That switch is also available in action menu 3D section.
Incoming 3D signal from HDMI switches the Bravia to 3D mode automatically. E.g. when playing a 3D bluray.
The trick with Sony 4K telly is, that you must send it a 1080p signal.
If it receives 4K (even upscaled), 3D mode remains disabled. Also for the menu and remote button.
So its not the button, its the incoming signal format.
Learned it from problems in playing back SBS and OU 3D clips from my aTV 4K. They all used to play fine with aTV 4.
So for 3D, I manually need to switch my aTV into 1080p output first.
Thank you all. This is really frustrating then. Would have to change the HTPC display settings before playing 3D and that would look like garbage. Would also have to disable upscaler on the AVR (I might prefer it's upscaler to Sony's, need more testing) before it passes the signal on to the TV. I guess I'll have to go with using the internal Sony player via USB for all my 3D files that aren't on 3D BR. Oh well. Like everything else in life, nothing is perfect. TV's are no different.

My really old Harman Kardon receiver died and I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-NR686 as a replacement. How do Onkyo receivers get along with the Z9D? I've never done HDMI passthrough with a receiver yet so not sure what I should look out for.

I picked up the tx-nr686 on bf sale. Pretty happy with it so far, particularly the thx sound processing. No major issues with 3d or 4k passthrough to the tv. And no issues with ARC so far, which I was concerned about.

I have been away a while.....on purpose as not to spend more money. I was looking into a possible replacement for my 75 Z9D, and I see there really isn’t much better on the LCD side. I might want avoid OLED for my living room as my daughters are tough on the TV, but I looks like the manufacturers like Sony and Samsung are so in favor of the off angle view that the contrast ratios on the new LED’s suck, especially in comparison to the Z9D. I will see what happens at CES, but so far it seems like any replacement of the Z will have to be OLED for me.

The Shield Vudu app and the internal Vudu app are 100% identical.

Great to hear, thank you! And yeah, $250 seems like a steal for that Onkyo. You have any tips for any kind of hiccups you had or was it pretty painless to get everything working right?

That’s true but still Vudu on the internal app seems a bit brighter than watching it on an HDMI connected device.

Presume you are using the same settings for that comparison.

Yes, they are the same. I've compared the internal Vudu app to both the ATV4K and new 2019 Shield and all three have the same exact settings. Are you seeing something different?

The sound Accu eq setup is noisy and didn't seem to result in great mixing. I'd try it but you'll probably end up manually configuring your speakers (it's also very unpleasant to listen to, leave the room!). I do notice a slight delay in audio, so far mostly when playing media from my xb1x. The Onkyo has a delay compensator that works well, but isn't available on direct mode. You probably want to enable enhanced hdmi. This can be done by holding the Bluetooth button on the receiver and clicking the power button.wifi update took about 10 minutes. Good luck!

Upgradeitis, is the only thing that happened to my Z. Was just feeling the need for a change and hoping their may be a better LED now. Guess I was wrong as this whole thing with lower contrast ratios is going in the wrong direction imo. Maybe time for OLED in my living room.

4k HLG is now working with Thursday Night Football on Z9d!!! Unfortunately, its not working on the native app. Maybe it can be sideloaded from the fire tv stick 4k? Looks incredible. I'm watching on fire tv stick 4k, but it should work on roku devices and 4k only on Apple tv 4k(not compatible with HLG).

I don't use the Vudu app or the Shield. However, my internal Netflix app on the Sony appears to provide a brighter picture than on the ATV4K for DV (identical settings). Functionally, I prefer either my ATV4K or Roku to the Sony's android apps; however, if I want the absolute best picture I normally turn to the internal Sony apps.

Agree. The one exception would be locally streamed rips where Infuse on the ATV4K excels.

The news article I read said that Android Pie was coming to the Z9D. Can't find that article right now. Might not be the first round but I was happy to see our "old" sets still getting software updates.

Never had an issue with audio on internal Disney + app, my receiver (Marantz SR8012) always display Dolby Digital Plus when watching 5.1 stuff so not sure what the issue is.

I use a 6 year old Denon receiver and have all my internal apps audio using 5.1 by using the optical out from the tv into my receiver. I have no issues with 5.1 with any other internal apps (amazon, netflix, espn, hulu)......Not sure why Disney plus is acting up. Like others, when i first start a program it says dolby D for 1-2 seconds then reverts to Stereo....

Disney+ is definitely sending 5.1 to my Denon receiver. I've had no issues with audio, just video wrappers. Many times what is on the description doesn't match what is streamed. I put it down to growing pains.

Please post a link if you find it. I don't mind waiting personally. Oreo was a big speed improvement, so I'm hoping for more of the same with Pie. We can't change the old processor, but the code can always be better optimized for it.

You really should try 3D if you haven’t already.

We don’t own our 75” Z9D anymore and we sometimes we miss 3D movies at Christmas like Polar Express which our whole family loves. Of course there is also The Life of Pi, Avatar, Hugo, Gravity, The Martian, Jungle Book, Passengers, The Peanuts Movie, Ready player One, Star Wars, The Walk , and my favorite—— Titanic! While the 4K UHD versions when available are great, they just can’t match the 3D versions in a light controlled dark room with Atmos surround sound. Its too bad that 3D didn’t become more successful with more movies released.

I'm happy to report that Plex released a new player for their app. It now does Dolby digital and dts over optical! Disney+ still only outputs 2 channel pcm. It still does it's brief 5.1 then switches. Netflix still does 5.1 as well.

I see you have made the transition from the Z9D to the 77 A9G. Do you feel you miss the brightness of the Z?
