Oh, interesting. The only thing is that I’m not using the TV app. I’m starting the movie directly from the iTunes Movies app.

EDIT: So I did a bit of research and you’re totally right. Looks like it’s an Apple TV issue that was introduced with 12.3. It’s weird that the workaround of using the iTunes Movies app is not working for me, though. I did could temporarily resolve the issue for a movie by switching back and forth between the TV app and the iTunes app a few times until it stopped flickering.

What a mess, I really hope this will be resolved in the next ATV firmware update.

Have you tried the latest ATV beta? That resolved my black stuttering issues on HDR10.

Tangentially related, but unfortunately there's still no improvement on the dimming issues with DV playback (through ATV). I've had to resort to using the native TV VUDU app (in the few times my iTunes 4k purchases transfer).

That’s good news! I might go ahead and install the beta firmware then. Is it stable enough?

Been running the beta for 2 years now, never ran into issues. It helps when tvOS is a lot less complicated. I suppose you always run the risk of something going awry, but the beta updates are frequent enough it’s never bothered me.

I reported this issue to Apple awhile back and got a response in June that they could not reproduce the issue.

I went back and forth between Sony Netflix and Apple TV Netflix; if there is any difference, it is subtle and will require test patterns and a spectrometer to isolate. We definitely did not see “way too dull” and “definitely too dull” as the Reddit posts say. Black is black on both. I double checked that the Sony TV is on the latest firmware (v6.5805), used HDMI 2 and reset the picture settings to default. We watched the opening scenes of “Marco Polo: One Hundred Eyes” which go from inside darkness to outside daylight. The TV professed to be in Dolby mode. Thank you for your feedback.

How did you get in touch with them? I'll give it a shot as I've been testing this for a while.

They should test on the same source as to remove any variables. A simple switch between DV and HDR10 on any of their iTunes movies would yield the required results.

Crazy to me no one has worked on this when the problem has been reported for so long.

I reported it on their bug reporter page. They’ve since replaced that with the feedback assistance app, so if you are running the beta you should be able to use that.

Installed the new July 2019 update with no issues. Everything seems to be running well. Hoping this set gets Android 9.0 or 10.0 as well.

Here is the download site for the USB update and instructions for North America. You could also try and update from your TV but it could take weeks or even months to get it.

You can download the self-install update file (v6.6520) from the Sony x930e support site here.

Be sure to check your model number against the list at the very top of the page before you download and install the update.

Complete instructions for performing the update are on the site. Note that this is a self-install update. You'll have to get the update file onto a USB flash drive and plug the drive into one of the USB ports on the rear of the set. If you've done these first steps correctly, the TV will automatically recognize the update file and give you the option to proceed.

TVs: Sony XBR65X930E (2017), v8.0.0 (6.6510) / Samsung UN50JU7100 (2015) w/ IA02 panel, sw v.1530.1
AVR: Yamaha RX-v581, sw v.2.65
Speakers 5.1.2: Polk Audio RM6750 (surround) + Pioneer SP-T22A-LR Atmos height

Messed up my 930e screen and need help

We just moved from Houston to Santa Fe, about 900 miles. I packed the 930e carefully in its original box and it was placed in the movers van. During the trip it went through ambient temperatures as high as 109 deg. F. Must have been a lot hotter in the van.

When I opened the box I found that the plastic bag around the set had been pushed out of the way by a piece of stickyback foam and it had left a layer of adhesive about 6"x 3" in the bottom right of the screen. It must have happened when we lowered it into the base foam mount. The heat probably melted it on to the screen.

Now the stupid part. No excuses.

I tried to remove it with Goo Gone and a microfiber cloth. It removed most of the glue alright, but left a distinct matt smudge on the glass. My wife went ballistic on me when she saw what I'd done so I stopped immediately. So how do I get rid of the smudge, or have I damaged the coating permanently?

It is not visible when the set is on, so there's that, but looks like crap when it is off.

Glad to hear it did not damage the finish when watching content. I would try dish soap and water (several times if one is not enough) before you try anything exotic.

From the product description the stuff looks like something we used to use in the auto industry called Orange. It's very acidic but works fine on window glass carpet and the like. Problem with TV screens though are anti reflective coatings on top of the glass screen. It's why we never used the stuff on windows with aftermarket tint. I'd try a micro fiber cloth soaked in some soapy distilled water. Not a lot and move in a light circular motion around the affected area. Follow that up with clean distilled water on a cloth and dry accordingly. That's about all you can do but unfortunately the coating is probably going to stay permanently discolored.

So did the update over the weekend. Monday had to pull the plug to get the unit to turn on. Today had the same thing happen again. Hopefully it's not a new issue.

Turned on my 930E last evening and was notified that the update was available, installed without any problems. I run my set through a Sony AVR1080 7.2 home theatre with multiple devices including ATV 4K and so far no issues. I like the new Android, feels snappier.

It's always better (and easier) to get it automatically like you did. I usually want it right away so the USB route works better for me. Yes, the new Android OS is much quicker.

I normally download it via USB as I frequently go over a month before my TV gets updates. This time I already had installed 6.6510 so I didn’t bother downloading 6.6520. I got a notification today that my TV downloaded 6.6520 so I choose to install it. I’ll mention it’s easy to miss that notification if you aren’t paying attention.

I guess I haven’t seen the new Android 8 automatic update process. After choosing to install, it said it would do so when I turned the Tv off, but it didn’t actually do so without again prompting if I wanted to do the install now or later. I guess that’s nice, but that’s a lot of prompting. Anyway after the update, the TV turned itself back off, so you can basically start an update and leave and the rest is automated.

On a side note, Sony’s web site now mentions it can take several weeks to get an update after it’s released if you go the automatic or manual check method. It’s about time they did that.

Since a couple of updates ago, the automatic update function on my TV is semi-broken and reports an error unless I run it immediately after restarting the TV.

I would also like to know the answer to this. That remote is so much better than the standard X930E remote, much better layout of buttons, not as close together and just a much sleeker remote overall.

So the tv has now needed to be unplugged and then plugged back in everyday this week except Wed. So looks like I will be doing a full reset in the next few days. Hopefully this will correct the issue I'm having.

Have you tried the reset yet? I hope it works when you do. This is the reason I haven't done the last couple of updates, my 930E works perfect and I would hate to have these little bugs crop up. Someone convince me otherwise please. Lol

I know about the 2 ways to reset. I still haven't done it yet. It's such a pain to redo all the settings. I'll update once I complete it. Thanks

I have been an X930E owner for almost two years and recently bought an A9G. I still have the X930E set up in another room and can provide a comparison between the X930E and an OLED for those considering an OLED as a replacement. The A9G is noticeably better for dark room viewing because of its perfect black levels and lack of blooming, but the X930E holds its own for all other types of viewing. I actually think it is a better all-purpose TV, given its lack of burn-in risk and dramatically higher HDR brightness. The X930E also has better color uniformity, with no tinting, unlike the OLED, which has a slight magenta tint on the edges of the screen, like most other 2019 OLEDs. Both TVs are more than bright enough for SDR content and I don't run either of them anywhere near max brightness.

The main point for X930E owners is that your TV is competitive with the TV that has arguably the best overall picture quality of 2019. I went with an OLED because I could not find an LCD that was significantly better than the X930E (unfortunately, the Z9D was already out of stock by the time I was shopping) and wanted to experience a different display type.

Not sure why But got an update just now for v6.6520, I thought that's what I update last week. So now I'll see what happens over the next few days with the TV not turning on.
