 60 FPS and the M-series.

Nvidia doesn’t do a good job with the chroma sampling for some reason. They are also inconsistent with it as well.

The bottom line is that 4:4:4 is important if you are using a very large display at very close ranges for text based programs. Don’t worry about it at all for games. It never really affects them at all even if you sit close.

I really wish people that get hung up on 4:4:4 would also get hung up on the Samsung TVs that don’t support 1080p @ 120 FPS. That really is the best gaming experience I have encountered so far. There simply isn’t any gaming experience better than playing Black Ops III on an 80 inch TV at 120 FPS from about 9 feet away.

So chroma 4:4:4 doesn't effect image quality AT ALL, only text?

Seems a bit apparent when 4:4:4 is stacked against 4:2:0

IDK about 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2 for 3D portion of games (not UI).

4:4:4

4:2:0 (Flag staircasing/Objecive Market blocky/Weak blue text)

EDIT! I meant 4:2:0 for the flag staircasing, etc. NOT 4:2:2! Sorry.

Alright, yeah it's definately a bit apparant... if you blow it up on a 4k screen. I'm wondering how much of a difference it would be considering the vizio has better contrast and ESP. better blacks.

The dell is p2715q, which does look nice, but has that white bleed effect on black screens that all ips devices have. I think I'll run both (the vizio with an adaptor and the dell on hdmi) and see if I notice a difference. Although that's also not the most accurate...

Sit at a normal gaming distance and try to discern a difference between those images. The biggest issue is that people move to within a couple of inches of the screen and then say the difference is HUGE. If you can’t see the entire screen at that distance you certainly couldn’t play a game on it that way.

Made a mistake. The staircasing, etc. seem to be for 4:2:0, not 4:2:2.

I actually used tried that in 100% scaling on our 4:2:2 LG 47LK520 1080p HDTV from 2011/earlier and it's not that easy to notice and I think would even be less noticeable if the game was actually moving.

@thread :

Sorry. I meant 4:2:0 for the staircasing and stuff. Not 4:2:2.
