Sony X930E and X940E LED-LCD TVs at CES 2017

The Sony X930E and X940E LED-LCD TVs include the X1 Extreme video processor, making them much better than last year's X930D and X940D.

Any word on peak brightness or color gamut? I wonder if Sony plans to introduce a successor to the Z9D or if they will use the OLED as their only flagship.

It looks like the 2016 ZD9 series will be the 2017 Sony flagship.

I wonder if Sony continues 3D with the X930E series.. I was sure that Samsung, Visio plus LG would bring back 3D in 2017, but word at CES is no.. Bigest reason people bring back TV's to Best Buy is they get the set home and find out 3D is gone! The sales rep said they point these customers over to a Sony TV set..

From what I've learned so far, it seems that Sony plans to keep the Z1D in the lineup for 2017. Also, the company typically does not specify numbers like peak brightness, color gamut, number of dimming zones, or anything like that.

LOL, I promise you that the lack of 3D is not the biggest reason people return TV's to Best Buy. Why you would even think that is beyond me. That is a complete false statement as 90% or more people could care less about 3D.

Sorry if it has been already mentioned, but in what way(s) is the Z9D better than the X940E?

Edit: Unfortunately, for some reason, the Z9D is not available in my region.

One of the reasons is that the 75X940E will have a number of zones, zone dimming, each of these zones has a number of leds in them. Those zones are less than 150. In the 75Z9D each led is a zone, in total 700 or so. That way you will get better blacks and lesser blooming.

The Z9D will therefore have higher max brightness for HDR and finer-grained control over dimming zones (each LED is individually addressable on the Z9D vs 'more than 96' zones on the 940E).

From the info out so far they appear to use the same image processor (X1 Extreme) and will both get the Dolby Vision processor.

I'd imagine they'd use the same Android Smart TV processor, but there are no details there yet.

The Z9D is the better TV, the drawback will be price. If the 940E is released at a price similar to what the 940D sells for now (which is likely) the Z9D will be several thousand more.

The new Sony UHD Bluray player doesn't have DolbyVision listed as a feature out of the box. I was all set to get one of those also to be paired with a 2017 Sony TV. Bummer!

Since the panel supplier eliminated the 3D.......what else could Sony say........I don't think 3D is dead in any of their current projector lineup. This is all so unfortunate as I am just starting to have a bit more time to watch a few movies and want to watch several of my 3D movies that I have not had time for. I just opened the new Star Wars movie and watched the 3D version on my Panasonic 65ST60.......this is the best 3D that I have seen so far........no crosstalk at all. It just looked excellent even though it was "processed 3D".

I still want to know if the 940E has 3D. It is too bad that no one that attended the event thought to ask about it.

The ZD9 will probably have 3D since it is a 2016 TV. Safe bet is that Sony is done with 3D on 2017 TVs..

Those that want 3D in a TV seem to have very few choices. On the other hand pretty much all the projector manufacturers have kept 3D and some have actually improved it (JVC). I suspect something beyond HDR is in our future -- I sure hope so.

I predict 288 ,16x18, (or maybe 224 14x16) dimming zones on the 75 X940E... That is usually the go to move between 100+ zones and the 500-ish ones. I think someone at Sony mentioned approx double the zones from the old 940D.. still a long way from 600+ zones the Z9D have though. And by the time it comes out it will probably be pretty similar in price to the Z9D one.. Z9D would have had a year to drop price by then, a bit strange launching it then. Maybe still a couple of thousand between them though..

I don't think even the E series TVs will have 3D, and the vibe I got from CES is that 3D is being phased out -- LG and I think one other vendor is dropping it from their 2017 models. I've been accumulating them for a while despite not having a 3DTV as a future-proofing measure, just as I recently started buying 4K BDs, so my observance of this impending change was part of what nudged me to finally pull the trigger on a Z9D. Looking forward to finally watching these 3D movies!

It looks to me like first all 3D TVs and 3D content will disappear slowly. This process started with Samsung and Vizio a year or so ago. This will take a few years. After that there will be at least five years with no 3D for TVs. What happens after that we do not know. 3D might bubble up again at some point..after 2030 or so i think..
