2018 Sony XBR 900F owners thread (No Price Talk)

I have a question..
Do yoy use 'x-motion clarity' (BFI,clearness at 1) with bluray movies or netflix?
Do you think it's useful?

Got the 65inch version last week. All 4 corners are blacker.. I know this is normal but it is driving me crazy. Do all units do it equal?

I can absolutely see it in brighter (particularly white background) scenes if I look to the corners on my 65". But I rarely look at the corners.

I recommend this:

Enable Enhanced HDMI in options.

HDMI 1: Nvidia Shield - set to "Standard" (or Custom) mode
HDMI 2: PS4 Pro - set to "Game" picture mode
HDMI 3: UBP-X800 - set to "Custom" mode

Use "Rtings" guide to configure the modes appropriately for your use case on each one.

My 85" has darker corners too that I've been fixating on. It shouldn't be a big deal and yet...I...keep...looking. So those are normal? It's really not a huge deal but I'm not sure if my tv has issues.

Hi guys,

Could you please guide me on how to properly connect the following? I bought a few Monoprice Certified Premium High Speed HDMI cables for this setup as well.

- 65" x900F
- X9000F sound bar (I read here that this soundbar is good)
- AppleTV 4k
- U-verse box (1080i)

This setup is primarily for watching SDR (U-Verse) and Netflix/Amazon content (4k when available). And stream music from phone to soundbar.

And another question I have: do I use AppleTV or native TV application for best experience?

Thank you for your help!

Dark corners on a FALD set are 'normal'.

I only notice this on my 75" when the screen is completely white from say something like a calibration test pattern.

I'd recommend Uverse box to HDMI 1 or 4 on the TV, ATV 4K connected to the X9000F HDMI port, X9000F to HDMI 3 (for ARC). It depends on the app but you can use either the ATV or the native app. For example, Netflix is available in DV and ATMOS on either the native app or ATV. ATV will have some apps not available on the TV and vice versa. If an app is available on both, the ATV will be less prone to any possible ARC/CEC issues if you connect things as I described.

You should run the Apple 4K Tv directly to your Sony soundbar. Run your uverse directly to your tv hdmi, either port 1 or 4. Run an hdmi from your tv port 3(arc) to the output hdmi on your Sony soundbar. I have this setup in my bedroom on a 55" 900e.

Yes, and yes. I think it does improve motion with just a small reduction in brightness.

No need to separate the a/v feeds. The soundbar passes HDR10, which is all that the X800 is capable of. Just connect one HDMI from the UHD player to soundbar.

Ok cool but this is assuming I have it set up with arc right? Cause right now I’m using optical cable. Is that how I should connect it?

Nothing wrong with getting a refurb, I would probably buy an extended warranty. I am guessing you are a quantity kind a guy compared to a quality kind a guy?

Correct, this is assuming that you have an HDMI ARC connection. If you don't want to do that for any reason, you could split the HDMI as you originally suggested.

FYI, HDMI audio out via ARC provides slightly better audio than optical. Even for a stereo soundbar like yours. On the other hand,it can cause ARC CEC issues. I would try ARC if I were you. You can always switch to optical if you have problems.

Just to chime in, darker corners are a known thing for Sony televisions. Other brands seem to get the shadowy jail bars, Sony gets darker corners. I think Sony’s uniformity is really the lesser of two evils.

I just wish that I wasn’t having such terrible luck with televisions. I tried two Z9F’s. First one had pretty noticeable light bleed along the entire right hand side. Second had light leakage from separation at the bottom. So, I decided to say the heck with it and get a 900F. Had a permanent infinity symbol shadow on the screen so had to get that replaced. The 900F currently in my house has a permanent spot where too much light is coming through, and there’s shadowing on the bottom that looks like the panel isn’t quite pressed flat along it.

And now I’m dealing with the whole ‘I wonder if the store is going to do another exchange for me or tell me to go screw myself’ and ‘I wonder if Sony will be Sony and just tell me the pictures I sent them look normal even though they clearly aren’t’ rigmarole. I’m genuinely scared at this point I’m going to be stuck with a television I’m never going to be happy with.

Trust me… if the slightly darker corners are bothering you, just think of me and my situation and count your blessings.

Thanks guys for the input on the dark corners. I will live with them. They are not too bad until you really look for them.

Another question though... I am running all my inputs through my receiver. I am a little confused on the "game mode". Do I enable game mode on the TV.. but since only 1 HDMI goes from the receiver to the TV won't all sources use game mode then?

Not sure what you mean. While I acknowledge the OLED has the superior picture, the opportunity for a larger screen at my distance has always been on my mind. That being said I won't consider any other LED other than the 900f because of the quality. I could buy the Samsung NU8000 for a heck of a lot less but the poor local dimming and other features that don't stack up make me come back to the 75 inch 900f.

Calibration settings

Thus far I have seen a very few calibration settings for this TV.

I understand each TV is slightly different and needs to be calibrated individually, however these TV's are know for the color uniformity out of the box with a few adjustments. I have looked at RTINGS, including many you tube videos from Quantum etc. however I question some of those settings.

My set up is basically a Sony X700 Blu Ray, Sony 65" 900F, Marantz Sr 7012 for AVR passthrough. I am mostly interested in Movies in 4K and Dolby Vision.

Question:
Anyone else like to share what Sony TV calibration settings work for you and why. Looking for mainly usage of movies. MotionFlow On/Off etc? My kids will also play games on this TV but mainly for movies. Appreciate it.

2018 Sony XBR 900F owners thread (No Price Talk)

I'm trying to understand if this tv has duplications in image with BFI active even with app Netflix or ps4/xbox app.
It should have duplications with 60 hz content (because the tv flicker at 120 hz with BFI active instead of flicker at 60 hz),and netflix app on android tv and ps4 or xbox Netflix app outputs at 60 hz..
Netflix app on Apple Tv Output at 24 hz so maybe i could be better for a good BFI with this tv.
I really don't undestand why this tv doesn't flicker at 60 hz with BFI active on 60 hz content..like other tv (Samsung Q6-Q9 for example,or OLED LG..or OLED sony..)

It's a shame you cant get top quality at smaller sizes these days.

What do you think about image in motion with this tv?
I have read in websites some people that are not very happy with this tv.
They see something "strange" about motion with this tv,like a sort of motion blur or ghosting.
Me too the first time i see the tv in action have noticed something of "strange".
They compare the tv with old tvs fullhd they had.
In your opinions,is this tv ok in motion images with games and movies?even without motionflow or BFI options?

Maybe is because is a 4K very bright TV that people see "something strange" compare to old 1080p tvs?
