Ok, that looks bad indeed. I do not have these issues currently on my Q9FN, at least not quiet as bad as yours but I do have some haloing. But as i've said, Local dimming seems to be limited in Game-mode as I see no difference at all between Low and High. Do you also not notice any difference between Local Dimming settings Low-Standard-High in game-mode? Its always this bad?

The main issues I got introduced with the latest firmware 1290 (have not updated to latest yet) is the game-mode itself, not related to local dimming but that the picture is much dimmer than before.

Picture is dimmer as well in game mode, in addition to the dimming issues. Granted, my 40 zones will not perform anywhere near the q9fn, but it was nowhere near as bad as this before

Hello,

I have a un82nu8000 2018. When playing retro games in game mode I'm noticing a lot of ghosting when there are fast moving objects. Typically the ghosting is on the right side of object if I'm running to the right for example

Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can help with this? It almost feels as though the panel is not running at 120hz.

Also is there a way to set external sound by default when the TV is turned on? It used to be like this, but all of a sudden it stopped and I have to change the sound destination every time I turn the TV on.

As a previous q8 owner I can say that game mode has always looked like that on the q8. The only work around I notice was using the freesync to ultimate which for some reason looked like local dimming was active idk. Also I would turn off all HDR from the console and run purely sdr. Hdr is really not all that to me. Looks dull and less bright. The zones don't shut on and off on game mode , I replaced multiple panels with samsung thinking it was a panel defect but it's just software related. If it's not a fps or a sports game that requires timing I would play games outside of game mode. But try freesync

1292.3 available today :
https://www.samsung.com/fr/support/m...XXC/#downloads

I'm a bit scared to upgrade as current 1290 is the most satisfying PQ I had in months
(the only current issue being info upper bar not updating time to time, until reboot)

Anyone know where I can find a 65Q9FN in the wild? Amazon seems to have sold all of their stock. With the updates destroying the PQ on my Q8FN, I am looking for a new TV. Looking at the Q90R, it still seems the Q9FN is the superior TV.

I have a tech coming to my house to look at my Q8FN today, but im not hopeful anything positive will come out of it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

There is a problem with Game mode and the patching process, I'm pretty sure it's not related to a firmware version, but something going wrong during the firmware patch.

I'm here since 2 years and when I got this TV, there was people complaining about micro dimming not working in game mode with the same firmware than me whereas it was so fine on my set that I could watch movie in game mode without noticing it. Some months later, a firmware update broke the game mode of my Q9FN just like you.
It was awful and simply unusable at all, at the point I had to use non game mode to play games.

During this time some ppl here told me that game mode was completely fine with the fm and their TV. Then the 1290 fm came, fixing my TV's game mode (now it's great again), whereas some ppl here just complained that 1290 ruined their game mode.

As you can see, all of this doesn't make any sense unless either:
- different panel versions get fixed/broken in same time
- it's not related to firmware, but the firmware update process (and I think it is the problem here)

I'm planning on buying the Q9FN TV, but before I do, there are two factors that I'd like to know from this mode's owners:

1. I've read that enabling Game mode will elevate the black levels and will not give the deep blacks that are available in non-game mode. More specifically, that it's due to the local dimming dialing down drastically on game mode. Is this true?

2. Almost all other review sources, except for Rtings, have stated that the viewing angle has improved in the Q9FN compared to the previous VA panel models. Any truth to this? I will be watching (or rather playing) from dead center by sitting about 4-5 feet away from a 55 inch model. I used to own the KS8000 model and with the aforementioned sitting distance I could see contrast and color degradation on the left and right sides of the screen, even when I was sitting dead center (one of the reasons why I bought the curved KS8500 afterwards).

Looking forward to answers and hopefully will get the TV!

PS: any pictures from the game mode contrast would be greatly appreciated!

That's not for the US model. The Korean site has an update that works for the US TV, it's labeled 1291.1 but it's actually 1292.1.

Thanks for your input. Problem with the Freesync option is that one have to use Game-mode then, so cant avoid it. Mostly I just play with Game-mode off now, depending on the game played ofc.
I have not noticed local dimming becoming different with FreeSync on, but maybe you're right, I mostly play games on PC, but I never use PC input cause its terrible all around with no picture settings available, so I stick to Console input same as PS4/Xbox, and the input lag isnt much worse that I can tell plus it gives me most of the options to adjust picture back

Is it me or has the auto motion plus got a lot better with the latest firmware. I know the soap opera effect isn't the best. But at high judder and blur i hardly get the pixelation on fast moving objects no as much as before.

I may be in the minority, but for me AutoMotion ON gets rid of all judder and I barely see soap opera. I must be unaffected by it.

Do you own the European version of the Q9FN? If you could provide the full model, would be greatly appreciated!
I'm planning to buy the same model here in Europe, but all this talk about the firmware update ruining the game mode local dimming and blacks makes me concerned.

I own the QE65Q9FNATXXC European version. If you're scared by these firmware updates yo could just stick with the one you have. I had this issue for about 3-4 months, but it got fixed by the next update : no such big deal. I'm convinced this TV still has the best led PQ you can find.

Appreciate your help greatly! I will be getting the same in Europe, but the 55 inch model (QE55Q9FNATXZT).

Now one last thing: As mentioned in my previous post, I would be sitting quite close to the 55" to get the optimal experience for 4K content. The sitting distance would be 1.5 meters, which means that the viewing angles will degrade the picture quality from the left and right sides, even if I sit dead center within the aforementioned distance from the TV.
I've read numerous people (and reviewers) claiming that the viewing angles with this model has improved. Is this true?

If it's not too much to ask, could you kindly check how much the left and right sides of your panel degrades the contrast and color if you sit just under 2 meters away from your TV?
And if so, is it really that noticeable or very minimal?

Thanks in advance KwizatZ!

I got 55 inch as well. Im my very subjective opinion this TV has great viewing no matter if I sit close or further away, the issue only begins when I move to the sides 1 meter left or right, then I get bad haloing. When I first got the TV I used to sit very close and it was great, when I moved back I didnt notice any difference. As others have said already, and I agree, this TV is the best LED there is, and I prefer it over OLED due to peak brightness so in short this is the best TV period (granted I have not read up about the new 8k flagships, but I dont care about 8k at the moment as im more excited about steady 4k 60 fps games and even 4k 120fps before I move to 8k properly, 4k is more than enough with 55 inch)

The only downsides I can think of with Q9FN is perhaps game-mode brightness issues (patch/firmware related it seems) and game-mode local dimming (or lack thereof as low/high change nothing in game-mode, think its always been this way), so when playing casual games I turn game-mode off, but then you miss out on the Freesync feature sadly. That said, when comparing to pictures of the earlier models bad game-mode dimming that was shared, I wont complain much anymore as its much improved with Q9FN

So Samsung sent a tech to my house, and I showed him how game mode looks in 1290.4 and he agreed that it looked like crap and was going to swap out the main board which hopefully had an older firmware version.

Before he could do that, he had to call samsung (which he did in front of me on speaker) and initiated a video call to samsung showing the problem, and the samsung tech said that is completely normal and expected and did not agree to letting the tech do anything to my TV.

I tried to tell him that no, this is not normal, and it did not look like this prior to the 1290.4 update and he rudely kept interrupting me, barely allowing me to speak, again saying that this is normal.

Guess I am done with samsung at this point. I was in the market for a new TV anyway and was eyeing the q90r, but I may risk burn in and go oled.

Did the tech set everything back to default or like most here were settings distorted every which way?

Yeah, all settings were back to default when he left. All he basically did was access the service menu and bring up the "picture test" which was the picture of the kid on the beach.

The tech also agreed with the bad DSE I had and was willing to do a panel replace, but again, samsung was having none of it. They even argued for a minute, and then the tech left apologizing that there was nothing he could do because samsung needed to approve anything before he did it.

Really bummed right now. I am ok living with the DSE, but I guess my only hope here is the next major firmware update resolves the dimming issues and lowered brightness in game mode.
Magnifican likes this.

Much appreciate it Magnifican!
Judging from the size of the TV you have, you got the European version, as I understood that's the only region where the 55" is available?
If that's the case, then the game mode should have been fixed with the latest 1292.3 patch according to KwizatZ.
Does your TV's game mode have any local dimming at all, or is it just between low/high settings where the issue is present?

Also regarding the viewing angles, what I actually meant was when sitting dead center at an optimal distance for 4K content (being about 1.5m with the 55" size), do you see any contrast/color degradation on the left/right-most side of the panel?
I had this issue with the KS8000 model, where the sides of the picture would slightly (but noticeably) lose color and elevate the blacks.
