OFFICIAL Sony XBR-65Z9D Owner's Thread [no price talk please]

It's here!!

Just wanted to do a quick post for now. Spent about 15 minutes doing a quick eyeball calibration and the picture is gorgeous. Currently watching the DirecTV 4K feed of the Olympics. Looks excellent.

Upconversion of DirecTV's 1080 signal also looks very good. Blacks are terrific.

I have a lot more fine tuning to do later today, but so far, I'm very impressed with this display. I'll watch a 4K HDR disk a bit later.

Previous display was the Sony 950B, which, other than the lack of HDR, displays an incredible picture. It's very hard to compare to the Z9D from memory, but I think the blacks and shadow detail are better with the Z9D.

I'll try to post more later, but wanted to let everyone know that so far the set is a big thumbs up.

Congratulations. Hope it's everything we have been waiting for. Is Marshmallow installed?

markrubin 08-11-2016 12:55 PM

I'd really appreciate if any owners can measure the input lag and/or confirm if game mode changes the backlight processing or anything like that. :) Looking forward to more impressions.

I second that. HDR input lag would be helpful as well :)

You also might want to add size for those who buy the 75'' Z9D (and the 100'' Z9D) and ZD9 for owners in europe:)

MarkMul1 08-11-2016 01:23 PM

Nice. Enjoy

Weatherstation 08-11-2016 01:29 PM

Congratulation ...

How does the ZD9 handles motion? Soccer or other Sports from HD source ...

Because Motion was not especially mentioned during presentation of the ZD9 ...

Best
Gregor

Great question, I'd like to know as well!

boe 08-11-2016 01:33 PM

So this thread is only for the 65" and we'll have a separate one for the 75" and 100"?

Wouldn't hold your breath for someone to start an owner's thread for the 100".

May I suggest changing the title to Sony XBRxxZ9D to avoid another thread when the 75" comes up ?

kokishin 08-11-2016 01:39 PM

You first posted 50 minutes ago. Have you had a chance to count the number of LEDs? [j/k]

Congrats and enjoy!

upscaleman 08-11-2016 01:43 PM

The guy might have a life outside of answering all these questions....

kokishin 08-11-2016 01:44 PM

[j/k] = just kidding.

No problem at all.

About to go and do some fine tuning.

To answer a few questions...

I don't know what the operating system is (other than Android). I'm an iPhone person.

I have no idea how to measure input lag. I don't do any gaming.

I did put "65" in the title. I would think it's best to have separate threads to the 75" and the 100" set when they are released.

Haven't had a chance to check fast moving images, but so far, no motion issues.

I continue to be very impressed and pleased with the black levels. No blooming with bright white lettering on a black background. The white lettering was very sharp.

I did have the Sony XBR-65X930D for a while at the beginning of the year, but returned it. It wasn't nearly as good as my 950B. This set is definitely a keeper.

Extensive controls over picture (as those who know Sony are very familiar with). I think these will satisfy anyone's personal preferences as to how they want the picture to look.

Regarding pictures, well, to be honest, with rare exceptions, I haven't found them to be useful to illustrate the overall picture. When I first started up the set, a firmware update was available. During the update, there was white lettering on a dark background. Very sharp with no blooming, but the picture I took was completely unrealistic and would make the set look terrible. If I can take some decent images, I'll take them.

More later.

He was anxious to start an owner's thread, I think he knew what he was getting into here on AVS.

IMHO, I think there should be separate threads for each size. I did put 65 in the title. Maybe it should be more prominent. Moderator should feel free to change it if desired.

Thanks. I stopped counting after 10 :D

Gillietalls 08-11-2016 01:54 PM

Pics even though they don't tell the whole story would be appreciated... I would just like to see how the TV looks.

beerninja 08-11-2016 01:59 PM

Grats! I know you said you don't game but would you mind popping the set in game mode real quick while something is black on the screen so we can know whether or not FALD is enabled during game mode? Also if game mode is allowed during HDR content. Would be much appreciated.

thanks!

davehale 08-11-2016 01:59 PM

Do you know about AustinJerry's initial TV settings? It's a good place to start.

unknownuser200 08-11-2016 02:00 PM

Pictures please.. and for laughs if its all feasible a zone count

I do indeed know about the forum. I think someone else posted he is getting his set Saturday from Best Buy, so he'll be able to help with the questions. Although I've had high end sets for some time and am somewhat knowledgable about this, many of you guys/gals are much more knowledgable than I am.

We should start seeing more owners. I know that Video and Audio Center has sold a few sets and does have them in stock. I have purchased from them for 25 years and I can honestly say they are an excellent company. I am in no way affiliated with them. I'm simply saying this as a very satisfied customer.
