I'm preparing a case to have my set replaced (cloudy issue) by Sony, but before I do; I want to make sure I have tried everything and have proper documentation before I call. With that said, has anyone here received a replacement from Sony? If so, what was the procedure / experience like? Were you required to package the defective set and ship it, or does Sony make arrangements with a local vendor to deliver and pick up? I opted out of the GSPP - I couldn't stomach the price .

Thanks!

Wow, that looks perfect. Maybe I really am just that unlucky.

I wonder if best buy will lock me out of returns if I swap it once more.

Sony sent the NEW TV using "White Glove" service. This is supposed to mean two people come to your house remove and rebox the old TV and install the new TV (except for hanging on wall I think). Now I only had one guy show up, so I had to help him, but he did take the old one with him.

Perfect - thanks you! May I ask the nature of the replacement and turn around time?

I had my 850C replaced with a 940D (paid a bit to upgrade) from first call with Sony to the 940D being in my home was about 3 1/2 weeks.

I have minor clouding sometimes on completely black screens and other times not. I couldn't tell you what the backlight is doing at those times. I don't believe for one second anybody has had no clouding, however mild it may be, at any time on this tv.

After a week my 940d developed horrible clouding in all four corners. Occasionally it will disappear if I toggle local dimming off and then on again, but then it returns. BB is swapping out the set so stay tuned.

I'm in the process of having my 75-X850C swapped out too, I'm supposed to call them back tomorrow. If you don't mind , how much extra did you have to pay to get a 940D?

What was wrong with your 850C? I have moderate vertical banding and very mild clouding. The more I read on this thread it seems like a crap shoot with this model too.

Has anyone asked for and received a refund after multiple failed attempts at getting an acceptable panel?

Here are my results with "Auto Local Dimming" set to "OFF". I used the following *test* from YouTube -

I really don't know why I would ever view content on my TV with "Auto Local Dimming" set to "OFF", when with "Auto Local Dimming" set to "ON", I have NO clouding issues. Would there ever be a time to turn "OFF" the "Auto Local Dimming" on the 940D? It would be interesting to see if other 940D owners have "clouding" when displaying the *test" from the YouTube video I posted when "Auto Local Dimming" set to "OFF". Right now it seems the only 940D owner not experiencing some sort of "clouding" on the 940d w/ "Auto Local Dimming" set to "OFF" is AustinJerry.

Regardless, I'm really enjoying my 940D and have no plans of contacting Best Buy regarding the "clouding" issues on my 940D (even though it looks pretty bad w/ "Auto Local Dimming" set to "OFF").

If people are running these tests with Brightness set to max, then that would exacerbate any clouding. My test were run with my published settings, with Brightness=35, Contrast=90 and Black Level=50. Local dimming off or on did not affect clouding, although with Dimming off, the black background was closer to a dark gray, which AFAIK is typical.

OK, I've been taking a look at this TV for a few months, and been going through this thread for a good week now. I got up to about page 150. I decided to pull the trigger today and bought it through Crutchfield to save the sales tax over my local BB. Since then, I decided to read just the last 10 pages of this thread and I'm a little worried about all the talk on clouding, banding, worse if it's hung on a wall, and people swapping out for their 2nd or third sets!

What are my chances of getting a set I'll be happy with? I'm coming from a 73 in. Mitsubishi DLP about 6 years old. Good picture.......but this will be my first LCD/LED screen used for my primary TV viewing.

Is there much buyers remorse here???

Thanks for following up! The only reason I care about the non local dimming case is because of the issue I'm seeing with HDR, but I don't know if everyone is seeing that problem. It might be a bug only present on some sets for all I know.

That aside, I'm a bit disappointed that it seems like Sony is relying on good dimming to make up for not-so-good panels in some cases. My 3 year old, cheaper Samsung is more uniform with dimming off on a black screen.

Having said that, I actually wouldn't mind having your set. I find clouding much more bearable when distributed like that than when you get a few small, bright clouds, which is what I have right now. Those just jump out at the most inopportune moments.

I don't know what tests you're running. This isn't a challenge. Come hang your tv on my wall and watch what I watch and do the same things I do. I bet I find some clouding.

Or you have the golden reference 940d. I'm not doubting you have a great set AJ. I just don't believe you have no clouding at all under all conditions.

But it doesn't matter really. I have minor clouding in my set but I've never noticed it when actually viewing content on the tv.And that's fine with me.

I'm getting it switched out because my tv is buggy. I keep getting errors. Last weekend was a nightmare. Backlight quit working and wouldn't respond. HDR wouldn't kick in. Been getting various android errors since. Got one tonight when I tried to pull up action menu and it told me it had quit working. Losing audio to receiver when switching inputs. Might be my fault because I applied the 940C update. But others have and don't have the same problems. But I have been happy with the picture.

I had severe vertical banding on my 850C. Sony offered me the 850D as the 850C is no longer available. I mentioned that the 850D is not 3D capable nor is it a direct lit panel and that i felt the 940D was more comparable. After a bit of back and forth they agreed to send me a new 940D for $800. I have had my 940D for 2 weeks now and have been very pleased with the set.

I just received my 940D yesterday and it looks it's still on 5.1.1; so no Marshmellow yet.

I've seen clouding in all four corners though when the TV transitions from a non-locally dimmed screen to a screen that has LD turned on. I will run tests tonight and post pics.

So there were a couple of issues: 1. The set was randomly restarting, then it started flashing red (where the white and blue are on the bottom). 2. Had smearing issues.

IMHO, any visual sense measurement will vary between people. We all have biases. I don't have any issues that effect my enjoyment of the TV. I will say I think many issues can be related to source (cable, sat, streaming, etc.) quality or cables which seem to be ignored. Tests like on youtube are an example of potential source issues. My set is fantastic. I have a number of friends hoping I'll have a Super Bowl party so they can watch the game on my set.

I have had my 940D for 2 weeks now and have been very pleased with the set.
