I searched high and low and did not find any information about this TV on AVS. I decided to make a thread since I know alot of us out there picked on of these set up during Amazon Prime/Best Buy sale. If you have any info or any calibration on this TV, please share with us here.

I bought one of the 55-inch models from Best Buy during their "Beat Amazon to the Punch" sale.

I initially had to take it back for an exchange because the first one I picked up on Tuesday had a large dark spot in the lower left corner - looked like the backlight wasn't illuminating in that area causing about a 5-inch-long "shadow" that was super distracting. I returned it to a store that had more in stock and exchanged it for another one without issues. The folks at Best Buy said they had some heard of a few being returned for similar issues but hadn't seen the problem themselves, despite selling many of them over the past couple months. (The manager said that most of the returns were for size issues, not defects.)

So far I'm loving the TV. It's quite an upgrade from my 10-year-old, rapidly dying JVC 32-inch 720p set. The little 4K content I can access on YouTube and Netflix looks great. I do notice a bit of moire on really tight patterns, which causes a small amount of flickering, but not enough to be distracting.

But I do have a question about the HDR implementation. I can't find any option to turn HDR on or off anywhere in the menus. There's an option called "HDMI UHD Color" and "HDMI Black Level," but they're only for the HDMI inputs, not for the TV itself, including apps. So is the TV auto-detecting HDR content and applying HDR settings? How do I check to see if it's working? I played a bit of "Marco Polo" on Netflix, which is HDR, but I can't tell if the dynamic range is any different than normal. HDR isn't even mentioned in the TV's manual. So, where is it? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Rtings review mentioned massive judder at 24fps? I was looking at the 6300 70 inch (here in canada it costs 3200), but the claim that its only 60hz, and experience judder at 24fps scared me.

fredox19 07-16-2016 07:49 PM

Also you really need a 10bit panel to see the benefits of HDR. This only has 8bit panel. Samsung SUHD line of tvs are the one with the 10bit panel.

If you don't use the "Auto Motion Plus" motion interpolation option, then yes, 24p sources will judder, but that will happen on any TV if you're not using any motion interpolation. Personally, I hate motion interpolation. I think it makes everything look like a crappy soap opera. So 24p judder doesn't bother me.

The degree of judder varies depending on the quality of the film transfer, too. I tested "Ratatouille," "Contact," "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" BluRays and "Gravity," "Jurassic Park," and "Close Encounters" HD streaming and they all looked fantastic to me. The first episode of Netflix's new "Stranger Things" in 4K also looked great to me. No judder outside of what you'd expect from 24p sources. But judder in "Beetlejuice" was awful. It looked like it was 18fps.

I don't know what the actual Hz is for Auto Motion Plus setting. The label that advertises "Motion Rate 120," but like the "HDR Premium" mention, it's on the box but nowhere in the manual or menus.

Need some help. I just got the 50KU6300 and can't get sound via HDMI from my Direct HR24 to their TV on HDMI 1 UHD Color setting. Theater built in apps play fine. If I connect to the other HDMI inputs I get sound, but I can't choose UHD Color with those inputs.

bwhh 07-23-2016 10:54 AM

So far so good...

I got an incredible deal on a UN55KU6300, so I grabbed one to replace a UN46C7000 that was in my man-cave. So far I'm fairly pleased. Panel quality seems to be an obvious downgrade from the smaller TV, but it may just need to be dialed in -- hence the reason for my post.

Are there recommended calibration settings for these TVs yet? Are they similar enough to last year's models that previous recommendations may work well?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If the TV is like the KU7000, only HDMI 1 supports 4K60 444. You need everything in the chain to be HDMI 2.0 for that.

Why do you need UHD Color for a satellite box?

My 2015 JS8600 supports UHD Color 4K60 444 and audio on all 4 HDMI ports.

Auto Motion Off
Dynamic Contrast Low

can anybody comment on Judder in this TV? Rtings.com say its noticeable, is it really that bad? The KU6300 has 19 ms of lag and Im dying to get one but if theres judder present when watching movies, my OCD will kick in ;(

I spent a good 4 hours in front of it yesterday experimenting with various settings and watching content from a variety of sources, and judder was not an issue.

I've had my 55KU6300 for about 2 weeks & have not encountered any judder issues. I also keep those settings shut off. Also if you game this is a great set.

On the plus side I got lucky with this TV during the Amazon sale period & snagged the 55 from Best Buy for $599.00. The day before I made my purchase the 50 was priced at $649 & sold off before i could buy it. Next day I found the 55 at Best Buy for $599 & immediately placed my order. Next day the 55 changed price & was now listed at $849. Starting to think they goofed & I got lucky.

Also my current settings as of 12/20/16 are:
Fit to Screen On
BackLight 8
Brightness 45
Contrast 95
Color 50
Sharpness 0
Color Tone Warm 2
Auto Motion OFF
Dynamic Contrast Low, usually keep all of these setting off but I really like low.
Color Space Auto

Just another update on the judder concerns. I was playing with Auto Motion settings today and regardless of what level I chose, judder is apparent with some content. With Auto Motion off, there is no issue, however. (As you'd expect)

gugarci 07-26-2016 05:37 AM

When I first turned on the TV the Automotion was set to Auto and the Soap Opera effect was horrible.
Been using this TV everyday for the last 2 weeks & I have not noticed any motion issues at all.

Also the 2 reviews below say Judder is not a big problem. But before I bought this TV the Judder possibility almost caused me to buy something else. But at the priced I paid made this TV a no-brainer even I could see some Judder.

Curious as to how the HDR looks on these displays being that peak brightness isn't very high. According to Rtings.com, HDR has no little to no effect on PQ.

Thanks all of you for your responses. I will wait for the review of the Sony 43X800D and then make my decision as to which one to buy. I really really hate returning TV's.

Differences probably won't be very dramatic, since the TV only has an 8-bit panel. You need a 10-bit panel to enjoy the full benefits of HDR.

Problem with apps

I recently purchased a 70" KU6300 from Best Buy. Overall it's a great TV, but sometimes I have a problem with the Apps menu responding slowly. When this happens, it can take a few minutes for the apps menu to respond after powering on the TV. Resetting just the SmartApps doesn't fix it, but resetting the TV entirely will fix the problem. This is annoying because I've got to go through logging into every app separately after resetting.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Do you think it's a software bug that I should wait on a firmware update for or should I exchange the unit for a new one?

gugarci 07-27-2016 01:26 PM

My 55KU6300 just upgraded the firmware about 20 minutes ago to 1121. I couldn't find any specific info on the Samsung website for issues this firmware is addressing.

I haven't experienced this issue, but it sounds like something a firmware update may fix. Have you updated to the latest already? I believe there have been 2 updates already since this TV launched.

Edit: Now that I look, the July 5 update (v1112.2) lists these changes:

- Improved Usability
1) Improved Browser Performance
2) Improved App Performance
3) Improved Stability
4) Improved Usability Of Input Devices

Edit 2: It looks like a third update just hit as well, that isn't listed on the Samsung site just yet. I checked for an update on the TV as per the post above, and it came down for me too...

disbthai 07-28-2016 04:25 AM

Can someone test if the new firmware to see if Samsung added HDR upscaling to this model?

Thanks. I overlooked clicking on the small transparent blue question mark for firmware information. Also as of 8:45 Eastern time my TV is telling me there's no new updates. Will probably take some time for Samsung to roll it out since my 7/5 update was done automatically yesterday on 7/27.

No HDR upscaling in this latest firmware (just checked).

Unless my memory is failing me, Gamma adjustments have been added. I don't remember seeing them before.

Can someone who hasn't updated see if they have gamma controls?

I can confirm I had gamma adjustments before I updated yesterday to 1112.2.

hi guys,

I see some calibrations mentioned in this thread. Are these eyeballed/personal preference or calibrated with a disc/tool?

I copied the calibration setting from Rtings & have tweaked them slightly for my preference. Although he uses a really low back light of 4 & I'm now using 8. For brightness I've used 42-45 but currently using 45. Contrast I've used 93-95 but currently using 95.

Keeping an eye on this thread. Looking to buy the best buy model (6290) for our bedroom. The 55" model. Need help deciding between thst one and the vizio 55 m series. Each are about the same price

ddw2525 08-02-2016 11:06 AM

I just purchased a 55KU6500 last Friday and it is being delivered on tomorrow. Will the settings listed for the 55KU6300 in this thread work on the 55KU6500 or should I try to find settings listed just for the 55KU6500? I will be connecting a PS4, Roku 4, and Xfinity One cable box from Comcast to the TV. Should I use a different setting for each input or the same setting for all three? Thanks in advance for all help received.
