Welcome Owners and prospective buyers of the 2016 LeEco UMax85.

Hats off to @thomasfxlt from whom I've "borrowed" the organization of the information here. This is my first ever Owner's thread but I really like his and I hope he doesn't mind us emulating it here.

OVERVIEW
This thread is for UMax85 models only. It is not for any other LeEco TV models. I made this decision based on several factors, chief among them is that the UMax85 is unlike the other LeEco TVs in most respects. It's FALD, not edge-lit. It's a 10-bit panel, not 8-bit. It supports DolbyVision. In short, we've already seen reports of issues that affect the smaller TVs that don't seem to affect the UMax85 and vice versa, so this thread will focus only on the UMax85.

This thread is primarily an "owners" thread. The goal here is to help each other through the sharing of tips, settings, and other relevant information. If you're here to trash-talk the UMax85 series or to shamelessly promote the virtues of the display you chose instead of the UMax85, you'll be soundly thrashed for your ill behavior and sent on your way by our thread participants. There are plenty of other threads in the forum where folks can comparison shop, complain, disparage and troll.

I'm hoping we get attract regular thread members who spend regular time here helping people with their UMax85 displays. It's important to stay on-topic and not to clutter threads with side-conversations. This is also not a place to start a revolt or talk about the class-action lawsuit you intend to file because you burned your popcorn while you rebooted the display. if you purchased a UMax85 display and have issues, contact LeEco. If you have actionable information to share about how to avoid that issue, come here and share it. We will welcome you. If you have a concern or complaint, state it ONCE and then contact LeEco. We don't censor complaints, problems or suggestions. We do draw a line at doing it repeatedly. If you levy a threat against LeEco or antagonize/insult our helpful members in the process, you'll get reported and eventually banned if you persist. That's the way it is.

LeEco Has Abandoned The U.S. Market
As of 2018, LeEco as a company appears to have failed except for it's China offices and even those appear to be much smaller now. There is no U.S. support for existing U.S. UMax85 televisions. If you buy one, you will not have any way of automatically updating the firmware. The original promises of Dolby Vision support have been abandoned and the only way to get that feature on a U.S. TV is by loading the Chinese Firmware. The Chinese Firmware may have its own issues including the need to change the language to English and a few reports that the black levels are not as good as the US version. Your mileage may vary. Before you try it, read about its limitations in this thread.


A Little History
The UMax85 display was launched on November 2nd, 2016, though only a few sets were available on that date and they sold out in under 9 seconds. Another batch was sold on Black Friday at the same low price (which we will not discuss in this thread). This sale turned out to be a pre-sale and multiple batches were sold in the first 24 hours before LeEco cut off the sale. Both sales were viewed by many as poorly handled by LeEco. While there was much nashing of teeth over LeEco's communication style and other issues, most early adopters found the sets to be worth the wait.

It took over a month for the first few sets to arrive. The first TVs from the Black Friday sale arrived at the end of January, 2017 and - as of this writing - are expected to continue arriving in batches through April. The success of the display can be attributed to its very low price, the inclusion of HDR10 and FALD, and eventual adoption of DolbyVision in a future firmware update. Sporting a native 10-bit panel, it supports a Wide Color Gamut covering over 90% of DCI-P3. It is an Android TV with some of the best hardware available to date and it supports setup via an Android phone or tablet as well as the use of "Google Casting" for playing streamed content.

LeEco User Experience Program
This program is now dead in the U.S. market. If you have issues with your TV, your best bet is to seek assistance in this thread.

China Firmware
The last US firmware version (5.8.056S from April 2017) supports Dolby Vision for content played from the TV's USB ports.
The primary reason to change to the Chinese Firmware is to get support for Dolby Vision over HDMI.

USING ANOTHER COUNTRY's FIRMWARE ON YOUR TV COULD "BRICK" YOUR TV, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO USE.

PRO TIP: Stand close to TV pointing remote at center of TV and hold each button for a good 1-2 seconds.
METHOD FOR LOADING CHINA FIRMWARE
Remember...Changing your firmware is your choice!
If you do this you accept all responsibility for whatever may happen to your TV.



  1. Use a program to format a USB drive as FAT32.
  2. Download the Chinese firmware:

    These recent versions are reported by some forum users to work:

  3. Rename the firmware file to update.zip
  4. Copy update.zip to the USB drive.
  5. Insert the drive into one of the TV’s USB slots.
  6. In the TV Menus, go to System Setting.
  7. Choose General
  8. Choose System update
  9. Choose Offline update
    It will ask you if you want to do the update.
  10. If you get any warnings about the conflict between US and CN firmware, acknowledge and keep going.
    The update will take a while. Please be patient.
  11. If prompted, click “Reboot”.
    On rebooting, the TV enters a startup loop. THIS IS NORMAL and you need to interrupt it with a Factory Reset.
  12. Use the physical ON/OFF switch (bottom left side of the TV) to turn the TV OFF.
  13. Count to 15
  14. Use the physical ON/OFF switch to turn the TV ON and wait for it to enter Standby Mode (red light at bottom of screen).
  15. Use this special remote command to reset the TV: SETTING (Cog/Gear icon), VOL+, CH+, CH-, VOL-, POWER
    The TV will boot up as normal and some advertisement will show up, but it will all be in Chinese. The Google Translate app on your phone allows you to point your camera at Chinese and see it in English.
  16. Choose option 2 to skip the tutorial setup.
  17. Choose option 1 to confirm.
  18. Click “SETUP” button (cog/gear icon) on the remote.
  19. Choose option 1 to open SYSTEM SETTING.
  20. Choose option 3 for GENERAL.
  21. Choose option 2 for TIME AND LANGUAGE on the left side.
  22. Choose option 3 on the right for “LANGUAGE”.
  23. Change “ENGLISH” and you are good to go.
    The menus should all be in English now.


METHOD FOR RETURNING TO U.S. FIRMWARE

  1. Use a program to format a USB drive as FAT32.
  2. Download the U.S. firmware.
  3. Rename the firmware file to update.zip
  4. Copy update.zip to the USB drive.
  5. Use the physical ON/OFF switch (bottom left side of the TV) to turn the TV OFF.
  6. Insert the drive into one of the TV’s USB slots.
  7. On the back of the TV locate the VOL+ button.
    Press and HOLD VOL+ while you use the physical ON/OFF switch to turn the TV ON.
  8. Keep holding the VOL+ until you see the screen turn on and a progress bar is displayed.
  9. Release the VOL+ button.
  10. Wait for the update to complete and the TV to reboot and display the LeEco logo.
    This will take a bit of time as it's flashing the full firmware.
  11. Use the physical ON/OFF switch (bottom left side of the TV) to turn the TV OFF.
  12. Remove the USB stick.
  13. Use the physical ON/OFF switch to turn the TV ON and wait for it to enter Standby Mode (red light at bottom of screen).
  14. Use this special remote command to reset the TV: SETTING (Cog/Gear icon), VOL+, CH+, CH-, VOL-, POWER


Remote Control

If you have a Logitech Harmony remote, several owners have been working to get theirs working with the UMax85.
@Arm3n started a thread in the Logitech forums and another in the LeEco forums.

Logitech seems to be making headway on this as well.

@Arm3n also updated his workaround after the April firmware update.

In addition, @daniel17693 posted this regarding his remote control experiences.


ARC Information
The UMax85 supports ARC. The ARC feature does not return all types of audio to your receiver.


How can I check for HDR Signals?
The UMax85 supports HDR. When you switch to an HDR source, the TV briefly displays "HDR" in the top left corner. If you miss it and you want to know if the signal you're watching is HDR, you can check this in the Picture Settings. The normal picture menu lets you choose between different "modes" such as Energy Saving, Standard, Game, or Movie. You can use this menu to define unique settings for each mode (e.g. the brightness, color, and other settings).

When the TV enters HDR mode, it hides the normal picture modes and shows the HDR mode. You can edit the settings for this mode just like you do the other modes, but only if the TV is currently in HDR mode.

To open the picture menu, press the gear button (middle button at the top of the remote). Choose Picture. If the signal you are watching is HDR, you will see "HDR" mode instead of one of the normal settings (e.g. Movie).

3D Glasses
The UMax85 supports 3D and comes with 2 pairs of active 3D glasses. It is Active 3D, rather than passive. Extra glasses from LeEco are not currently available in the USA and as of 6/15/2017 there is no date for their release.

The glasses are LBTN10 models. Some Chinese websites such as YOYCART have these in stock for $10 to $20, but the shipping from China is expensive (~$30). If you have any Chinese friends or co-workers, you can ask them to buy them in China and bring them back.

I bought 4 pair of glasses this way and it cost ~$44. The glasses came individually wrapped in thin cardboard boxes and bubble wrap. Each box was sealed with a LeEco sticker. Inside the boxes, the glasses were exactly the same as what comes with the TV - each pair wrapped individually in a foam bag and the lenses covered by special lens protectors. The glasses themselves work great. I even bought a little case on Amazon to hold them and keep them dust-free. My friends brought the glasses back in their luggage, no problem. They offered to get more because they are easy.
I'm happy to order more this way if anyone wants them. You just have to be patient because I can't predict when they will travel.

The Official LeEco UMax85 Wall Mount
The Quick Start Guide mentions an official TV Mount for the UMax85. This product is now available for $30 on the LeMall web site.

This is a very basic flat wall mount with no ability to change the angle at all. If you don't need to adjust your wall-mounted TV at all, then this is a good product at a fair price.

If you need something more flexible, there are some articulating mounts out there. I'm currently using this 2xHome mount which I got from Amazon for $55. It holds up to 176 lbs (the UMax85 without feet is just under 150lbs). This mount tilts up and down 15 degrees. It can swivel left and right for a total of 180 degrees of motion. It also extends out from the wall about 26" (though I'm not brave enough to keep it extended with my UMax85). It comes with a spirit level you can glue to the mount to help you keep it level. It also comes with all the necessary screws and bolts.

Panel and Bit Depth
This is a matter of some controversy.
The LeEco answers in their forums say that the set has a 10-bit panel.
A few spec sites say the same thing, including the one linked above.

Some people, however, have pointed out that there are very few panels for sale that have the same specs as the UMax85, and all (most?) of them are 8-bit panels with FRC like this one: http://www.panelook.com/V850DK1-QS1 Rev.C4_Innolux_85_CELL_overview_26685.html

For now, unless LeEco confirms one way or the other, we will have to wait for someone to crack one open I guess.


TROUBLESHOOTING

CEC / ARC issues
STATUS: Open issue
Some users are reporting that CEC is working correctly after Firmware 0321.
Others are reporting that the TV forgets the EXTERNAL SPEAKER setting.

HDR handshake
STATUS: Open issue
Some users are reporting HDR Handshake issues where HDR sources are not recognized as HDR by the TV.
LeEco has acknowledged this and promised a fix in a future firmware.

TV's NetFlix App is grainy
STATUS: Open issue
Some users are reporting that the native NetFlix app has a grainy/noisy picture in certain shows including Iron Fist.

External NetFlix App is washed out
STATUS: Open issue
Some users are reporting that the NetFlix app in other devices such as Roku has a very washed out picture, particularly on HDR content.

Menus for TV Settings make calibration difficult
STATUS: Open issue
While not technically a bug, this is definitely a design issue. The menus for settings cover a significant portion of the screen and require multiple clicks to enter and exit. This makes it very difficult and time-consuming to adjust settings while looking at test patterns.

Here is the LeEco Support thread regarding this issue. I've replied on that thread with a design for a simple calibration menu. If you want a better way to calibrate, please let LeEco know that you want a calibration menu.


RESOLVED ISSUES

Network Issues
Wi-fi and ethernet seem to be mutually exclusive. If you activate ethernet, you need to turn turn off Wi-fi.
STATUS: RESOLVED. It's a feature, not a bug.
FEATURE IDEA: It would be more elegant to prompt the user with this message when she attaches an ethernet cable: "Wi-Fi is still enabled. Would you like to use the Ethernet cable instead?"


Blue Blob on Screen
STATUS: RESOLVED. Turns out this was caused by something pressing on the screen.
@hql37 reported a blue blob on the UMax85 screen:

@hql37 reported that he tapped lightly on the affected area and the screen became "unstuck" and the blue blob went away entirely.
PRO TIP: Be very careful not to press directly on the screen. Soft touches only.

FALD Issues
STATUS: RESOLVED.
UPDATE: This issue was fixed with the April 4 firmware version _0321.
There is an issue with FALD settings not working correctly. This is being discussed in the LeEco forums here: http://forum.le.com/us/index.php?threads/umax85-fald-doesnt-stay-on.4679/
The issue that the Local Dimming setting does not persist after the TV is turned off. The menu still shows that FALD is turned on, but it is not actually on.
WORKAROUND: Flipping the setting to Off and then back to On corrects the issue.
LeEco support is now saying they expect to see this fixed in a firmware release in February 2017. LeEco has received reports and logs from several of us but more logs can still help. If you are having this issue (or any other software issue), please sign up for the LeEco User Experience Program (see above) and submit a ticket with your logs.

I’m not sure how to post this . This is how to adjust power and umax 85 volume with the Comcast cox remote. Follow their setup remote instructions. When it asks you do you want to control your tv. Say yes. It the shows alpha codes. Select L. Then select additional brands. Leecco is listed their. Select it and voila .it works.

Legoland, thank you for setting this up. Where did you find that the display is a true 10 bit rather than an 8 bit with FRC? I still have not heard anything regarding delivery of my set. I am just somewhat patiently waiting. Are you thinking of getting your set calibrated? Would love to see the set if that was possible.

I based the 10-bit panel info on the Spec web site I linked above. (http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/f2997e9)

I am thinking of getting it calibrated, but I thought I'd try my hand at DIY first. See how far I can take it myself. If I get it calibrated, I'll be sure to post the settings here.

Congrats on finally receiving this beast!

Feel free to bring over my Harmony Remote setup posts. Also, do let us know if you're experiencing the same FALD non-stickiness issues a bunch of us are having - either way, would be good to post the LeEco forum links here regarding the issue.

P.S. Set to Movie mode, and set to Contrast to 75. Everything else was pretty spot on after my DIY calibration.

Still doing great for me picture wise.

Some issues I have though are with either Android TV, LeEco's implementation or the apps.

Kodi bogs down and have to force stop once in a while.

YouTube sometimes shows an empty YouTube screen. Normal YouTube home page for example, but no videos. Just blank red screen with the magnifying glass only in the upper left.

YouTube notifications keep popping up. I turned them off but they still show no matter what I am using.

Some other apps just won't start at all. Did reinstalls and same results. It is hard to imagine multiple apps being bad especially if they are made for Android TV.

Does anyone else have network connectivity issues? I have connected the TV via Ethernet, and, separately, WiFi. But in both instances the TV will lose network connection after I have been accessing the internet through the TV's apps (from 15 mins to an hour).

Its very frustrating because I have to turn the TV off and back on again each time.

Notably, when I switch to the same apps on my PS4, no connectivity issues (and I have never otherwise experienced these issues).

I have not had this issue. When I first went through set-up I connected to wi-fi. Later I ran the ethernet cable and I found I had to disable the wi-fi to activate the cable. I might be wrong about this, but it's possible that your TV is still using wi-fi and not using the cable at all. Try turning off the wi-fi and then activate the ethernet connection. Also, the ethernet activation is not instantaneous. It take a little while (1 minute?) for the DHCP and network handshaking to finish. Once it does, I get very fast speeds, though I haven't downloaded the SpeedTest app yet to check it.

Looking at the specs for the Innolux panel that we think the uMax85 comes with, it looks to me like the active 3D technology is a polarized system, similar to what Vizio is using. That would result in less expensive glasses, when they become available (And maybe Vizio glasses will work too). This is generally called passive 3D, so LeEco's reference to active 3D doesn't track, but there is plenty about the uMax85 that is not known!

If any of you encountered a problem getting your Eco-Pass activated, I'd like to hear about it.

In my case, I never got an email regarding the DirectTV code.
And during my initial TV setup, I was not prompted to activate the EcoPass. Nor was I offered a choice between Points and the DirectTV offer (something that is supposed to happen right after you log in, I believe.)

Ok, I have been told I am in batch 4. It is expected to arrive February 17. I guess plus another 7 to 10 days at least. I have seen no changes to my order details. But.....
This is progress.
In batch 4 as well. Apparently a few minutes difference in order times equates to a few weeks difference in delivery.
I have been told that batch 4 tvs arrive to the warehouse by Feb 17, then add few more days for courier pickup and transport which results in an early March home delivery.
The CSRs nor the escalation team have any control over the delivery schedule. You'll just have to wait it out and pray that the tv is not defective.

I realize this is the company's first entry to US customers, hence more the reason to make a good first impression. I think they blew it. This is the one and only only purchase I will ever make with LeEco, and will strongly advise my f&f to stay away.

So, as far as I can tell the LeEco account is the same as your LeMall account. I bought a 55" model the same time I purchased the 85". When I got the 55" I was prompted to enter all of my data and it sinked the TV up to my account. When I got the 85" it did not take me through this process. When I went through it the first time it asked me for a credit card. I skipped this. I did not get the Directv offer when I set up the 85". Not a big deal to me because I already use the Directv service. It definitely appears that there is an issue getting the free service.

Hey guys,

Expectant owner.... don't know what batch or anything.... not TOO worried, since people seem to be getting sets. I do have a question about dimensions. How far in from the edges are the legs? I'm thinking about building a stand for it, and would like to know what is the least length I can get away with.

Hey Russs,

The legs are actually right at the ends of the TV. I hung mine on the wall, but if I wanted to use the legs, I'd be making 2 pedestals, one for each end.

The TV is about 170 pounds with the legs, so stability and strength are paramount. I tend to over-engineer when I build, but here is how I'd do it:
1. Build 2 pedestals, 18-24" square, at the desired height.
2. Use 4x4 posts at the corners with 2x4" cross-supports notched across the legs and bolted tight, 2 bolts per connection.
3. Top it with 1" plywood.
4. Cover with black fabric.

Now buy/build a cabinet that will fit under the TV and between the pedestals.

So here's the reason/response on the EcoPass issue...

Hi there. We've identified this as a database issue. It appears a small number of TV's were not properly recorded in a database as having membership benefits. We're working on updating these TV's in our database. As soon as the update goes through you'll be able to claim your membership benefits, including EcoPass and also either DirecTV Now or EcoPoints.
Good to know they've identified the issue. Hopefully we will get this resolved quickly.

Just got mine today. I am elated. Still trying the figure all of the setting out. The picture settings and hdmi settings take a bit. I also cant get my optical cable from the tv to work with my amp when I watch something from the tv vs DTV or my XBOX. I am thinking of having my tv professionally calibrated since it will be a pain for me to do I think. Still trying to watch HDR but 4K looks awesome.

Received my Umax85 a few days ago just in time for the Super Bowl. It is currently sitting on the floor as I decide whether to mount this monster on the wall or have it sit on a low profile cabinet. Either way, the picture is incredible.

Sorry if this has been asked before but has anyone tried to do any calibrations? If so, what were your adjustments to the factory settings? Out of the box, the picture seemed a bit bright with slightly oversaturated reds but it could just be my old eyes. Just wanted to have the best picture I can for the SB party.

thanks for starting this!

i just got my umax85 a few days ago and everything seems to work fine except i can't seem to to use digital audio out. i'm using the optical cable that came with my sonos playbar and the sonos tells me it is properly connected to the tv, but the tv doesn't allow me to change sound output to digital audio out - it just allows me to choose the tv speakers.

anything i should be doing differently?

Hey Patrick,

There is a little quirk in the audio settings that may be interfering.
Start by opening the audio output settings:

  1. Press the Gear icon button on the remote.
  2. Choose the Audio icon.
  3. Choose Output.

The three Audio settings under Output are interdependent as follows:

Speakers = TV speakers
Digital output cannot be changed
External surround sound system cannot be changed

Speakers = External speakers
Digital output can be set to PCM or Auto.

IF Digital output = PCM
External surround sound system cannot be changed

IF Digital output = Auto
External surround sound system can be changed


Not sure if this helps. It's just something I noted while messing with my own settings.

So to use the optical out of the TV to the AMP if I want to use the netflix app on the tv or any other app on it I have to have the TV set to


Speakers = External speakers
Digital output can be set to PCM or Auto.

So does mean that it will send the sound to the AMP? Will this automatically shut the TV speakers off full time then correct?

I'm still waiting for my Optical cable, so I don't know for sure. My assumption is that the TV shuts off the internal speakers.

I am a relative novice to the AV enthusiast game. With that being said, I am confused by the local dimming on my uMax. When the local dimming is "off," I have very little/no halo effect, but screen uniformity issues. When local dimming is "on," I have a more uniform screen (looks less dirty) but there are significant halos around all bright objects, especially white text on a dark screen.

I thought local dimming was desirable, in large part, because it minimized halos. Are other people having this problem?

I have noticed this exact same thing, but haven't paid much attention to it yet because I haven't had time to calibrate my set. If anyone has ideas on what we should expect to see, I'd like to hear your input as well.

:confused:I just received an email from LeEco that says my TV will be shipping in early March. This is different than I was told in an email 5 days ago where they said the TV was in batch 4 and would be in the US around February 17. This continuing uncertainty and delays is getting frustrating. I have no idea when the TV will actually be at my home.:confused::confused::confused:

I'd really love to know this as well. I'm debating between the two (Vizio M80-D3 & uMax85). If I happen to receive one of the $500 discount codes via email in the next couple days, I'll likely pull the trigger but the M80 is regarded as a pretty solid TV for the size/price. If anyone has personal experience with the picture quality between the two, please share!

Could someone who chose the directv now service say what level of programming comes for free, is it the basic Live a Little. Could someone with the EcoPass free 1000 points say what that gets you - how many new releases or what else? I should be getting my TV in a couple of days and I'm still undecided which one to pick.
