Random question to all who've had experience with extended warranty with Square Trade - Is it worth it?

I read somewhere back about Costco offering Square Trade for $99 (for members) even if not purchased from them. I've got about another week before 60 days has past since I bought my 940E. In other words, I need to act fast if I'm going to do it and would sure appreciate any feedback.

I don't know off hand about the calibration settings, but I've seen them on this site & elsewhere, so google should be able to find them.

How to know if you got a lemon? Watch some movies & if it they look good then you're golden. Don't let yourself go down the road of obsessing over every tiny imperfection that shows up on test screens & patterns, just be concerned that it does a good job of playing a movie.

Cinema Pro is pretty accurate out of the box. It should be good enough for most.

Agreed, I used to lose sleep on the calibrations and best settings for this and that on these TVs. I know that is sacrilegious here but IT makes my life easier without the obsession now. @RichardPryor Try Cinema pro as suggested and ride that wave for awhile just for grins!

I have an i1DPro and did a calibration on the TV. As RTings stated custom with expert 1 is the best start out of the box and I didn't really notice any changes after I made the adjustments. Everything was very even pre-calibration. Blue slightly elevated across the board and red slightly below. It looks great with custom/expert 1 from the factory.

Care to post what your results were and any changes you made? I like to compare with the spreadsheet that was posted a while ago and see if there's any form trends/preferences.

SDR settings

Custom
Expert 1
Backlight 15
Contrast 95
Brightnes 50
Gamma -1
Local Dimming Med
XDR off

Everything else off
I like smoothness set to 1 and Reality creation set to auto. I believe the reality creation is the 4K upscale for 1K content.
For HDR, Backlight max and XDR high.

2 point adjustments. It is a very slight adjustment to my eyes.

Max
-2
-4
+3
0

*** I really like these settings for film but for football and video games I think its just too warm to my eyes. I don't do the 2 point and do Warm instead of expert 1. I throw on some of the extra settings to like true color and contrast enhancer. I just set what I like the best. For film, I want the closest to source intended as possible which would be 65K with not extras which is what I was going for above.

What are the odds we see an HDR10+ update? With our X1E's I know the tv can process it. It's just up to Sony to let us have it. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm gonna send an email to Sony. See what the powers that be have to say.

FWIW and I'm not holding my breath..., when I called Sony Support about the issue that I'm having with FandangoNOW not play 4K on the Android TV app, I also asked him about IMAX Enhanced and not getting any software update notice on my 940E, the tech mentioned that a new software update was in the works. Now, he didn't get specific about what the update was or for what, and he didn't say when it would be available.

^it would be nice if we were to recieve the IMAX enhanced on these, as opposed to hdr10+ To me the differences between DV/HDR10 are very minimal and tough to tell apart...of course when done right.

HDR10+ is the HDR protocol IE chose. DTS being a partner I can see why. Of course there’s other enhancements that go along with the program.

I cant find any literature linking the two. In fact if you go to the IE website theirs no mention of HDR10+ They are definitely not one and the same.

Black level

I was playing with the custom picture mode settings yesterday while watching soccer on Fubo’s 4K stream and I noticed that reducing the black level setting to 45 makes the picture so much better. Deeper colors and no “white haze” anymore that annoyed me on some close shots. I was checking picture settings posted in this thread, but it seems black level is pretty much left to default by everybody and I am wondering why. This was daytime viewing in pretty sunlit room.

It really helps to have a test disc of some kind to set black levels. you need to see the fine gradations of black. then you use brightness and black level together to make you you aren't losing shadow detail, sometimes called black crush.

Yep, set this at your normal viewing time and lighting scheme to fine tune it to your environment...... or if you watch a lot of daytime and nightime viewing, set up two different parameters, one for each situation.

Has anyone had a problem on the 940E with signal loss from a cable box on start up?

Sometimes when I come in and turn on TV, it shows the no signal message for that input. Only after rebooting the cable box will the picture appear. It has never done this with the previous TV.

Other than that I think the 940E is killer on a number of levels. Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am a very recent purchaser of a 940E demo from HiFi Buys in Atlanta. I will be going through the thread more soon. Thanks

I have this issue with my TiVo Bolt connected as OTA. Not sure it is due to the tv though as it connects through a Yamaha receiver. “Solved” my issue by plugging the TiVo in a smart plug that reboots it every 24 hours.

Depends! whats your gamma set at? And all things are not equal from channel to channel, it could've been just a raised black level to begin with

Gamma is set to -1. I think it might look better to me as I don’t like washed out colors. And black should be black and not reflect light in my eyes.
