Sony 2016 HDR TV Pricing

Today, Sony announced the pricing and availability of its 2016 line of HDR-capable UHD/4K LCD TVs. In the list below, the number immediately after "XBR" indicates the screen size:

XBR-55X850D: $2500
XBR-65X850D: $3500
XBR-75X850D: $5000
XBR-85X850D: $10,000
XBR-55X930D: $3300
XBR-65X930D: $5000
XBR-75X940D: $8000

All seven models carry Sony's "4K HDR Ultra HD" logo, which indicates that the sets meet the Consumer Technology Association's definition of HDR (basically, HDR10). They are not certified as Ultra HD Premium as specified by the UHD Association, and I suspect that Sony will not pursue this certification because the company often goes its own way.

The X850D is edgelit, while the X930D implements what Sony calls "Grid Array" backlighting. At CES, I tried to learn exactly what this means, but I was told that the patents are still pending, so no technical info was being disclosed. I got the impression that it's a form of edgelighting with some new type of light-guide technology, but I don't know for sure. I do know that only the X940D's backlight is full array with local dimming (FALD).

All seven models went on pre-sale today, and they will be shipping from Amazon, Best Buy, and other outlets in March.

Was hoping the 940d was going to be priced a little lower. Since it is the only FALD screen this year from Sony, I think they are pricing it tad too high. Still want to see reviews and member impressions, input lag etc. before making a decision.

I am also surprised they will be out in March, was thinking they would come out much later.

I don't know, but I presume that it will have some sort of dimming algorithm. Many companies refer to edgelit dimming as "local dimming," but I don't buy that for a second.

Ordered the X940C yesterday anyways. Sure 940D will be a top TV this year but 8k for me is no way. Guess we will have to see how much the picture will improve over the X940C

$10k is way too much for an 85" set that WILL have light bleed and clouding. If the 930D has any kind of " grid array " lighting like the 850C, it will have banding as well.

I am so happy I have returned to the days of music and movies being 90+% of my enjoyment rather than my "av hobby".

...and with it the notion that $10,000 for an 85" tv is somehow anything but insane merely because..."it used to be $30,000".

Lmao

At the same price, I rather have the speakers than not. And the speakerless 930D is more expensive than the 930c... Ugh huh. Gimme back the speakers.

It is even more ironic that there is only a $500 difference between the MSRP of 65X930D and the current price of 75X940C

That's par-for-the-course regarding Sony; they "never" disappoint when it comes to pricing.

Yes. the X9 series will have active 3D. There was talk that the X8 series will not but the specs that Sony put up says that the 55" will not while the 65", 75" and 85" will have active 3D.

Didnt take long, despite these MSRP best buy is already listing the 8-series as $900 off. 65X850D listed as $2499

Ok. I am totally confused. Best Buy has the yet to be released 65xbr x850D listed at the UPP price. Since Best Buy is an "authorized Sony dealer" the listed price is ALREADY at the lowest price they can legally sell it for and still remain an authorized dealer. LOL!

Too pricey for LCD-- looks more like OLED pricing to me. Considering it's inherit limitations, large format LCD needs to be more cost competitive. I got sick of waiting for pricing to be reasonable: my 100" Silver Ticket and BenQ DLP are on their way.

What to do if you find yourself stuck with no hope of rescue:
Consider yourself lucky that life has been good to you so far. Alternatively, if life hasn't been good to you so far, which given your present circumstances seems to be more likely, consider yourself lucky that it won't be troubling you much longer...

Wowza.. $10k for 85" edge lit. Guess there is another reason to not regret my $5k FALD 85" JVC. HDR and WCG is great when you have the right content, but FALD comes in to play with all content.

I used to be a huge sony fan, but the chinese manufacturers need to put these guys in their place. Charge a premium for a premium product, not because it has what used to be a premium brand stamped on it.

After looking at those prices all I can say is no thanks I'll pass. My good o'l 2014 Sony 55W900A is safe for yet another year and I have no complaints about that! But charging those prices tell's me that Sony is out of their minds.

Thank you Sony for bringing these to market.

Thank you early adopters for continual funding of R&D to satisfy your visual stimulated endomorphins.

Looking forward to these prices dropping 30-40% to be considered "reasonable".

I've also asked when will we reach the saturation point.....
