Root the uMax85

My TV is primarily used to display stuff from my TiVo Bolt, my AppleTV 4K and my Samsung Blu-ray player. So I don’t have much need to tinker with the TV itself or use its installed apps, but I do like to know how stuff works.

After a bit of study of the inner workings and hidden mechanisms of the uMax85, and help from XDA Developer dipcore and others, I have successfully gained root access.

You may remember dipcore as the guy who came to the rescue of mfish234 early last year when his TV was misbehaving. LetvUpgrade938_4g.bin, which is discussed elsewhere in the Forum, supports both US and Chinese firmware upgrade (installation) when the TV won’t boot. (He's still sorry for not coming to the US when he was asked to a year ago. He was just very busy with his job and family.)

As rooting isn't for everyone, and to save space on the Forum, I've put complete directions on the following link: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AmsPDHZYIuYrgsk_-zWR7JY8R36MyQ

Enjoy!

Hi tim, what is the purpose of rooting in this tv? Is this just for chinese firmware only so you can install google apps and play store?

Do you happen to know how to make the us tv tuner working while on chinese firmware?

Hi, Rooting, which should work on both US and Chinese firmware (I've only done with Chinese), gives you the ability (if you know what you're doing - I'm not in that category just yet) to modify system internals and get rid of bloatware. Figuring out the TV tuner is something I'm looking into. Still very much a work in progress, and there are hopefully much smarter folks than me out there.

I think it more benificial in chinese firmware due to bloatware vs. us firmware. And yes.. im still waiting for someone to port the tv tuner in us firmware to chinese firmware..

I still think it would be awesome to just light up Dolby Vision features in US firmware. That’s the only reason I would go backward.

Thanks TimDugan for your valuable input and continued support and progress for the umax85 TV.

Hopefully we can reach to a point to enable Dolby vision on US firmware or remove that stupid startup advertisement on the Chinese firmware. That would be awesome

why did you go back to the US FW. You lose Dolby Vision or is that not important to you

The link doesn't work for me. I went to the LeEco website with their list of firmware and just saw

6.5.064S 2018-03-27
6.0.059S 2017-11-02
6.0.057S 2017-06-08

Good question. Main reason is that with US FW my wife can simply use TiVo remote to watch TV. With CN FW, it's not as simple (I use a Harmony Hub). Also, streaming HDR is generally good enough for me. If I was watching UHD disks I would want Dolby Vision.

My panel is dying. Glad I bought the SquareTrade through Costco. I just started a claim today. This was a great tv back in Nov. 2016 when I ordered it. Lets see how ST treats this panel failure.

Well after a little bit of back and forth communication, phone calls with Squaretrade, they approved a Sony XBR-85X900F. Of course they wanted me to accept a non FALD replacement but I politely declined. Then they offered me the 85X900f. My warranty will continue through most of 2021. Best $99 I spent. I usually don't get a extended warranty, but glad I did.

I tried again and this time it worked. Where did you find this firmware? It doesn't seem to be on their official site.

I found that by going to http://bug.letv.com/cn/download/tv and entering the wired MAC code for the TV in LOWER CASE, no “:” between the hex characters.

Hi, I haven't tried. With the CN firmware I just leave it running and turn off the screen when not in use. That avoids the boot delay and accompanying add.

Question about switching to CN firmware. I'm thinking of getting the Apple TV for dolby vision and run it in forced mode through that. Does HDR continue to work well on CN with other inputs? I have a Fire TV, an Xbox One X and a Shield TV. So all those devices could be on separate inputs as long as HDR still works well with those.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I run everything through a single input (receiver) but it pops from Dolby Vision to HDR to standard just fine depending on source.

I have a harmony remote switching to particular picture modes when the source is switched.
Movie for 4K
Game for Xbox
Custom PS4
Apple forces DV no matter what mode it’s on.

All good.

CN Software Update?

I notice that eUI 8.0.080S_0412 update software has been pumped out to some LeEco (LeTV) X4 boxes. Has anyone running CN firmware (I'm not at the moment) checked recently for an update?

I just checked here: http://bug.letv.com/cn/download/tv

It's not available yet.

Right, not there - but showing up OTA on X4 boxes. Not there (on line) for X4 boxes either. The one I've seen is for 3G RAM boxes, not for 4G like the uMax.

Loaded up CN firmware (6.5.072S_0715) and checked for online update. Not there. Still prefer HRD over DV so going back to US firmware (5.8.056S_0420). Of note, I recently received an email from Apple requesting additional info on a bug I submitted long ago about Dark Dolby Vision with the Apple TV 4K. Maybe there is hope to be had.

Looking at comments online in China, not much good being said about the eUI 8.0.080S_0412 update. Still Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) (SDK 23). Described as "ugly"

From the Official Announcement:

EUI-TV update: 8.0.080S
Le Rong Super TV, EUI8.0 dress up upgrade, light up the family's good life.
1, for you to create a standard for each family member: standard, parent-child, simple three modes, Press the up button at the top of the desktop, enter a negative screen to experience.
2, the new upgrade to find video desktops and application desktops, the content is more abundant.
3. Optimize the overall frame and layout of the desktop, and Adjust the search portal to the top left corner of the desktop to make it easier.
4. Add the "My" section in the upper left corner of the top of the desktop.
5. Optimize the overall performance of the system and the overall interaction And visual details of the desktop to make the use smoother and more natural.
More exciting, etc.

Will wait for something else.

So my experience has been different with SquareTrade so far. Due to vertical banding they have approved a replacement but have offered a LG 86UK6570PUB (not FALD) then after a "manual review" they came up with the Sony XBR85X850F (also not FALD). They have said the 850F is their best offer. What did you end up saying to them to prompt the XBR85X900F replacement offer? That seems like its really the only AndroidTV with FALD in the ballpark of comparable specs to the LeEco uMax85. May work on trying to be reimbursed but the agents are starting to get pushy in try to get me to accept a non-comparable TV.

Bricked!! Tried modifying recovery software and messed up. Obviously too much time on my hands!

TV just sits there with little blue light slowly flashing, unresponsive to all commands - key presses.

Tried connecting via UART, no joy.

Time to look for a replacement motherboard. Anyone out there with a junked uMax85 that the motherboard could be pulled from?

Are you sure it is the motherboard? Have you reached out to dipcore or looked on the russian discussion board, 4pda, for help?

Not bricked! Tried one last attempt at connecting to UART and had success. It's still talking to me! Dipcore and the 4pda board are what got me this far. Now to figure out how to get proper firmware loaded without doing further damage.

For what its worth, found a source in China for motherboard if needed. $300.
