My conclusions as well. I just knew that I would be going from great viewing angles on my Panasonic plasma to average at best on my new KS9800, but the compromise was very minimal.

I agree. I ride a stationary bike in our living room while watching the KS9800 and at first, I moved the bike to be less off center. Now I don't bother. The picture looks great from back in the room where I am at about a 270 degree angle off center (or 90 degrees to the left of center). Granted, this isn't for watching "movie night" events, but for the news or a baseball game, works well enough and much better than sets I have had in the past.

I sell tv's here in Canada for a living, and was going to buy an oled myself, until we started seeing burn in on the demos we have. I went with the 9800, just too many problems with newer tech, and the blacks are almost as black on the 9800.

Did I not read that we will be getting a upgrade to the smart hub to make it just like this year's ?

I think we will get one, or at least a firmware upgrade that supports HDR10+ over HDMI. Otherwise it will look pretty bad for Samsung since Sony, LG and Vizio have all been selling tvs since last year that will support Dolby Vision.

Its not just the brightness, its multiple things like input lag in gaming that LG clearly has had some serious problems with their OLED lineup. They seem to have fixed that in the 2017 models (and improved on some 2016 models too), when i was buying it was a big issue. So while 9800's blacks compared to OLED is mathematically worlds apart, in a living-room situation that perceived difference REALLY isnt that big. Gaming input lag you can easily notice.

Until we see a bright OLED with minimal input lag, most of the users have to do some kind of compromises. When there isnt a technical downside at all, you KNOW its going to show in the price, too.

For me, the 9500(EU) has been great, only had bad luck with the TV as it was DOA. Samsung guy came in and changed the main circuit board. The price was very competitive, 2800€ (listed at 4400€) ~1 month after it was released in europe. Every OLED model back then was 3999 and up. And those werent something i could get as a gamer since there was no guarantee that it would get fixed in firmware.

LG C7 OLED looks great (maybe it could be bit brighter, other than that its ~perfect), but then again, i checked the price at the local webstore, 5799€.

The update will be for streaming sources only, specifically to accommodate Amazon Prime, which was also the subject of the announcement.

For external devices, like BD players or gaming systems, etc., it's still an open question whether or not HDR10+ will require HDMI 2.1 as a hardware upgrade and, if so, whether or not any current sets can be modified. However, HDMI 2.1 is not here yet and it will require, basically, new everything. I'm looking at 2020 for my next round of home theater improvements.

If it can be done on Amazon, it can be done on all streaming (and locally stored media files, example vial USB). But seeing how "fast" things change, how important the disk distribution method is anymore ? I personally went from having every game possible on bluray's on my PS3 to not having ANY disks on PS4. Same goes with movies, i have quit a few bluray movie disk, but havent bought any in a loong time. And still dont have a UHD drive.

Just saying, 2020 is getting into that kind of time-frame that things might change on the movie side as where suddenly disks start to disappear. Maybe not quite, but lets say 2022->. A lot of people will be rocking a 10GB internet connections (even on their PHONES with 5G in 5 years), where downloading/streaming 8K material, estimation 250GB / movie is trivial. Maybe there is a new disk technology that offers 250GB+ in a disk, but is that really what people want ? Im thinking movie disks will see the same path as CD's... phasing out quite suddenly and leaving the very limited number of HiFi people, like the current LP audience.

If movie sizes quadruple in size between generations, our internet speeds seem to go up by 10-100x.

For my part I do not expect an updated OCB on my KS98. But I am more than overjoyed at the HDR10 PQ from UHD BRs. I'm certainly happy that the on board apps will be updated though.

Don't get me wrong - it'd be great if Samsung did everything in its power to get us HDMI 2.1, or at least an HDR10+ capable version of HDMI 2.0.

Part 2: Why is color Volume Important ?

Hey my friends, it’s me again.

I just wanted to let you know that I finally finished the second part of my Color Volume article – which is post #2 in my “What is Color Volume?” thread. If you haven’t done so already, I would like to invite you to first read the first part of my article – which is post #1 in that thread.

>LINK: What is Color Volume ?<

I also made further improvements to the first part (post #1 ) of my article, adding more information, including more pics and illustrations. I also added a lengthy Quote from professional colorist Stephen Nakamura to the HDR section.

Stephen Nakamura is a colorist with "Company 3" in LA, who has worked with really high profile directors and cinematographers and knows more about HDR than most people. He has graded in HDR movies like Exodus: Gods and Kings (the first ever movie to be HDR graded); Tomorrowland (Disney’s first HDR grade and a movie made for the format); The Martian; and Joy.

Click the LINK above, or in my signature below, to go to the article.

I hope you like it, thank you!

I'm similarly more than overjoyed with UHD/HDR10, and certainly happy about HDR10+ being streamed to the onboard apps later this year - however, many of us have sizable investments in ATMOS/DTS:X sound systems and until eARC comes with HDMI 2.1, it would appear the most we will get out of streamed HDR10+ on these sets is Dolby 5.1. This is an ever changing technology now, but it looks like soon the choice will be between streamed HDR10+/5.1 and external HDR10/ATMOS/DTS:X. But it is true that even upscaled 1080 and 5.1 surround sound (not to mention 4K/HDR10/5.1) can look and sound awesome, so streamed HDR10+ should be be an improvement, albeit a compromised solution for now.

Yeah I'm "lucky" that I don't have a set up that uses these newer sound formats. I use Theil Powerpoint on-ceiling speakers for my L/C/R, and Theil Powerplane in-walls for side and rear surrounds. I'd have to do a whole lot of re-jiggering to accommodate Atmos so for the foreseeable future it's not something I have to worry about.

Now, when I get around to installing the dedicated HT in the barn....

With so much Technology and Innovation in the flux, seems like everything is a compromise these days. Just gotta figure out at what point/price are you satisfied. First world problems

Noticed something new on my KS98 the last couple of days. Every once in a while, but for no reason I can discern, a little window pops up in the upper right hand corner that says Samsung Extra. It stays for a few seconds then disappears.

Thoughts? Did a recent F/W trigger some setting?

Have seen that a few times myself. It apparently loads extra info on the content you are viewing. Only see it on Satellite channels thru my DirecTV. My KS8000 in the bedroom does it as well and has been for some time now, however, I don't notice it on either set too often.

You can access it, if there is anything to access, by the "EXTRA" button on the upper right side of the remote.

Extra feature has been on the TV since the beginning, you can even bring up the Extra Menu with the dedicated button the TVs remote. After owning it the TV for a month or so, I got tired of that pop-up and so I reset my TV and decided not to Agree to any of the Samsung's terms and policies etc. and since then, I've been free of not only that Extra pop-up but other advertisements in their smart hub.
Also, I've read that the CIA could listen in on your Convo's using Samsung TV's voice features on the TVs and remotes but if you don't agree to terms and conditions, those voice enabled features stay turned off, which puts my mind at ease for what it's worth.

The Extra window has been around at least since I've had my 2014 78HU9000. The HU9000 came with two remotes, the egg shaped one had an extra button. I also think the remote that came with my SEK-3500 has the Extra button. I think the extra button must be buried somewhere in the menu on the remote that comes with the KS9800. I did use the Extra button on the HU9000 a few times. It just brings up extra info or facts about the show that you are watching. Kind of useless and annoying. I never use the Samsung remotes, so I have no access to the button on my Universal Remote MX-980. It can't be learned and has no discrete code that I could find.

Not a clue and I doubt anyone on here does. Samsung is notorious for keeping consumers in the dark on many fronts. Sorry

So no explanation of new features or bug fixes? Without any information why would an owner with a perfectly working KS9800 want to update to a new firmware? Not real forthcoming on Samsung's part.

I downloaded and installed about 2 weeks ago. I have no idea what the update fixed or added. As I have stated in the past, Samsung never gives information on what a new update fixes or enhances. You have to do the research yourself to see if anything was fixed that previously wasn't working correctly or stumble upon some new enhancement. I don't know how Sony or LG inform their customers when they issue a new update, but Samsung is pretty poor.

It's part of the Samsung consumer experience to keep you guessing and engaged with your tv. It's like adding some spice to a long marriage. Sometimes you come home and she's wearing new lingerie. Or sometimes she will gain 20 lbs in a week.
