Come on in, the water's fine!

If it's still too rich for some, 2018 is expected to be the debut of a few more DV enabled players with them showing up starting this spring.

It’s a hefty price for sure. Especially when many have a different fork of uhd player that “work” but do not have DV

I would just put it on the stand, adjust the settings per rtings recommendations but tweaking brightness settings to match your room conditions. Then watch some varying content. I wouldn't go looking for problems, it is a budget set that will not be perfect if you go looking for issues, but will be great during normal viewing.

Looking for flashlighting will require you turn off local dimming basically, which is something you will never really want to do anyway. as long as you have no dead/stuck pixels and no excessive shadowing or dirty screen effect, I would just use it and enjoy it .

Mine does have a tiny defect where there is some type of pin size defect in the actual plastic covering the screen up near the corner, but I only notice it when no content is playing and it is on a mostly white screen under just the right circumstance. It seems most issues will either be typical of a budget set, or damage caused during transport.

Dude, that ****ing sucks. Hope you didn't just brick your set.

I know it's mentioned all of the time, but these service menus are so ill-advised and you really have to proceed with caution.

Try unplugging the set, try switching sources, try everything that you can man. Hope you can remedy it.

Dan are you using Brightest/DV Dark for movies?
Also I’m so sorry to hear about the trouble downloading the local dimming firmware.
I dodged a bullet, last night I tried to get into the secret menu but I must have been pressing the wrong button combo and I

Okay all, I have a dilemma...

I'm thinking of purchasing my parents this TV for xmas and keeping my ST60 plasma. Or I can just keep the TCL set for myself and give my parents the ST60.

They will be using the tv in the family room watching mostly SDR content and directv programming channels, and their internet speed isn't fast enough to stream 4K content anyway; I doubt they will buy a new 4K BD player either. Based on this, the P series would be under-utilized for what it's capable of, which is why i'm thinking they'll be better off with me giving them my ST60 plasma and buying the TCL for me to use in the mancave as my movie and gaming set.

I'm just really reluctant to give up my plasma. However, based on my earlier posts and people's responses who came from a panasonic VT or ST plasma, no one seems to regret or miss their sets.

I feel as though i'm getting to the point where i'm overthinking this and just need to flip a coin. Anyone have any thoughts?

Got my new set and it came perfect enough I'm not gonna mess with it anymore (one small dark spot that's unnoticeable in normal viewing).

I see what you guys are talking about with Netflix being dark in DV... I just bumped the gamma up to 2.0 in the app and brightness to 55 and it looks perfect now, IMHO.

Man, even 1080p on this TV looks stunning to me.

Netflix must be mastering their DV content differently. Of course, DV disc and DV streaming encoding are already different animals. The only thing that is actually better in Netflix's DV encodings is the use of ICtCp luma/chroma sampling data rather than YCbCr since the former standard was designed for wide color gamuts. Dolby is trying to get ICtCp incorporated in the UHD Blu-ray and ATSC 3.0 standards. Everything else about DV streaming encoding is inferior to the disc version because it has to work within the low 4k video bitrate constraints of Netflix, Vudu, Amazon, etc.

I’ve confirmed that the slow dimming regression is now gone after force updating the local dimming to V8-ST10K01-LC1V011, after force updating to OS 8 on the Xbox one S

But I will no longer touch the secret menus her on out.

Looks like OS 8 also fixed my networking disconnecting and crashing when changing HDR 10 modes.

I came from an ST60, no regrets. Things I needed to get used to were the poor viewing angle (but not as poor as the rtings review seems to indicate. I feel like it's actually better than the Vizio p55 I tried previously, and that one has an IPS screen) and a fair bit of dirty screen effect, but the benefits of hdr + wcg and no risk of burn in far outweigh those in my opinion.

Netflix's Dolby Vision encoded 4k streaming content. You must have their top tier 4k plan. UHD Blu-ray Dolby Vision content is even better.

Anyone contacted support about this yet? There has to be a way to roll back the local dimming update. Pissed that the info was even posted here and even more pissed I was stupid enough to do it

For SDR I like the Auto colorspace. This is the setting for Rec709 and is spot on except for luminance errors, which are high. (The reason may be due to conversion. From what i understand the TV's normal operation is to convert everything to HDR). Anyway, to me, SDR reds are better in Auto mode.

The chart below is before calibration.

Anyone else with a meter, please post images of spectral footprint. I'm curious to know what NBP phosphor technology is all about. According to reviews, TCL uses Quantum Dots tecnology in China, but not here. How do the new TVs reach these wide color spaces with present LED-phosphor backlights??? AIU, the narrow bands shown in the chart are key.

Three weeks in and I have my first problem. My remote died on me. I changed batteries, tried to pair it with the button by the batteries and no light comes on. I reset my TV, unplugged it. I have another Roku remote, it paired fine. Guess I'll have to contact TLC customer support. Wish me luck

Just as a counter-experience to Colin McClellan, I updated my P605 to version 8.0 and did the local dimming upgrade found in the "secret" menu and haven't experienced any issues whatsoever. I just finished binge watching season 1 of Stranger Things in HDR and it looked stunning. Starting season 2 of Stranger Things now and still no issues.

*EDIT* I also haven't experienced any issues with HDR gaming on my Xbox One X since the update and upgrade either.

FYI. Season 1 of STRANGER THINGS is in 4K, but not HDR/DOLBY VISION. It is labeled as Dolby Vision, but that is for Season 2 episodes. Still, Season 1 in 4K does look great.

fyi, Sony also users the phosphors (no QD ) in their 900e. More than one way to skin a cat.
