From what I am reading here, the 6500 series is fairly low end stuff. Last year, the 86" TV was in the higher end 9500 series, 86SJ9570. Seems you are right, they have really downgraded the non-Oled sets this year.
Meanwhile, Sony has TWO 85" decently priced monsters, the 850F and 900F. Samsung also has two big sets the 82" NU8000 and 82" Q6F. ALL of these look like they are superior to LGs single offering.
LG, 65" (your biggest reasonably priced OLED) is not big enough. Get some nice large sets like Sony and Samsung have.
extremely interesting. i'm thinking, however, that the panels between the 86UK6570PUB and 86SJ9570 might even be the same? the price has gone down but that is true across the market for 2018. But basically, we haven't seen too much new technology being released in 2018, but we've been seeing the large formats get cheaper, finally! Obviously, the trim is the lower too, which basically means the magic remote, i think. i have a need for good viewing angles, so i'm leaning more toward this IPS display because sony's are not IPS in the 80" range, i believe. i really hope oled can take off more, but it's just still not there yet where it needs to be in terms of price, size, etc.., but i think the manufacturers will start making room for it and hopefully you will see more oled tv's!

Yes, there are differences between the LG UK6570PUB 4K HDR Smart LED UHD TV w/ AI ThinQ® - 86" Class (85.6" Diag), Model # 86UK6570PUB and the LG SUPER UHD 4K HDR Smart LED TV - 86" Class (85.6" Diag), Model # 86SJ9570. You'll notice that in the titles for each TV, the 86SJ9570 is a "Super UHD 4K HDR Smart LED TV" indicated by the "S" in the model number and the 86UK6570PUB is a 4K HDR Smart LED UHD TV, indicated by the "U" in its model number. The 86SJ9570 is a true 10-bit panel and the 86UK6570PUB uses FRC (Frame Rate Control - 8 bits + FRC) to achieve a 10-bit panel. The 86SJ9670 is an Edge-Lit TV and the 86UK6570PUB is a Direct LED. The 86UK6570PUB has a 20W 2.0 Channel System that features down-firing speakers, the 86SK9570 features an 80W 5.2 Channel Harman Kardon™ Sound System and LG's Wireless Sound Sync. The 86UK6570PUB has 3 x USB 2.0 ports and the 86SJ9570 has 2 x USB 2.0 ports and 1 x USB 3.0 port...^IFV
so, looks like it's not exactly the same panel, but they did find a way to get a price a lot lower this year on the 86" on stuff like the speakers and that 3rd usb port that people don't use anyway. smart! but don't forget about the spying features cough cough AI features they added this year too like other brands are
