At some point I plan on getting a calibration tool but would like to know what everyone suggests to confirm that any weird motion blur is turned off. I think it *might* be on but it's also possible these videos I've been watching were actually in 4K/60

Vizio should have an online manual for instructions for its tvs. Also, on this thread's model, I recall some where in the menu that lists HDMI input 1 as the only input for this content. Go to the menu section for the inputs and to the HDMI-1 input for the options. You should see the option to turn on the UHD setting.

BT 1886 Setting - Lower Backlight Setting

Greetings Colleagues,

I have been reviewing many calibration/measuring techniques and one seasoned recommended a BT1886 type of method where the gamma curve on the graph is near 2.4 except around 0% white with a target gamma between 2.1 and 2.2. Backlight setting was lowered to achieve this measurement, with additional changes noted below. These settings are probably better for movie viewing in a dark room environment. Color is a little more vibrant and punchier. Luminance is about 36.9 ftL @ 100% White pattern. Changes are in bold. Gamma graph attached for your convenience.

Color Adjustments on Gamma Graph

Greetings Colleagues,

I have discovered that the 11 point white balance settings can be used to adjust color settings on the gamma graph using hcfr software. After gray scale measurements, I opened up the color measurement graph to see the gamma curve, which in this case was 2.3 with 2.1 targeted near 5% IRE. I also turned on the red, green and blue level colors to see that they were not even in some of the IRE intervals. I then adjusted the individual IRE levels with their respective colors to even out the red, green and blue to equal levels.

I reset the backlight level at 60 to get luminance of 50 ftL at 100 IRE. The contrast setting above 51 does not increase lumance. Measured gamma is about 2.3 and goes down towards 2.1 near 5% and 10% IRE to obtain BT.1886 effect. The settings are below, with changes in bold. Gamma & RGB graph is also attached.

I readjusted the settings to make measured gamma at the high end at 2.3 to give the picture a punchier appearance, and to provide neutral settings for day and night viewing. I turned the Clear Action setting back to ON because it had no impact on the measurements. Luminance is at 51.22 ftL at 100 IRE. The gamma graph with RGB levels is attached. The CMS & CIE Graph Measurements

Greetings Colleagues,

I think that I figured out how to use all of the settings in the color tuner section. Initially, I measured the primaries (red, green, blue) and secondaries (cyan, magenta, yellow) using HCFR software and a colorimeter. After this measurement, I could see that this tv's CIE graph was not matching up with reference points for the standard CIE. I noticed that each point for the standard primaries and secondaries had reference numbers (x,y,Y). If you run the HCFR in continuous mode with the primary or secondary color displayed, you can adjust in the color tuner the hue (x), saturation (y), and brightness (Y) for each color to get close to the reference numbers. After my measurements, I got very close to the reference numbers but not a perfect CIE. I then adjusted the color and tint settings with a blue filter to account for the imperfections. (See the CIE graph attached)

Changes to these measurements do not affect the white balance greyscale measurements for offsets, gains, or 11 point white balance settings. Some minor changes were made to previous measurements for greyscale.

CMS Settings - Blue Filter Not Recommended

Greetings Colleagues,

In looking at the adjustments after using the blue filter method for readjusting color and tint, I noticed that this adjustment negatively affected the secondary colors (yellow, cyan, and magenta), which is probably due to adjusting the color temperature to 8000K rather than the standard D65 or 6500K. I use the 8000K to brighten up the picture for day and night viewing. The greyscale target is still in the white space of the CIE graph.

So I set the color and tint settings to their default values (50 and 0) and readjusted the primary and secondary colors, as indicated below. I did not use the blue filter method this time. Changes from previous settings are in bold.

(Also, for curiosity, I set the color setting to 54 to see the impact on picture quality. The colors were more vivid, but it looked like everybody had a sun tan. These settings are not posted)

Does anybody know if it's possible to resume a video being watched from a thumb drive? If I've watched the first two hours of three-hour movie, I don't want to have to fast forward to get back where I was.

I bought an Apple TV for my e series to watch iTunes movies. Have the exact same setup on my m series TVs but for some reason Netflix won’t play in hdr over the Apple TV! Works just fine on my m series models. It also worked when I had a roku connected. Not exactly sure what’s happening. iTunes movies play in hdr as does smartcast content.

I’ve tried resetting the Apple TV to factory settings and adjusting the video settings on the Apple TV.... I also tried switching the Apple TV to different inputs and no luck.... What gives? Anyone else have this problem??!

The CMS & Color and Tint Dilemma

I have been reviewing the use of the cms and adjustments to color and tent settings. Some of the reviewed materials indicated suggestions from some notable avsforum members that use of the color filter cannot be totally discounted, depending on the display, adding that the blue filter may be used after adjusting the cms. I used the blue filter (after cms) and saw that the color was off. Below is the previous settings with the only change to color.
The tint setting was not affected.

Internal SMPTE Pattern

Greetings Colleagues,

I used Vizio's internal smpte pattern to assess the color and tint settings using the blue filter method, which verified the color setting at 53 and the tint setting at 0. I also noticed that Vizio has field patterns for calibration, something that I may look at down the road to see if the picture settings need tweaking.

The picture looks better to me.

The GCD 75% Luminance/Saturation Patterns

I looked at the internal Vizio calibration tests but the picture did not improve much. At the recommendations of learned forum members, I will set the hcfr software preference for color space to rec 709 (75%) and use the GCD disc's 75% color field patterns to adjust the color settings and report back to you shortly.

The Recommended Settings

Greetings Colleagues,

The recommended settings are the last ones posted on August 17, 2019, with the exception of color which should be set at 54. This is one notch above the balanced colors using the avsforum color pattern with the blue filter. This color should add a little saturation to give the picture some pop without overly saturating colors. The primaries and secondaries are still within their targets for the CIE graph. The tint setting remains unchanged at 0.

I did try using the GCD's disc with the 75% (luminance/saturation) patterns to adjust the primaries and secondaries, but this tv did not work well with these patterns. I also tried changing the power mode, but this did not affect the picture settings. I did read a comment in the forum about the difficulty of adjusting color for a particular Vizio model, but I think it comes down to patience and experience in adjusting these settings. I also tried using the internal "calibration tests" patterns, but these patterns did not work as well as the avsforum rec 709 patterns.

So my recommended change in the settings is:

Color: 54

You may increase this color setting without impacting the other settings, but the picture's colors may become over saturated and the picture may not look that well.

The Sharpness Factor

Greetings Once Again Colleagues,

A long long time ago when hdtvs started coming out, I recall a respected calibrator actually stating that some "sharpness" should be added to the picture and the setting should not automatically be set to zero. With this statement in mind, I thought I would look into the sharpness setting a little more.

The current sharpness setting of 2 is where artifacts do not appear on the sharpness pattern from a "viewing" distance from where the tv is normally watched. A sharpness setting of 3 is the setting where the artifacts are just starting to bloom (where the artifacts just start to appear but still barely visible). With this setting you may get some artifacts but it may not be noticeable. It makes the picture pop a little more, especially with the recent color setting that adds a little more color saturation to the picture.

Recommended Sharpness setting: 3

Re Sharpness

Please disregard the last post regarding sharpness. increasing the setting to 3 doesn't look right to me. You may want to use the sharpness setting to 3 if it looks good to you. Apologies

Had to dig this one out of the grave...

As of lately, I am unable to get anything from YouTube to playback in 4K. I've tried via smartcast as well as the YouTube app on the TV. This was certainly not an issue before. I used to be able to get 4K as well as HDR for years now.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Vizio Reset

Greetings Tattoo:

You may have some options available with some of the technical problems with Vizio TVs. You may want to review the TV's manual prior to attempting anything. One of the options I use the soft reset technique is when, for example, my WIFI doesn't connect with the TV. I do a soft reset by unplugging the TV for at least 10-20 seconds. The TV works fine after plugging it back in. There is also admin reset/soft reset options in the user menu under system settings that may be useful, but I never had to use these options for anything. I think that the admin reset may reset all TV settings to factory default. These suggestions may or may not work, but may be worth a try, IMHO. Google "Vizio TV reset" for other options.

Substantial Improvement - Gamma Setting 2.2

Greetings Colleagues,

Recent calibrations involved using Gamma setting of 2.4 for BT 1886 standard, but this setting created what I noticed today as the dreaded black crush, which is lack of detail in dark scenes and this setting may not be appropriate with some displays.

Therefore, I reverted to using the time proven gamma setting at 2.2, which brightens up the picture a bit. I also set brightness using the 2nd brightness AVSForum disc pattern where level 19 is barely flashing, per instructions. I readjusted all of the other settings accordingly and the gamma graph level is flat right at 2.1 (which I will post upon request). The picture pops out without excessive color saturation. The primary and secondary color settings did not need to be readjusted.

Measured color temperature is 8000K and Luminance @ 100% White Pattern is 45 ftL. The new settings below are bolden.

The Observation Settings

Greetings once again Colleagues:

In recently observing the PQ and settings, the picture appeared to be dull compared to the calibrated and calibrated dark tv modes. The respective luminance (100%) were 70 ftL and 60 ftL. So I raised my backlight setting to 82 to obtain 60 ftL luminance.

Next I noticed the impact of the Clear Action setting and turned it off.

I changed the gamma setting to 2.0 because this was the best setting that provided greater detail without "washing out" the picture quality. The hcfr gamma curve is flat just above 1.9. Color temperature is 8000K.

Finally, I used the recommended 75% saturation field patterns (instead of 100%) to adjust the primary and secondary colors. It appears that this TV has an imperfect CMS. I noticed that the previous settings were way off.

The blue filter method was used to adjust more the tint and color settings.

The changes are in bold:

Input Settings: HDMI-2,

Auto Brightness: Off

Color: 57 (50 without the blue filter)

HDMI Cable Hardware and Ferrite Cores

Greetings Colleagues,

I am currently looking at changing my hdmi cable to a 2.0 (which has a higher data transfer rate) with CL2 (in wall installation). Currently I have a standard hdmi cable (probably a 1.4) and I am seeing small artifacts in the picture. This could be due to clouding, which can occur on lcd tvs, or electrical interference due to the hdmi cable running near the power cord behind the wall. While I am waiting for the new 2.0 hdmi cable from Monoprice, I have installed ferrite cores near the ends of the old hdmi cable which seems to have improved the picture quality.

Updates and Corrected Settings

Greetings Colleagues:

I installed the new 4k hdmi cable and it may have made some slight improvements to picture quality, especially with using ferrite cores near the ends of the cable. At least I am now prepared to watch 4k video content when it comes out.

During the install, I noticed that the hue, saturation and brightness settings in the color tuner section were off. I took my time and re-calculated the settings for D65 calibration and Color Temperature 8000K, as posted below:

The D65 Settings (Movie Mode)

These settings are for REC 709 standards with a color temperature of 6500K for movie mode. Luminance @ 100% IRE is 60 ftL. Gamma setting was changed to 1.8 to brighten up the picture. The measured gamma graph was flat at 1.7. Delta E's for the grayscale were between 0.1 to 1.5 (below 4 is good). Delta E's for primary and secondary colors were between 0.4 and 5.1 (below 10 is good). No changes to 11 point white balance settings.

Input Settings: HDMI-2,

The Sharpness Setting by Pausing Picture

Greetings Colleagues,

In reviewing comments regarding Sharpness setting by some of our learned avsforum members, it was suggested that one method of determining proper sharpness setting is to freeze or pause a picture on the television and adjust the sharpness setting when looking at straight or sharp edged objects in the picture. When I did this for our television I noticed artifacts when setting the sharpness setting at 1 or above, and that the 0 setting had no artifacts. Perhaps my old calibration disc sharpness pattern was not sufficient for the new 4k technology.

Using this described "pausing picture" technique, I recommend setting the sharpness setting at 0.

Recommended Settings

Greetings Colleagues,

I have been looking at the differences between the recent settings for D65 (movie mode) and 8000K (standard mode), and I believe that the colors in the D65 settings are more vibrant. The gamma setting at 1.8 brightens the TV's picture and does not "wash out" the colors. I am recommending the D65 settings over the 8000k settings for viewing. Edit: I change the gamma setting to 2.0 for better day and nite viewing which does not affect other settings.
