ARC only
Just a note, Atmos works great via ARC to my Denon x4400h, which is the preferred format anyways nowadays for a lot of people.

If you are using OTA or a cable box that has native output, tune a 1080i, set for full pixel, then tune a 720P and set for +1. If you only have a set output, set that one. Also for other 1080P input sources do the same.

My Bell box can output 720p, 1080i and p and 4k uhd (60fps), no "native". I've been using 720p and letting the TV do the upscaling, but I've changed it to 1080i and used the full pixel.

So with Black Friday here and this being a friendly time for consumers to pick up TV's, I (as a current LG 65C8 owner) have been debating constantly about the Sony 75900f. I sit about 12 feet (13 reclined) from my TV, with a loveseat situated 45 degrees to the right and a recliner 30 degrees to the left. The past 7 months I've reasoned that my OLED was worth it because of the side seating situation...you know...for guests. That hypothesis has turned out to not be quite as valid as I thought. So I've been going back and forth on "upgrading" to the 75 incher. Any former OLED owners here who have? I feel like my wife my kill me at this point (having had to send back on C8 for banding issues). Without going through the entire thread, are there any things I should be aware of? Any lottery issues?

2018 Sony XBR 900F owners thread (No Price Talk)

Hello guys!

I've been bitten by the upgrade bug and I pulled the trigger on a Sony XBR-85X900F through Amazon! It is expected to be delivered this Saturday.

I currently have an LG 65C7P which has already been moved to my master bedroom, in order to make way for the new 85X900F.

We currently sit 7.5 feet from where the TV will be. At that distance, the immersion factor should be amazing!

Some might say why go from an OLED to a FALD unit and the straight answer is SIZE! I simply wanted a bigger TV, and since the 77" OLED is running roughly around $7,000, I opted to save $2,500 and get the much bigger 85" TV.

I can't wait for Saturday and get this bad boy all setup.

I will post a photo of my setup once I get it all hooked up this weekend.

Looking forward to reading through this thread and bombard you with questions. lol

BTW, what should be the first thing I should do to the TV? Settings, break in, etc?

Any housekeeping pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I will be using an AppleTV 4K box for all my streaming needs (Netflix, Prime, YouTube, Infuse Pro), so I don't have to deal with Android TV at all. All the horror stories about Android TV did not affect me at all on my decision to purchase this TV. I will just treat it as if it was a non-smart TV and deal only with the ATV 4K box.

First setting you should do is go into the HDMI settings and turn on "enhanced HDMI" for ports 2 and 3. Also, make sure your ATV is connected to either Port 2 or 3, as those are the full-bandwidth ports. 1 and 4 are limited bandwidth HDMI ports.

Great info, thanks! BTW, either port 2 or 3 the ARC port? I have an AVR to which I connect my cable box and ATV. So I have just one cable connected to the ARC port on the TV.

As with any LCD, there is some chance of DSE, but unless you specifically go looking for it you probably won't notice it. Generally, the consensus seems to be these TVs have great uniformity. It's one of the reasons I got this one instead of a Samsung Q6F.

The biggest complaint I've read is about blooming, but I must not be all that sensitive to it (and also I don't view in total darkness) because I don't notice it.

No problem :-)

Also, a lot of people recommend going to the Rtings.com page and copying their calibration settings to optimize your picture. Try it and see what you think -- you may find you like your own custom configurations better, but it is a good place to start.

EDIT: To answer your second question, Port 3 is the ARC port.

I was wondering about this too. I use DirecTV Now and also plan to use an ATV 4K. Does anyone know if you get a better picture using the internal apps or an ATV 4K? Does anyone know if you can get the DirectTV Now app on the 900F itself...or is the only option a stand alone media player. My TV should be here in the next few days. Thanks

I am pretty sure you can download the DirectTV app. I don't recall if it is already on the TV apps.

It's a personal preference, really, on what picture looks better to you (independent streamer versus native apps) and the convenience factor. For me, the internal apps have the clearest, most pristine picture. Therefore, I put up with the Android interface as opposed to my Roku Ultra or other folks that might have the Apple 4K. I really only stream from two main sources - Netflix and Amazon Prime. So - it's not that difficult to live with the Android interface.

Home Theater Setup
SONY 75X900F & 49X900E, Denon X6700H & Emotiva XPA-3, OPPO 103 - 9.1.4 Setup - Speakers - Studio 60's-V.5 (FL/FR), CC-690-V.5 (C), ADP 590-V.5 (SS), MilleniaOne 2.0 (BS) - Velodyne 810 Sub, Cornered Audio (FH/RH), Definitive Technology (Front Wides). Stereo 2 Channel Only - Dali Evidence 470 & MartinLogan Forte Amplifier/Streamer with ARC.

I never really thought of it like that. But yeah, I am almost the same as you -- I use Netflix, Prime, and Youtube TV. So, I might have to try out the internals too -- it is kind of a pain swapping HDMI inputs every time I turn on the TV.

I find their settings, though perhaps more accurate, dull the colors and picture so much I wonder why people do it at. I agree it's a good base, so that way when you play with this set and find more color and motion popping settings, it will look that much better.

Display area should be set to Full Pixel.
Thank you very much for sharing that with us. It's very appreciated. I can't wait to try it. I'll be surprised that it can really enhance the picture quality that much.

Last week I hung my new 75'' x900F and love it! What a great TV. I originally bought the 65'' but sitting 10 feet away I decided to return it and buy the 75". Very happy I did. I think it has a great picture.

Keithian I agree 100% regarding rtings settings. I have applied them and they just feel dull and dark. I don't want eye bleeding contrast and colors but looking for something a little more vibrant. That said I really don't know what I am doing tweaking settings. Do you or any other forum members have some suggestions on how to start with rtings as a base and then what to change that might give those settings a little more pop and color and optimized for motion? Would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

DTVN on ATV4K is outstanding. The DTVN app is not officially supported on the 900F however it can be sideloaded to Android TV. I can't speak to which is better (internal vs ATV 4K) as I haven't received my 900F yet, but for what its worth the ATV4K app is quicker and looks better than on Nvidia Shield Android TV.

I tend to put accuracy aside and focus on pop because most folks who visit me have no idea what an EOTF curve is and could quite frankly care less. I do like vibrant colors on my Q9fn. When I set up my mothers 75" 900f set which I convinced them to buy for their budget, they felt my choice was a bit too vibrant not surprisingly so I tweaked and found a middle ground which they now love. I think I took pictures of their settings just in case they messed it up as I'm 2500 miles across the country from them, so I'll see if I can dig them up and post them on imgur for you so at least you can experiment a bit more.

Doesn't the 900f already come with the Android 8 Oreo update or are you guys expecting Android 9 Pie to come to your sets.

I was looking for a list of apps online and couldn't find a complete list. Unless I was looking in the wrong place. No matter, I will be playing with it all day on Saturday when it's delivered.

Here is what searching on "Android TV" brings up in Google Play:

Thanks, I was looking on Sony's site and somewhere else. Probably didn't search Android TV specifically. I think I was looking for Sony TV apps

Remember, AndroidTV isn't specific to Sony. Theoretically any app on the Android Play Store that is marked as AndroidTV compatible will be available for download and use, some apps need more resources than others. Most FireTV apps will work but you may not show as available if only marked for FireTV and will need to be "sideloaded".

Current system:
Sony 75X900e/Sony STR-DN-1080, CS-3/CS-8/CS5
Sony X800 4K blu-ray player/Dish Hopper3
Roku 4 Premier/Sony PS-4

Will my Denon x4300h perform better upscaling than the Sony X1 Extreme processor in this TV? Deciding which device to let upscale.

Thanks!
I would say the TV, but try them both

I'm an Apple guy so my dealings with Android is low, but I'm seeing that now. On my Sharp there are only a few apps and I never use them or cared played with them so I wasn't 100% on what to expect from the Android OS on this TV. I just assumed that some apps would be proprietary to the brand TV it's on. One of the deciding factors of me getting the TV was knowing it had Android to handle its apps figuring it would get more support and updates rather if it was a proprietary software or OS of sorts to Sony. I see this in my Infiniti where they tried to do their own infotainment system and it has 2 apps. Google and Facebook .
