I haven't personally used the Roku but I've heard it's great too. I can only speak to AppleTV, FireTV, WebOS, and Sony AndroidTV.

And that doesn't even touch on all the presumably Android related ticks and eccentricities I've dealt with on this TV -- what kind of TV OS develops a major operating delay just by updating a third party app? The less I have to do with Android and Google the better. But that's just me.

My guess is, in a year or two when Sony and Google drop support for the 900E, those who have come to rely on the built-in apps will either suffer along with outdated apps, or bite the bullet and invest in an inexpensive third party streamer -- or maybe even buy a brand new smart TV if money is no object. The 900E is an amazing display panel which will easily serve me 10 years or more, but I'm not counting on the built-in Android TV OS to fully support more than half the time, if that.
Come on man...the OS is not that bad. Apps load fine, you can adjust picture settings per app rather than per input. I literally have 0 issues with apps...ever.

I don't get HDR with YouTube...but who cares. Netflix is fine, Amazon Video is fine, Vudu is fine, HBO Go is fine...The built in video player takes a minute to load the content from the external drive but it's fine and even plays MKV files without issue. Seriously...Anybody who comes from an apple ecosystem is going to complain about android. But it's not that bad. They updated the "C" series last year to the newest Android 7 update. I'm sure google and Sony aren't going to drop support for this tv in a year or 2...

I have an old Roku, and have no complaints with it. In fact we still use it on a TV for which we haven't bought an Apple TV to access Amazon Prime, since the Prime is not supported on the 2nd Gen. Apple TV. I know a few people with Roku TVs who love them.

Screenshots look great. Have you previously posted your settings? Also, thanks for posting the video last week comparing the 900e to the OLED. I know the camera can't quite capture everything but it was still cool to see in action.

It's still active, and yes four months, not three -- my apologies. 3 or 4 months, pre-paid for a service you want anyway ... what's the difference? When it's over you can even sell the Apple TV if you want! It's a pretty good deal, even if you're not really sold on it as a solution.
I just checked the link to give ATV a try. Here is what I found:Roku

Looks like they’ve finally switched to a different promo. Too bad, the ATV box was a great deal. I’ve got an old Roku box and I have no complaints with it. I just can’t speak to actually using one with DTVN. However, I imagine it would work more or less as Iv described with my ATV use. Not sure about the Sony remote handling all functions so as not to need a dedicated remote for it. But I would assume once setup, the DTVN app can remain active such that it’s always ready to go when switching inputs.

The "some picture settings (NOT ALL)" part of the deal is the problem for me. The settings that make HDR look right make SDR look wrong and vice versa when you stay on the same settings preset, so I've begrudgingly configured separate presets for HDR and SDR that I have to switch between manually. I also did a lights-on and lights-off configuration for each source type, so I have 4 settings I switch between depending on lighting and content type. Not ideal, but when you're picky about image quality you do what it takes

Android TV on the TV itself, yes it is disappointing, but Android TV on an Nvidia Shield, different Story, far from Useless.

I guess it depends how long you have been going thru this and is your set dead?

Good news - This is a feature list of upcoming software due in 3 stages this month.

Most of it applies to the X9000e - thought most would appreciate this!

First update due September 12th then every Wednesday after that - this is from a chat with Sony Rep in NZ who sent me this screenshot. Woo!

No sign of an upgrade to the Android interface?

Which of those features do you think will benefit people the most?

What exactly is Football Mode anyways?

Sucks cause most people will have their first experience with it on a Sony TV vs. Shield.

I can't believe they haven't done anything about it through the years. I had a 850C and it was just as bad as my two X900E's.

1000000% agree and it is very unfortunate. Can't blame people for going to a different platform such as an Apple TV, Roku, or a Fire TV to compensate for what this great TV lacks in such as a robust handling of the OS.

Allegedly there's a lot of 'behind the scenes performance improvements' like better remote control response (thank God) and fluid app animation?

Football mode was when Sony were the FIFA Sponsor and catered their TVs to the Football market - paid off in 2014 but not since..

That's mainly due to how good Motionflow has become - X1 4K and the X1 Extreme are similar with the latter being Dolby Vision compatible, slight improvement to reality creation etc

I tried to ask about Android Oreo interface but he was tight lipped - however with Phillips and other smaller brands announcing Oreo support for even models as far back as 2016 with Phillips in particular using the same/slower Mediatek SoC there is no excuse except maybe some unknown legal thing? Hard to say..

Hope that helps!

I've had my two 900Es since November of last year. I use Netflix, Amazon, and occasionally YouTube. I've also done some screen sharing from my Galaxy S8+ and S9+. I watch Blu-Rays through my Xbox One. I've had no problems with any of those apps. I have no interest in Plex or DLNA. If I did have problems with Android apps, I'd use my Xbox. Not saying a Shield is the solution for some people, but either I'm extremely lucky or I just don't run my TV 24/7 to cause it to crap out on me. I've been very happy with my purchase. Just my two cents.

Does your Amazon app display solid black bars on 4K HDR content or, gray bars?

Official new firmware update released in the UK today. No update listed currently on the Sony US site, although it's still early in the day for some of the country.

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/s...icles/00202206

It includes much of what was updated on here yesterday with a couple of additions that may or may not impact the x900e:
  • Improves picture brightness in a specific set of circumstances
  • Improved compatibility with the Home Theatre Control app
  • Supports UHD HDR for BBC iPlayer Live Streaming
  • Updates the YouTube, Gracenote and Web Browser app logos
  • Removes the Media share functionality from a smartphone (MTP function)
  • Removes the PhotoShare Plus function
  • Removes the Football mode Action Menu shortcut (equivalent Picture and Sound [Sports] mode is still available)
  • Removes the marking functionality on programme guide/Content Bar
  • Removes the DLNA Video in the TV menu
  • Removes the 500px application

Sony 75x900e
Yamaha RX-481
Xbox One X | PS4 Pro | Nintendo Switch

No luck here either, I guess I'll have to just live with it. My 5 year old son actually pointed out the left side "light bleed/bar" the other day and said "what's that" during a Peppa Pig episode lol. It annoys me that it's so noticable on light colored backgrounds (light blue, light grey, etc).

I've had light bleed on LCD displays in the past but it was always only noticable during dark scenes. For some reason I find this entire left side "light bleed/bar" on my x900e during light colored scenes way more annoying than light bleed on past LCD's I've owned but it is what it is.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I'm looking at the picture, not the area around it.
Unfortunately, when a bright gray bar stands out above and below a Black scene, it’s incredibly distracting. So try as I might to watch the picture only, the gray bars stand out and bleed into the picture as a result. I doubt you have black bars as this is a bug with Android, but you’ve obviously chosen to live with it. I on the other hand cannot and will not use the buggy built in app.

Can you repost how to reproduce this, so I can try it?

Do I just try watching some movie on the Amazon App? Is there any free movie in particular that I can try?

You said this is with 4K HDR movies. Which one should I try?

Just checking, but does SlingPlayer (the app for Slingbox) work on AndroidTV? I don't have a Slingbox yet.

It doesn't look like SlingPlayer is on AndroidTV. I'd have to cast it from my phone, to the TV.

But just wanted someone else to verify, if they know.
