Review: Vizio P65-E1 4K/UHD HDR LCD TV

The Vizio P65-E1 is a 4K UHD LCD TV with FALD backlighting and support for Dolby Vision and HDR10, all for a sweet price.

You really used Clear Action ON for all SDR/HDR10 and DV viewing?

How much run time was on the display before the calibration?

Was the DVGR used for the whole DV calibration? The calibration for DV is a mess. Vizio has left us in the dark with the DVGR. They now follow bt2020 colorspace for calibration with DCI-P3 targets. I still use the EOTF from the DVGR for grayscale EOTF adjustments. Also you CANNOT use brightness settings for the calibration or it will introduce banding and micro-blocking in content.

No mention of the white line issue or random reboots? This is on my short list but with those issues I'm tempted to wait for the 2018 TCL's next month or see if Vizio does in fact have a solution to the white line issue.

Any recommendation for an OTA tuner? We have an issue with power outages.

They started informing people yesterday (or the day before?) that they found a solution and parts will be shipping out in March to do repairs.

YouTube TV instead of messing with a tuner/antenna is always an option to consider... it's available in the top 100 markets now, includes your local channels and they just added 8 Turner network channels with a price still at $35 if you sign up before March 13th... Not to sound like a commercial/shill, I'm just saying it's a great option for these tuner-less Vizio's and does provide good value... Only catch is that you need a Roku (added recently) or Shield, Apple TV, etc. or not afraid to Cast, which DOES send the whole app to be controlled by the Vizio remote once the Cast has started at least, you don't have to control from the Cast mobile device.

I am guessing that he turn CA on after it got calibrated because it greatly reduces light output in DV and HDR10. I am curious as to how he went about the DV calibration as his seems to track the EOTF pretty good also and ours don?t.

Well I'm guessing the Display had very low hours on it because it was still well balanced. That's also probably why it tracked the EOTF better.

Does anyone have any info on a next generation P series?

I don't know if Vizio will completely revert back to being a budget line TV manufacturer or wow/surprise everyone with a newly designed P series.

How do you access this? This is not something any of us owners with calibration equipment are privy to.

Would be nice to see the calibration adjustment numbers so we can compare your results. Seems to not be anywhere near what I am seeing from my results.

I think it will be similar to the current P but maybe a bit brighter a bit better color range and possibly more zones. Hopefully an updated Chromecast for 60fps DV and YouTube HDR support.

Nowhere in the review did I see the unit was calibrated straight out of the box. This is Scott we are talking about here. I think he knows better than to have a brand new TV/display calibrated without running it for a while.

I'm more curious how to access the factory-service mode.

You really think he put 150 hours on it? From his RGB I'd guess 75. I stopped seeing changes on mine after 150 hours.

Why is this display referred to as a TV or Television when it lacks a digital tuner that is required of televisions?

TV - Sony 65XBR-930e | Receiver - Yamaha RX-V577 | 4K player - Sony UBP-X700 | PS3 | Router - Asus RT-AC86U | SVS SB-2000 sub | Paradigm Monitor SE 6000F L/R | Paradigm Monitor SE 2000C center | Paradigm ADP-170 v.3 rears

How can you assess the hours put on a display simply by looking at the RGB values? No 2 displays are identical.

It's a simple error. I'm sure he will fix it. It's technically called a Home Theater Display.

It's not a technical evaluation. Most precal I've seen from multiple displays share the same similar pattern spread between them.

I could be wrong, but on my Vizio M Clear Action is disabled in all HDR content. I can toggle it on and off, but visually it does not enable like in SDR content.

On the P it does kick on when enabled. Lowers peak quite a bit.

In the case of Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Harvey, almost all of South Texas was without Internet for days. We were able to get OTA local channels, once they got power.

Very good point, if you have power but no internet back yet... we have actual TV's with tuners in our house with backup antennas for them... but OP was worried about losing power for a bit and missing favorite shows being recorded, so for that application a streaming TV service is worth considering.

You can also use Plex for OTA recording with hdhomerun tuners for example. There are many options. Not all streaming tv have locals either.

The initial release of the display is not in the same place it is now. With all of the firmware updates that changed the way it functions at almost every level. Unfortunately it seems that most things created nowadays aren't polished until 1-2 years after release. In the case of the 2016/17 Vizio P series... It's still has plenty of room for improvement.
