But on a Sony set you want to make sure to coubt the zones that are switched off as the white spot moves by, not on.

Quick quote from HDTVtest, regarding the X940D:

Quote:
Note: Since the local dimming system on the Sony 75XD94 favoured keeping more zones illuminated to minimise blooming or haloing, we counted the number of zones that switched off instead of using the more conventional method of counting the zones that lighted up. To make things easier, you can try counting the number of extinguished zones until you get to halfway of the screen, then double the figure.

Agreed. eurogamer tested this (8/7) article. Clearly one should not buy a Samsung hdr display to play Forza 3 or gears - 175ms lag is massive as in dial up numbers.

With a frame time of 16.6ms one can instantly appreciate how much in the past one is playing. Even at 45 that would make me way more crappie at halo 5

The 400 x 300 VESA mounting holes are not perfectly centered vertically, but they are very close--unlike on the much thinner 930D series, which have the mounting holes on the lower half of the back panel.

As you can see on the attached diagram (pertinent holes and measurements highlighted in red), the distance from the top row of mounting holes to the top of the display is 287.4mm and the commensurate bottom measurement is 251.8mm, for a total vertical back measurement of 839.2mm (the vertical measurement on the front of the panel is 846.9mm, which appears to account for an appurtenance on the center bottom.

I don't think it ever really 'turns off' with content, but it does get very dark.

If I'm not mistaken like my PRO-70XFD their are advantages in response times by not turning off the backlight altogether.

Correct. Sharp's approach reduced blooming relative to LCDs that turned off their LEDs completely. It was generally acknowledged this was a smarter approach than turning off all the LEDs and sustaining more blooming.

That video is the test, there are no zones. It's to test the zones on a FALD set (thus why it's solid black with a moving dot).

I think "alettiere" is correct about the black level of OLED vs Sony.

I don't think The new Sony TV can match the black level of OLED. It can get very very dark but it is still using back lighting. But again, it remains to be seen in a few days.

But if it doesn't crush near black then it kinda equalizes itself. I'm still waiting on the price to drop on the 65.

Best buy in Madison is supposed to have one in about 9 to 12 days on display.

Can't wait for your impressions. I have the E6 with about 18 days left to return. I'm most likely gonna exchange for the Z9D but I'm waiting for impressions from people like you and Vincent Kompany who are both going from the E6 to the Sony. Vincent gets his tomorrow so we will hopefully have some solid impressions to check out this weekend.

Tomorrow is my last day in return window of my c6. Probably goes back tonight, decompress for a few days back to my VT60, and then re-evaluate. A new TV might just be better off as a 2017 move. Maybe the z9 comes down in price, or LG figures out the near black noise garbage.

BTW, for those that say the noise is source related and not LG's issue, can you please explain to me why the noise that is present in some of these dark scenese is WAY brighter than the lower black level limits of any good set these days, including LCD, that do not display this issue. If the noise is brighter than what a bunch of other existing tvs can already go down to black level wise I would expect other current sets to show this, where they do not. Not being sarcastic, honest question.

If you have a blank screen on OLED in a pitch black room, the TV looks as if it Off.

As long as Z9D looks that way in a completely dark room, its black level matches OLED which is absolute black.
I'm pretty sure the dimming algorithm on they Sony would simply disable the backlight altogether, so you wouldn't gleam anything useful from such a test.

EDIT: I read further, and I see that's not the case with the 940c, so ignore me.

Have you seen the Z9 in person yet? That would seem to be the prudent thing to do before making the leap. My good will was used up at Best Buy looking for the pixel-perfect and mythical perfect uniform OLED display.

Just need to know about the blacks on this set. How do they compare to OLED blacks? With several of the OLED owners trading their sets in for the Z's hopefully we will know soon.....Want a new set by Labor Day.

The brightness thing is not quite as important to me coming from a ZT60, which doesn't get above 100 nits, so any new TV is going to be brighter than that.

I'm more concerned about how the blacks are maintained next to highlights, i.e., how effective is the dimming algorithm, i.e., the control of blooming especially with HDR specular highlights, i.e., are thousands of dimming zones enough?
