OFFICIAL 2017 Sony X850E Owners Thread (No Price Talk)

Figured I would start a thread for this seemingly overlooked set. Since February of 2016 I have owned a 65X850C, a 65X850D and now own the 65X850E. Every single issue or complaint I had with previous 2 TV's are non-existent with this set IMO.

Sony X850E Series

First off, the performance of the TV is much improved. Not sure whether the 7.0 Android TV update is responsible or if the upgraded Quad-Core SoC (MT5891/Mali-T860 MP2) is. Confident they both contribute to a much better user experience.

The only thing I don't like is that Enhanced HDMI is only available on port 2 and port 3. Port 3 also happens to be the ARC supporting HDMI port.

Other than that, I personally feel this TV is a HUGE improvement over the two previous X850 sets.

Ask questions, post impressions, keep it friendly.

We are still waiting for the 2017 Sony range to be released in Australia.

I thought all of the 850E series were going to be VA panels this year but according to RTings, the 75" is an IPS panel again. Can anyone confirm if this what type of panel is used in the 75" 850E?

Seems that the 75" is indeed an IPS panel.

Really wanted it to be a VA panel. :( I have a 43" 800D and am impressed with the picture on that.

Really, might have to have a look today, did not see any last weekend in Adelaide and the E series is only just starting to appear on Sony Australia's website.

Another positive, [email protected] is indeed usable without artifacts on PC. 850C and 850D were unable to display this combo without artifacts.

Great value line, these sets are real nice. Come in all sizes from small to super large. For a edge lit TV, these things are great ;)

Yeah, having spent the past year and a half with both the 65X850C and 65X850D, I can say that the 65X850E is superiour to both. With that in mind, I am only referring to my experience with the 65" version of these Tv's. Bigger sizes from past years and this year may use different panel tech and honestly I'd rather have a higher contrast ratio with the VA panel in this year's than the IPS from last year.

4K.com published there review, (With a small error on HLG HDR support not being present.) Not many reviews or attention for this set as of yet. Makes sense considering how great the X900E series is this year. Still a great set IMO.

Best Buy has the 65" on sale for an excellent price this week if anyone is interested. Again, great set for the money and, imo, a huge improvement over both the 65" versions of the 850C and 850D.

I'm looking at either a 65" 850E or 65" 900E for a bedroom. I have a few 850D's and I'm happy with them except for the poor black levels. How much better are the 850E black levels compared to the 850D? With the BB sale going in it looks like the 900E is an extra $500, but it sounds like it might be worth it?

I've had the 65" 850C, 850D and now the 850E. The 850E is much better in every way over the two prior year models, including the black levels. With that out of the way, the 900E is the better set, hands down and obviously the price difference is justified. For the current sale price of the 65" X850E @ Best Buy, I'd say it's a no-brainer if your budget is sub $2,000.

Little side note, Bluetooth audio and HLG HDR were included with the last firmware update.

Has anyone replaced a plasma, from the last two years of production, with this tv? If so, what are your impressions? Also, how is the motion handling?

ml3000 06-28-2017 07:46 PM

What are everyone's thought on the 850E vs the TCL P607. Rtings gave the 607 one heck of a review. I just picked up the 850 but now debating if i made the wrong choice by almost spending $1000 more

^^^ You can not always trust those reviews.....

Would love to...if you had the 65" version. Unfortunately, the 75" version uses an IPS panel which means worse blacks/lower contrast levels. Settings of a calibrated 65" wouldn't be optimal for your 75".

Hard to compare, no plasmas did 4K so what would be the comparison? 1080p?

IMO, this set has great black level performance for the price. You want 4K and plasma-like black levels? OLED.

Well, TCL has been putting out some impressive sets as of late. It definitely seems to perform great and has features that are usually reserved for higher-end Tv's. Worse case scenario, buy it and see which one you like more.

Thanks, the blacks aren't that bad. I was more concerned with the brightness setting.

Didn't mean that the black levels were horrible or unacceptable, just worse than the 65" version. Also had a 65X850D before this and that year Sony used an IPS panel for the 65" model and it was definitely noticeable over the 850E and my 850C, both of which use VA panels @65".

As far as brightness is concerned, keep in mind that the settings on this set are different than what most are use to. The brightness setting is more like the back light setting and the black level setting has more of an effect on the actual black levels than the brightness setting does to the point that most usually leave it at 50 or not far from it because it will crush blacks easily.

I appreciate your help, I know the difference between ips/va. These sets are edge lit and not full array so to me it wouldn't make that much of a difference. I've never owned a sony tv so I needed a basic understanding of the settings as they are way different than my 65e6p oled. For instance when HDR is playing on my oled their is a pop up, where as on the Sony when I stream HDR I don't know if its in that mode..ill play around with it more, but for a living room tv its very solid and the colors are very vibrant.

Well I can say that regardless of both being edge lit, especially with low ambient lighting, the difference is very noticeable. (For my eyes)

Contrast ratio of the 65" is roughly 4000:1 whereas the 75" is closer to 1200:1. That would be pretty noticeable to most. Someone please correct me on the 75" spec if it's wrong.

Regardless, when playing HDR content, hit the Action Menu button on remote, then picture adjustments and in the top right corner you would see the HDR logo. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d70a0bbc7d.jpg

I get what your saying and understand that their are differences in the sizes in regards to type of panel, that was never a concern to me, as neither the va/ips panel compare in blacks to my oled. If I were that worried about it I would have gone with the 900e, but that was a little out of my price range. I'm sure their will be future owners for the 75. Thanks for the picture and finally figured out the question regarding HDR.

I mean, the 850E is a REALLY mediocre TV. I'm not even sure why you would buy one, when you could pay less and get a 2016 TV that is far superior.
