Question Question

My questions are, isn't Dolby Vision supposed to be mastered at 12 bit color depth? Is our Z9D a 10 bit display? I've seen 14 bit being thrown around in the product specs but not sure if that was only on the X1 extreme or how that applies to our displays ...because if our displays are only 10 bit, wouldn't the differences not be that great HDR10 vs Dolby vision? I read all other displays that support Dolby Vision are only 10 bit ...I would assume something mastered for 10 bit such as in HDR10, could possibly be better than Dolby Vision not in 12 bit, any thoughts?

Posted some screen shots for Dolby Vision proof 😉👍🏼

When did we get a dynamic HDR10 update? Did that happen already?

Playing 3D movies with the PS4 Pro on my (Passive)LG 65LA9700,(Active)Sony 75Z9D and my (Active)Vizio XVT3D554SV.

The active shutter 3D of the Vizio was blown away by the passive 3D of the LG which had me a bit worried with the Z9D being active but after testing 3D out...I must say it looks just as good as the LG(which had great 3D IMO )

No. I just saw a headline that it's coming with hdmi 2.1 and it's backwards compatible.

Hopefully someone can elaborate to confirm it can work on this TV.

No way, HDMI 2.1 requires new hardware.

I was so happy without HDR...

The article I saw said it is backwards compatible and up to the manufacturers to implement firmware update.

We have to remember that at 2016 CES they said the 940d was the flagship and then mid-year or so they announce and shortly release the Z9D series. So I would not say 100% that there will not be something else mid-year, since it happened last year.

If they can update DV via firmware for the Z9D, why not the 930D/940D?

I have a 65x900a with passive 3D that when rated just for 3D PQ looks fantastic. I recently demoed a 65e6 at home and 3D looks even better on that (just because of general PQ improvement).

The Z9D 3D PQ is just as good if not better than the 900A and E6, and being a 75" display versus 65" display provides a major improvement to 3D immersion at my viewing distance of ~9'.

I still wish the Z was passive though. Passive glasses are much more comfortable to wear through one or two movies and don't break down/fail.

I wonder just what is this Sony's rep rationale? Because they didn't build it like their $30k monitors? Highlights won't be as bright? The motion processing/upscaling can no longer be used as an excuse after all. I think I'll wait for the inevitable comparisons to arrive and in particular the shootout to get to the actual truth. It would be idiotic to intentionally cripple the PQ of the OLED product to keep a halo on the LCD. If they keep LCD pricing above the OLED (at equivalent size), they're going to have be awfully convincing to keep that narrative afloat. I would be very surprised if the 77" OLED is priced anywhere near the 75" Z9. Their original claims of the Z9 still remaining the flagship will then also look suspicious.

Maybe the rep is mistaken about the Z vs. OLED? The Sony press release refers to it as "The new flagship XBR-A1E BRAVIA OLED": https://blog.sony.com/press/sony-ele...vels-contrast/

The Sony websites in AU and US list the Z9D at the top of the pile.

http://www.sony.com/electronics/tv/t/televisions
http://www.sony.com.au/electronics/tv/t/televisions

I also just noticed that on the AU site they are not listing the 930E/940E, just the existing D models.

On the US site they list both.

I think it has to do something with the X1 extreme, I thought Dolby Vision required a System on Chip but perhaps they had planned for this update, from reading it would take a firmware update to get Dolby Vision even on the E series models.

Nope, the Z is still the king of the hill, mate.

He was very specific, he repeated several times the Z was Sony's flagship for this year.

With Sony joining the DV boat, we might have a winner here. Two big players have embraced the format, with Samsung being the only one that publicly refuses to do so. I wonder whether Panasonic will be the next to follow.

I notice when turning the tv on after it being off...It instantly turns on.
Which seems like a standby/suspended mode?? Is there a way to turn the set off without it going in this mode?

Could somebody confirm that Z9D passthrough Atmos from built-in Vudu app over HDMI ARC to AVR which is Atmos capable and HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2?

Is it that Sony paid for the Dolby Vision chip and put it in the TV and decided not to label the Z9D as "Ultra HD Premium" this seems really strange to me. The only way the Z9D will get Dolby Vision is if the hardware is inside to begin with. Sony must have some inside news about Dolby Vision blowing up or they would have not included this in the 2017 line. Don't get me wrong i would love to see Dolby Vision added to the Z9D and also Dynamic metadata for HDR-10 but Dolby needs a chip and hopefully Dynamic metadata only requires a firmware update not an 2.1 HDMI Spec. I am also curious if the Z9D will get "Hybrid Log Gamma as well.
