I bought the 940 so I could experience the best PQ, but I'm struggling on the streaming side of things as to whether my tivo bolt, the 940 or Shield would offer the best PQ for streaming movies.

I started with internal apps, then switched to a Nvidia Shield for a few months, then switched to an Apple TV 4K about a year ago. The ATV, while not perfect, is easily the best of the bunch for picture quality and ease of use. The Shield was okay, but doesn't produce a picture as nice as the ATV and the user interface is not nearly as nice as the ATV.

Since getting the Shield on prime day, I can say I use it daily and it now supports Atmos, Amazon music and hopefully soon Dolby vision, As for PQ the internal apps are great but the Shield is blazing fast and love the interface, plex ,kodi plus my movie digital copies are all easily accessed.

Does anyone know if Sony added YouTube HDR to the X940E in the Android 8 update ?

Under stats on YouTube it says smpte2084 (PQ) / bt2020 when playing an HDR video does that mean it's displaying HDR ?

Took this picture while playing one of the Sony 4K demos on YouTube. The 2nd pic is of the 8K Yellowstone video. The 3rd pic is of the same 8K video with the Picture Adjustments showing HDR. Hope this helps.

What does current/optimal res mean? Which is it actually displaying? The HDR in the menu is pretty clear that HDR is on which is good news.

A couple weeks ago after my TV updated I started getting the HDR tag on YouTube vids, but it wasn't changing my TV settings. I'm not so sure HDR is totally working with YouTube. I'll have to try it again later on today.

HDR is being displayed, but brightness setting remains at 35. Doesn't HDR mean that the source determines the brightness, and to do that, brightness should be showing set to max, right/

The YouTube app itself hasn’t been updated since Oct 5th, there may need to be an update to sync up all the settings. Remains to be seen!

I haven't received the update either and I'm in no hurry. Doubt I'll update once it's made available... at least for awhile. Something about a 10 foot pole.

How do you get that black box with all the data in it to come up on the screen?

I haven't received a direct firmware upgrade yet and i am in no rush either, considering the outstanding current level of PQ the 940E already has to offer.

Even though i could try to download this new firmware online to a portable USB drive then install it myself, when it comes to firmware updates i always rather do it directly from the source using direct ethernet connection (not WI-FI), just in case of bugs or any other problems during USB transfer.

Sony XBR-940E, Integra DHC-80.2, Oppo 103, Sound Lab A-1 electrostatic speakers,SVS PC12-NSD subs, InnerSound Electrostatic Amp,, Hafler 220 amp, Harman Kardon PA5800 amp, Pioneer LD-W1, Darbee Darblet, DVDO iScan Mini, Nvidia Shield, Yamaha CR-7, Koss ESP/950, Stax SR-40, Audeze Isine 10, etc, etc.

Just so you know, the TV will verify that the file is not corrupted or altered in any way before upgrading (using hashes and digital signatures). You couldn't flash a corrupted file if you tried. The same mechanism prevents you from modifying the firmware in any way.

In other words - it's completely safe.

While watching a YouTube video, click down and pause the video. You should see a similar screen as shown in the first picture. Then click twice to the left and elect More, as seen in the second picture. Now move to the right and select the little bug icon (Stats for nerds) as seen in the third picture. Once selected, you'll get the black box with the data as noted in the fourth picture.

Late adopter

Ordered my very own 940e today from bby. Bargain when reading people were excited when it hit 4400$ earlier this year. Holding my breath though as the set seems to be a bit of a gamble. I remember the day when Sony TVs were like a Mercedes. But I guess both companies were passed by economic realities. Anyhow, I am sure I will have many questions so I thank you experts for all the patience and help in advance :-)

Is anybody else using the Medialight dual or quad model on this tv? Just finally came around to install mine and was disappointed that both USB Outs were powered full time, so I’m not sure how to automatically power the lighting on & off with the tv - it’s wall mounted and I dont anticipate uninstalling it to drop more cable through my wall for a workaround =/

Assuming it arrives safely, I think you'll see why the original hefty price tag as fit and finish are beautiful to look at and touch, turn it on and dial it in and its like woe! what a picture

I don't think you'll have a problem but if you bought it through Best Buy I would probably buy there extended warranty. Pricey yes but if something goes wrong they will try to fix it where Sony will replace it with a 900f. There's not a day that goes by where I don't say what a TV.

I was thinking about that, but I paid for the tv with my Costco Citicard which extends warranty by 24 months. I think I’ll take my chance with 3 years of coverage (knock on wood). I did have an issue a while ago with a Sony 850 that had a broken motherboard, and after Sony sent an technician to try to fix it twice, a call to Best Buy allowed me to load the broken tv into my car, drop it at the local Best Buy and shop for a new TV with the reimbursement. Really a great experience and that is why I bought this TV at Best Buy over amazon.

I have it on mine, love it. Jason (I think that's his name) sent me the IR kit to turn them on with a remote. I just programmed them into my Harmony to come on/off when the TV does.

I think I will pull the trigger on a 75" today. If sitting 10’ away, will I be able to use a 4 seat recliner without compromising picture quality or should I stick with a 3 seater?
