Much better.
Wow, that's way better than 72%!!

Btw, is your measurement equivalent to the "normalized DCI/P3 coverage" from Rtings?

Red face Samsung JS8500 vs. TCL 55P607

All, from the early results from Mark, I'm getting excited. And yes, I ordered it earlier today too.

I thought I'd get the opinions of the AV gurus here in the thread. I have a Samsung JS8500 55" now, but am wondering if I should relegate it to the basement and use this new TCL 55P607 55" as my main TV. Am I crazy or will I notice better visuals & clarity on new TCL? Just wondering, as we watch a lot of 4K digital streaming shows. Thanks for any input.

Just ordered since Amazon doesn't charge till it's in the stock. It looks like we're looking at August release.

Amazon is estimating an august release but their listing is a bit funky already, because it isn't showing as a "preorder" even though that's what it is, and there's already a fake review on the product page. It's supposed to release on June 6. I don't know why it would be an August ship date if the release date is June 6, so I'm optimistic it'll be much sooner than August.

You snooze, you lose. It's now listed as "unavailable" on Amazon.

DirecTV since 1999
Genie DVR

I believe it will only be a 60hz panel, despite the Amazon listing showing 120hz. Pretty sure that's just an "effective" refresh rate, meaning the backlight strobes at 120hz but the actual screen only refreshes at 60hz.

Seems like it sold out way faster than I would've expected, and now the listing isn't even on Amazon at all, it doesn't show in search results anymore. Maybe Amazon just took it down so they could fix it to properly show up as a preorder?

It's still there. Searched Google fit TCL 55P607 and the Amazon listing shows up.

Oh, weird. You can get there from google search results but if you directly search within Amazon, it doesn't show up in their search results. Is that normal for things that are "unavailable"?

Well the verdict is still out on whether the panel has decent motion blur or jitter. I bought a low end TCL from Costco a few months ago and it has pretty terrible judder when playing 24fps.

That's what I would have guessed. Will make for a great bedroom TV upgrade, but I watch way too much sports for this to be my main TV.

I watch exactly zero sports, so not really an issue for me Although as @Flaky mentioned, we have yet to see how the judder is on this set, and without 120hz it's a bit more difficult to get judder-free 24fps content. Vizio TVs simply reduce their refresh rate to 48hz so each frame is shown exactly twice, therefore producing no judder. And Vizio P Series can even de-judderize 24fps content that is coming over a 60fps signal, like movies over cable TV, for example. This shouldn't be a concern for me personally, but I do expect this set to at least be able to do 24fps content from a Blu Ray player judder-free, considering it's not a cheap-o set like TCL's past TVs in the US.

OK but specs say 120 Hz and my colorimeter confirmed it when I synced to the TV.

My bad for jumping to conclusions.... Perhaps it is 60 Hz with backlight scanning.

I'll take a look at some scenes with tricky pans, for sure.

I have not done content evaluations yet (will add that later today and tomorrow). But I have gotten my first look article started:TCL 55″ P-Series Model 55P607 4K HDR Roku TV with Dolby Vision: First Look

Omg, it's an actual 120hz panel?? That seems almost inconceivable at this price point.

TCL's P-Series brings some serious picture quality to the table at an astonishingly low price. It's a Roku TV with Dolby Vision and 72-zone FALD. With encouraging performance in numerous areas, this could wind up being one of the best deal on a 55" HDR TV around. Plus, gamers should be thrilled by the ultra-low lag times for both SDR and HDR 1080p when in Game mode.

Just read your first look, Mark. All I can say is holy ****. All the numbers you've gotten for the various specs seriously are kinda blowing my mind at this price. That input lag...omg. I'm glad I decided to preorder from Amazon while the listing was available...I'd still prefer to buy at Costco but I can make do with an Amazon purchase if this TV really is so incredible. You've hit on all my most important specs already: really good DCI/P3 coverage, incredibly low input lag (single digits, literally wtf??), 120hz panel(!!), brightness at least on par with a Vizio P Series...Now the only things really left to see are the local dimming performance, the contrast ratios, and how good it is at judder-free 24fps.

I'm almost skeptical that you're providing honest numbers!! It seems too good to be true.

Thanks for the write-up/review! Sounds like a great TV for the price! Wish the 65" was coming sooner than holiday time. Wifey would be way more understanding of me wanting to upgrade our old TV at $1k instead of $2k or more for a Sony LED or OLED.

I videotaped myself doing the lag tests, for the historical record, lol. I had to weigh posting as fast as possible versus making sure I'm not messing up any of the measurements. So encouraging!

Based on the specs Mark has measured so far, I'd go as far as saying this TV would be worth waiting that long for. The bang-for-buck seems completely unbeatable, no other brand comes even close.

I watch a decent amount of basketball so when I heard the P series sets were 60hz I pretty much ruled these out. Hearing they are 120hz though has them back in the game for me. Can't wait to hear more information regarding other content.

Also, spending less now allows one to upgrade quicker. If I spend $2k or more on one now, my wife won't want to upgrade until another 5 years or so.

Liking what I am hearing so far!

Most importantly really, how is the screen coating? Vizio uses such an aggressive (cheap) coating compared to samsung, it really dulls colors in comparison.

I have not settled on a way to quantify the performance of screen coatings yet, but it's something I've been thinking about recently, for sure.

Sounds promising. Maybe the consumer won't get screwed for a change? Only some time and experiences will tell.
