Well, Chad B finished up today with an SDR, HDR and audio cal. Took about 5.5 hours. Will post charts for HDR and SDR, do not @me for explicit settings, that is what Chad works hard for.

Some bits:

  • The SDR cal I did in Cinema Pro with my Calman setup was pretty dang good and about what I expected. Chad has better stuff and used 10pt and dialed SDR home in Cinema Pro. As I found, if you flip over to HDR and use the SDR white balance settings, it maps over pretty good but he did a separate pic mode for HDR to really dial it in.
  • Put up a pattern with a small zero black box in middle and white everywhere else, MLL was 0.001 fL (better than a VT60) and contrast ratio was 48k to 1, the thing is a beast.
  • Got her dialed in for HDR mode, taught me a few tricks for settings to get the most out of the mode, stuff I never would have thought of. As always great service.

SDR info below. He sacrificed a little on the gamut to get better color checker results, mainly for fleshtones. Keep in mind the before White Balance is pretty good because that is after I used my meter, when I did it, it was real blue.

Question about sound. I have a Denon AVR X3300W. along with my XBR940E. I also have DirectTV. My DirectTV remote. I can push power on it and t.v. and the DirectTV receiver will power on. A few seconds later the receiver will power on and It will say switching to audio receiver speakers. Then I get sound. Sometimes when I do the same process I get no sound. I can do several different things. I can go into t.v. settings to switch sound to tv speakers. Then sometimes that gets me sound thru the t.v. speakers and I can switch it back to audio speakers and then it plays thru that. Sometimes it takes going back and forth between the two different speakers or powering off the receiver to finally get it to come on automatically. What settings should I check? Thanks Brian

Got mine on Wednesday. I went from a cheapo 2012 E-Series Vizio 55" 1080p to this baby.

I expected a great picture, but I am simply blown away by this TV! Paired with my Apple TV 4K, this TV just is... awe-inspiring. AND I haven't done any calibration or tweaks yet (except switch smooth motion off)...

I am amazed by the inky blacks, which leads me to question - how much better are OLED's if this TV can do this well? Wow. Admittedly, my frame of reference might be a little skewed since I've transitioned from such a ****ty TV.

Funnily enough, even though I was all up in arms about the lack of DV on this TV, so far - viewing DV content in HDR10, looks A-OK to me. :P When the DV update does roll in, it will be the icing on the proverbial cake.

Now, back to watching Spider-man:Homecoming.

Hello,

I've been an AVS member for years now and it's that time for me to upgrade my home theater TV to something else. Mainly to take advantage of the Xbox One X I recently purchased and to start watching 4K movies via Amazon and Netflix. I've currently got a 60" Panny GT50 in there and want to go BIGGER! Imagine that! At any rate the 940E is on my short list largely because it sits between the 900E and Z9D and is much cheaper than the Z9D. Plus from what I've read while it does have less zones than the Z9D it puts up a pretty remarkable picture.

Couple questions that I have if anyone can help...How is gaming on this TV? I'm not a "hardcore" gamer but I'm known to chew through some games. Shockingly my GT50 has managed over the last 4 years to not experience any burn in but it does exhibit IR which quickly goes away. I want to make sure from actual owners what their experiences are. I've seen some people return this set because of the motion issues in gaming.

Also, how is the viewing angle in comparison to other FALD sets. I'm "assuming" it can't be any worse than my 2015 Vizio P series....maybe better? Does its size make the the viewable angle better?

Last question, how is blooming? More specifically into the black bars of movies? One thing that kills the immersive nature of viewing for me is blooming into the bars or light bleed.

Thanks!

I too am very interested on recent updates on gaming, specifically 4k gaming. Do you experience any blur from this particular type of gaming?

Hello,

So I had my TV replaced after it came DOA and I am now having an issue where it really seems like I suffer from pretty bad dirty screen effect.

How might I test this? Can other users report?

I do see a pretty noticable color change when a scene pans or changes view points.

I’ve now had the X940e for 5 days, and my biggest complaint is DSE. Overall, this is an excellent TV, though I’m struggling with the vertical banding that shows up in panning scenes. I think it’s been mentioned before that poor uniformity is inherent of these large screens, and varies between panels. Coming from a flawless plasma, I’m a little disappointed. I think I’ll just learn to live with this flaw (and because my store has discontinued this model, I can’t exchange for the same TV).

DSE is a fact but to what degree varies , how is the 940e discontinued seeing it was only released in the spring

The X940e isn’t discontinued. The small electronics chain that I bought it from has decided to stop carrying the model. I have no idea why, but they gave me their last one at a clearance discount - I’m not complaining

Viewing angles are better that what you might have read about.....I mostly sit near head on to the display but they seem quite good.

I too came from an excellent ZT60. I think what you're seeing is not dirty screen effect, but clouding..... something inherent to LED, most noticeable when viewing at an angle, but sometimes visible depending on the color and background of the image on the screen. This drove me crazy at first on my 940E, but it isn't visible at all on my set during normal viewing from my prime seating position. If I go considerably off axis I can still see it on a scene with a solid overcast sky, for example. I stopped worrying about it because I virtually never watch at that extreme of an angle. YMMV :

I suspect it's mostly related to viewing angle which is a known issue with all LCD panels.
It's also possible that the 4 corners will have slightly dimmer whites, but not sure if that is also because of viewing angle.
For that head-on shot, if you back up in your room (if possible) does the difference get less?

Just want to say thank you for those that helped me with my drop out issue with the ps4 pro while gaming, I haven't had the problem since Now I want to get my tv calibrated, however i'm debating on getting new HDMI cables. My buddy who works for AT&T gave me the ones he uses for at work. What do you think?

Hi all. I just joined the club with my new 75” 940e. I have skimmed the 420 pages of posts so likely missed it but can someone direct me to a post# that has settings that many of you use for picture? I know in the Z9 thread D-nice and others have some recommended settings so curious if the same here.

I have the virtually the same setup except with Dish Network. Are you using ARC/CEC? I use a Harmony 650 to control the TV, receiver and Dish. I use two setups, one goes through a soundbar mainly for news, and the other through the receiver for more serious watching. I do not use ARC as in the past its only caused me grief. Unless you're really fond of the DirecTV remote I'd suggest the Logitech. Its inexpensive and easily programmed for just about anything you could need including power on sequence, input selection for your TV and receiver and assignment for which device to use for channel switching and volume.

YMMV :

It's also possible that the 4 corners will have slightly dimmer whites, but not sure if that is also because of viewing angle.
For that head-on shot, if you back up in your room (if possible) does the difference get less?
The banding/DSE/clouding (which ever it is) is fortunately not visible in the majority of content. I took the off angle photo to highlight the issue, but it is still very visible at small angles from center. The darkish bands show up mostly in bright panning scenes with uniform background (i.e. sky shots), or snowy scenes (i.e. ski films).

I think this flaw is a minor trade-off for all the other excellent qualities of this TV. I wont be returning it.
I had originally walked into the store to buy a Panasonic OLED, and somehow walked out with the X940E instead - no regrets!

Hi everyone, any thoughts on the new HDMI standard and how this set could benefit from it?
