Thank you @kbyakko and @p5browne . Kevin tells me he has performed all of his calibrations with the camera in contact with the screen. Forgetting about whether or not that is "better" than not being in contact, I've noted a residue of the rubberized gasket on the screen.

I'm told that the temperature of the screen should NOT cause the rubberized gasket to melt or in any way emit an oil or greasy substance from it. So I'm just looking for independent confirmation that the screen should not get hot enough to "melt" rubber in contact (relatively hard contact as the rubber is leaning against the screen) with it.

Thanks.

The only real panel there were issues with, were the old plasma screens. Our panel, no melting issues. No experiences with OLED.

Bolder, more accurate color, blacks are just a tad above OLED but without possible burn in issues, and definitely brighter.
My wife commented that the PQ makes the pictures look so real ! (Note, she NEVER, EVER watched the whole Demo Material video - last night, sat mesmerized through the whole demo !)
If this set stays the way it is, or maybe even gets better, it's going to go way past my 2022 new set replacement timeline.

(Note in my avatar, it's warmed up so much, we're practically back to green grass, and the lake outback has almost completely unfrozen !)

Dang, snow back, and it was heavy and sticky. Lake still unfrozen.

upgrade path

Guys, in your opinion whats the upgrade path (model tv and technology) from the KS9800?

Any thoughts around a Sony A9G Master Series OLED and how it compares to the KS9800?

Waiting to see what this new type of OLED Samsung is bringing out, that's suppose to reduce the problems of the LG Panels. This will put me in line for the 2022 upgrade period. BUT, still more than happy with what I have now.

I would think the Q80 would be an awesome upgrade.

Q80 is full array, its only around 50 zones in Europe but 96 Zones in the USA. I would not recommend the Q80 as an upgrade to the KS9800 unless your getting a warranty replacement. The Q90 would be an upgrade, but Oled would be a bigger upgrade. But if youre used to Full screen brightness during the daytime, could be a downgrade, in my opinion my C8 oled with HDR can have limited full screen brightness. A very good friend of mine that also has a youtube channel has been rotating tvs like crazy this year. He cant find the perfect mix because every tv so far has a downfall that he cant overcome, hes owned every flagship from the past 2 years.

my advice, is to possibly wait til January and see whats coming in the spring.

Does this TV (UN65KS9800) have a built in camera like my old 7500 that it replaced?
The 7500 had a camera at the top center that could be disabled by taping over or actually rotate it backwards so it couldn't see into the room. I see nothing like that on this one. My wife just saw a news report complaining about smart tv's being hacked by people planning to break into homes. They are using the built in cameras to see if anyone is home.

Current owner of the last/best AmPro on the planet. The mighty 4600HD, and it's still running...better than Barco's, especially southern ones.

No camera on this tv... but your cell and laptops all have em. And the remote has a mic on it like most other smart devices. Ppl can also get into your internet network and electric or gas meters to see if you are home or not or just watch ur front door 🙂

Does anyone know what, what I'm assuming is the current counterpart to the 88 inch variant of the KS9800, the 82 inch Q900R, is so darn cheap (currently $5,000, see link below)? The 88 inch variant of both the 2106 and 2017 flagships were $20,000 initially and the 85 inch version of the 2018 flagship was $15,000 ..... so have TV's simply gotten cheaper or has the technology somehow been reduced? It seems like all the specs for 2019's Q900R have only improved .... but maybe not?

LCD prices have dropped significantly across the board. Much easier to upgrade nowadays. Funny thing is, the Q90r is the real flagship, it's better than the 8k version which has worse contrast, colors, and worse sharpness of anything less than 8k.

Competition from oled has also caused a drop in lcd prices.

Many manufacturers now announcing discontinuance of producing LCD panels.
Samsung announced the cancellation of the new QDOLED factory, but have again reversed it to it being built. This will delay QDOLED panels for a bit.
So 2021 ?There goes 3D for any foreseeable future. Enjoy your LCD/LED for now.

There's at least one review for the Q900R on the samsung site that says the PQ is worse than the non-8K tv's with true 4K content .... that sounds like a horrendous error for Samsung to roll out their top-tier product with that particular shortcoming .... is there any explanation why?

Try a different hdmi port on one connect box. You can also always try a new ocb cable or box or both - ebay has some cheap ones.

Possible issues, if your set is not protected by a battery backup UPS, with all the power outages and surges we're having this year, you may have popped a few capacitors in the power supply board. Removal of the board and replacement, or repair at local electronics shop may fix the issue.

Try removing and re-inserting the OCB cable both ends, and make sure the end is seated in all the way.

question for those who do their own calibration

What hardware and software do you use to calibrate your set? Is there a bundled product that includes the software (hopefully easy to use/understand) and hardware (colorimeter and pattern generator)?

Any links to this type of product would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Any links to this type of product would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Calman Home Enthusiast (No longer available - now you buy it by brand and model of your TV - me, OK, all sets are Samsung - issue if several brands you want to calibrate, unless just doing the basics.) Available from Portait Display.
https://www.portrait.com/calman-calibration-software/ Will work for free, sans meter, to get a feel for the software.

Patterns from IScan Duo VQ, and Masciola's HDR Patterns (https://www.avsforum.com/forum/139-d...tterns-62.html) Also, Mobile Forge is available, but it's not quite bit accurate. (I use occasionally from my Amazon Fire Sticks - SDR only)

Note: there are several free calibrating programs and patterns available, but best recommended by those who actually use them.

Spectro - i1Pro 2
Colorimeter - i1Display Pro

Any thoughts around a Sony A9G Master Series OLED and how it compares to the KS9800?
If my TV died tomorrow that's the exact model I would replace my KS9800 with... You can't beat the Sony's motion capabilities, and despite burn in issues (which have gotten a lot better over the years) the Sony's OLED picture is simply fantastic.. 😀🍿🍿🍿

Samsung TV Plus App Not Available?

The Samsung web site says “Note: Samsung TV Plus is only available on 2016 - 2019 Samsung Smart TV's in select territories and an internet connection is required.” I contacted Canada support and they told me this free app is not available on my KS9800, despite what the web site says. Anybody out there actually have it on their set?

Looks like I'll be limping into 2020 with this set - just had another dark spot reveal itself on a light background. This is on top of the faint clouding in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Can't replace with OLED (in it's current form) due to being used in the living room with family and their barbarian watching habits (I kid, I kid), so, very interested to see what Samsung does come early next year.

May just keep my eyes open for a cheap 2018 Q8 to hold me over until the 2021 sets drop. Should Samsung release something new, I'd prefer not to beta test for them!

Have you called Samsung, they replaced my panel for such things, 2 years out of warranty in the past. The least they can do for you is give you a major discount on a 18 or even a 19 qled flagship cuz thats what you have.
Terminader and Arctura like this.
