I'm having trouble believing that Sony would have just "assumed" that it would work. There is no way that a company like Sony would such a broken testing process.

The rumors I've heard is that someone told them that the new profile firmware had been released to the other vendors. Though it's not been said, it seems quite likely that it was Dolby that told them this. Certainly in Dolby's interest to have this sort of profile out there (one that doesn't require specific hardware support) so I can see them even pushing it.

On the other hand, Sony should have tested the external devices which it apparently didn't do; and they should have been more open in their communications regarding the HDMI compatibility issue folks were likely to run into.

Taking a breath from the DV fiasco, I wonder if anyone could help me out with a long-standing question I have had with these high-end Sony UHD TVs.

Ever since I bought the 940C back in early 2016 (then the 940D end of 2016 and now the 940E a few months ago), I have always been trying to see how I can get a web browser to appear for any of these models. My Samsung TVs have the browser front and center----and they work beautifully! So, how does an Android-based OS not want to expose the browser to the customer?

I have read suggestions of going to the Google store and getting some browser app, but have never found anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have no inside information. The extent of my industry dealings are the limited hardware reviews I currently do for HTF and the extensive catalog of software reviews I did there for years, but no longer. I'm just a shmuck who bought a TV for a specific purpose that was advertised when I ordered it and reneged on before it was delivered. And I've looked past this TVs flaws without ranting on them the way I have this one.

I've made guesses as to motivations of Sony and Dolby here:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-hi...l#post55559876

You can choose to have your own as you like but they are just that, guesses. Mine happen to be based on looking at the long term for Dolby, others may have different angles.

Forgive me if I’m missing it but ATV4 always had DV (albeit with raised blacks) I will feel better about it when I see content playing with the “Dolby Vision” badge on the TV rather than just the ATV menu.

It wasn’t showing dv as an available picture mode until this beta

LOL....well said...not necessarily wrt anything specifically Kadath has said (I don't know as I really haven't been following much of the various griping wrt DV and such here in any great detail)....but just in general. That we all have it pretty good and that these are the issues/problems that get us so upset...well it should all be put into perspective. Bravo on the insight. OK back to grumbling about DV implementation and the various other flaws of this set and wrt Sony in general etc...

Nothing about my story has changed. You can see my purchases on page 11 of this thread. You can see my question about why my Oppo didnt work with DV on like page 64. I'll clean up any real inconsistencies you can find but I don't believe their are any. I preordered this set in January 2017 based on all available information at CES, including Sony's own press release stating this set would ship with DV. They did not correct that until after sets were actually shipping with a footnote in a press release. This set is on sale for $2k below what I paid for it TODAY. It will continue to drop in price. Maybe Apple will have it fixed for me today (I am in preview program), but Oppo wont for months per their public statement, so I still won't be able to view my disks in DV, purchased on day 1 in 2017. I would not have purchased this set without DV, I have been up front about that from the start.

Edit: Here's the first alert I had about DV not working, a month after owning the set:. The day my Oppo arrived and first three DV disks shipped

Apple has apparently already put a Sony Compatible DV profile in TvOS 11.3. DV working on a Sony Z9D.

The movies do indeed play in Dolby Vision and use the Dolby Vision preset on the TV.

As far as the logo in the upper right, that popped up when I switched the Apple TV to that format, since the UI runs in Dolby Vision.

I have another Apple TV connected to my LG OLED and was going to install the beta later to see.

Do you have a movie and scene you'd like me to try?

Thanks. Would you know how I could find that one? I searched through the ones listed and the tools/utils, but did not see one with that name.

The search function wants speech input (not available on the 940C from what I could see).

Well, Geek Squad came out today...looks like I'm going to get a replacement set. I'm set for Monday to get a replacement. It didn't take much to show him the screen uniformity issues I was having. Additionally and after testing different cables, players and inputs....he was perplexed as to why my 4k discs looked dim and dull.

Wish me luck on the new one!

LOL, you are getting a little pathetic with this.
  • Sony said second half of January
  • Here it is, you now have internal apps with DV and a working HDMI device with DV, granted public beta is not here yet but will be shortly (it is Jan 24 BTW).
  • You maintain this is Sonys fault, yet, within 8 days of the release of their FW Apple has DV on their end working with a Sony. Apple just didn't start that FW 8 days ago when Sony's launch happened, they have known about it. If you think Apple started working on low latency DV last week, you are a fool.
  • The question is, why was Oppo in the dark? Who owns the format? Blame them...

But you won't because you are going to hate Sony no matter what they do, and it's getting ridiculous.

Sony just updated my set OTA.

Launched Bosch Season 2 Ep 1 in DV. Looks great so far but I have just a couple issues I wanted to see if you guys stumbled on as well.

Adjusting any settings or even going into the menu is causing the video to stutter terribly.

Advanced contrast adjusted from off to anything makes the highlights glitch and layer themselves on top of the video, adjusts back on its own if you set it back to off and let the video play on.

Are we using cinema motion? At least this first test run; the video panning is not smooth at all for me.

I did switch the color tone to warm, anyone leaving that on neutral? All other processing left 'off'.

EDIT: let the tv play a bit thinking the processor would settle down after the update but this DV must be pushing it hard enough that any menu action is causing the video playback stuttering; either from processor being maxed or the processor tasking away from the network. Maybe these on board apps are just THAT bad...

Tv took update this morning. Wife has no complaints so far but I wont know any setting detail until I get home tonight. Surprised about so little talk regarding an update.

Adjusting any settings or even going into the menu is causing the video to stutter terribly.

Advanced contrast adjusted from off to anything makes the highlights glitch and layer themselves on top of the video, adjusts back on its own if you set it back to off and let the video play on.

I have similar experiences with the Amazon app. That one is especially bad .... Doing anything with the TV menus makes the video shutter.
Luckily, the Amazon app on the just launched ubp-x700 is supposed to be better (and it has HDR, no DV yet though)!

Have you not read the last 20 or so pages? LOL! The update is old news, but I'm glad Sony is allowing OTA updates now. Most of us installed it with the USB method last week.

The search function wants speech input (not available on the 940C from what I could see).
Here’s a screenshot from Google Play. Hope this helps. I’m sure there are better ones but this works.
